Chapter 9 of 10
Geese in the Gala
1.3k words
“Your security is dreadful, darling; now, shall we ruin a gala?”
Vendra stared at the woman who had, for weeks, played the harmless village eccentric. Yenni’s words, sharp as cut crystal, hung in the air, replacing the lingering scent of damp alleyways with the metallic tang of imminent chaos. Jorik, still half-shielding Vendra, lowered his stance slightly, his gaze fixed on Yenni, a silent question in his eyes. He clearly knew of her, or at least of her family’s true status.
“Ruin a gala?” Vendra echoed, her voice a reedy whisper. The satellite phone felt heavy, a tangible link to a world she’d almost forgotten. “What… how?”
Yenni smiled, a predatory curve of her lips that had never once graced the ‘senile elder’ persona. “My family controls the distribution of our water town's famous ‘Crimson Silk’ textiles. Your gala features my great-grandniece’s debut collection tonight. Getting past Lisse's checkpoints was child’s play. As for the ‘how’… an elder of my standing keeps a few unconventional doors unlocked. And I enjoy watching balance restored.” Her eyes flickered to Jorik, a knowing spark passing between them.
“The hard drive,” Jorik interjected, pulling the small, encrypted device from his pocket. “The deepfakes, the planned board vote. We need to expose her before the official presentation.”
“Precisely,” Yenni purred, extending a hand to Vendra. Her touch was firm, cold. “My associates are already inside, awaiting my signal. You, my dear, are the star of the show. And Jorik,” she glanced at him, a hint of something unreadable in her gaze, “you’re her very dashing co-conspirator. Now, let’s make an entrance that will truly be remembered.”

The Grand Kyris Ballast Hall pulsed with a frenetic energy, the air thick with the scent of imported white lilies and the low thrum of a thousand hushed conversations. Nova Kyris’s elite, bedecked in bespoke finery, glided across floors of polished obsidian, flutes of sparkling helix-wine in hand. Across a fifty-foot digital canvas, the illuminated emblem of Vendra’s own ‘Challis Luxure’ empire dissolved into the sleek, aggressive branding Lisse had crafted: ‘Torval Apex.’
Lisse Torval, radiant in a gown of shimmering electrum, stood at the podium, a dazzling smile plastered across her face. Her voice, amplified across the cavernous hall, was syrupy sweet. “Distinguished guests, esteemed directors, tonight marks a new dawn for Challis Luxure. A transformation, guided by renewed vision and unwavering strength.” She paused, allowing the applause to wash over her. “It is with great pleasure that I now present the new articles of incorporation, solidifying this leadership transition, for your immediate ratification.”
Just as Lisse gestured to an aide, preparing to display the fraudulent documents, a piercing honk echoed from the main entrance of the reception hall. Heads turned. Another, louder honk. Then a cacophony erupted – a furious symphony of squawking, flapping, and panicked shrieks. A flurry of white and grey feathers erupted into the glittering crowd.
A flock of geese, at least two dozen strong, stormed into the ballroom. Not the placid birds of a manicured park, but the notoriously territorial canal waterfowl of the waterways, long necks arched and beaks snapping as webbed feet clattered against polished stone. They hissed, wings beating against crystal chandeliers, chasing terrified socialites and sending flutes of helix-wine flying. A woman in a shimmering gown shrieked, her perfectly coiffed hair dislodged as a particularly irate gander nipped at her ankle. A patrol guard attempting to wrangle one tumbled backward as the bird beat its wings against his uniform. Utter pandemonium.
“The geese!” someone screamed, pointing a trembling hand. “They’re from Yulari! Matriarch Yenni’s flock!”
Amidst the chaos, Vendra moved. Adrenaline sharpened the edges of her vision. This was it. This was the moment she had been building towards, not with spreadsheets or schedules, but with raw, unbridled fury. She saw Lisse, momentarily frozen at the podium, her perfect smile faltering, her eyes darting between the chaos and the looming projection screen. This was her chance. She locked eyes with Jorik, who gave a sharp, almost imperceptible nod, already moving towards the back of the massive projector unit.
Vendra launched herself forward, a sleek missile aimed directly at Lisse. The crowd was a blur of fleeing bodies and frantic screams. The floor detail, overwhelmed by the avian assault, barely registered her sprint. Lisse reached for the fallen mic, her tone shrill. “Bouncers! Clear these animals!”
Before Lisse could finish, Vendra was there. She didn’t hesitate. With the practiced precision of someone who once disarmed a competitor with a well-placed stiletto heel, Vendra plunged her shoulder into Lisse’s midsection. The impact was solid, driving the air from Lisse’s lungs. The PR manager stumbled, losing her footing on the slick stage, her carefully styled hair flying as she went down, her microphone clattering away.
“What are you doing?!” Lisse shrieked, scrambling to regain her footing, her face contorted with shock and fury. “You’re insane!”
“The only one insane here is the woman who thought she could steal an empire with a smile and a deepfake,” Vendra spat back, her voice low and cutting, audible only to Lisse over the din of the geese. She held Lisse down, pinning her arms against the polished stage floor, the expensive fabric of their gowns rustling with the struggle.
At the same instant, Jorik, moving with a speed that belied his chaotic persona, reached the large, black mainframe unit behind the projection screen. He tore open a service panel, revealing a tangle of wires and ports. His hands, usually so steady with a lens, worked with focused intensity. He located the primary feed, a thick optical fiber link feeding the main canvas. With a quick, decisive movement, he unplugged it, then, pulling the small, decrypted hard drive from his pocket, he swiftly plugged in a custom-fabricated data cable, linking the drive directly to the broadcast trunk. A single, triumphant click.
Across the massive panel, the ‘Torval Apex’ insignia died, replaced by glaring white glare. Then, text began to scroll, fast and relentless. Email after email. Screenshot after screenshot. Dates, times, names. Messages from Lisse Torval outlining the entire smear campaign. ‘*…the live TV confession will crush her…*’ ‘*…the board is easily swayed with the right leverage…*’ ‘*…the brand’s resurgence will make us untouchable…*’ ‘*…Vendra’s emotional fragility is our greatest asset…*’ ‘*…once her assets are frozen, the vote is a formality…*’
The hall fell quiet as the trustees, faces blanching, read the damning paper trail. The records unfurled across the wall, a catalog of manufactured scandal. A low murmur rippled through the crowd, growing into a shocked gasp.
Lisse, momentarily stunned by the public exposure, found a burst of strength. She twisted, her eyes wide with a desperate, animalistic rage. She saw Jorik, his hand still on the mainframe, and the scrolling evidence. With a guttural cry, she wrenched herself free from Vendra’s grip, her eyes scanning the stage. Her gaze snapped to an emergency locker beside the podium, housing a heavy red service axe. Without a word, she lunged.
Before Vendra could react, Lisse had shattered the glass of the emergency box. She yanked the axe free, its blade gleaming ominously. She didn’t aim for Vendra, or Jorik. Instead, with a wild scream, she swung the axe with brutal force, embedding the sharp blade deep into the projector’s power conduit. Sparks sprayed, a whine shrieked through the wiring, and the display cut to black. The incriminating emails vanished, replaced by utter darkness.
Lisse stood panting, the axe still clutched in her hands, her hair disheveled, her expensive gown torn. Her gaze whipped toward the silent executives, then back to Vendra. “She’s hallucinating!” Lisse shrieked, her voice echoing in the sudden silence, desperation making her voice shrill. “This is a breakdown! A pathetic, desperate attempt to avoid accountability! Trustees! Vote now! Vote to terminate Vendra Challis immediately, or you’re all complicit in her madness!”
