Chapter 5 of 10
A Change in the Projections

“Omni-Corp Media,” Vendra whispered, the words tasting like industrial solvent. “You work for Omni-Corp Media.”
Jorik, who had returned with two skewered river-eel – one still twitching faintly – froze mid-chew. The smoky scent of the eel, previously appealing, now seemed to curdle in the cool night air. The lantern swinging from the low ceiling of the canal boat cast his face in deep shadows, hiding the flicker in his eyes. He swallowed, the movement sharp in his throat.
“I *did*,” he corrected, his voice surprisingly soft. He looked at the platinum card in her hand, then back at her face, a complex expression passing over his features – something like weary resignation, tinged with a flicker of defiance.
Vendra felt her pulse drum in her temples like a chaotic rhythm. “Did? Like in past tense? The card is still active, Jorik. It says ‘Senior Creative Lead.’ Not ‘Former Freelancer Who Happens to Carry Conglomerate Propaganda in His Fanny Pack’.” She brandished the card like a weapon. “Lisse. This is Lisse, isn’t it? She sent you. An ‘exclusive peek’ behind the curtain of my meticulously timetabled breakdown. A ‘human interest’ piece for the tabloids. My fall from grace, documented by the runaway heir of the very empire profiting from it.”
The canal boat, a small, enclosed space, suddenly felt suffocatingly tight. The rhythmic lapping of water against the hull, normally soothing, now sounded like a mocking countdown. Jorik didn't flinch, didn't argue. He simply watched her, his gaze unnervingly steady.
“You really think that?” he asked, his voice devoid of his usual playful lilt, a raw edge to it she hadn't heard before. “That I’m here to document your misery for a clickbait banner?”
“What else am I supposed to think?” Vendra retorted, her voice rising, cutting through the stillness. “My ex sends a cryptic text implicating Lisse, you appear from the depths of the canal, precisely timed to interrupt my weeping window. You stage a public kiss to ‘sabotage’ Lisse’s spin – a storyline that coincidentally generates more buzz for *Omni-Corp Media*. Then you lead me to a ‘no monitors’ sanctuary while carrying an ID badge for a company that thrives on invading privacy. It’s a beautifully orchestrated smear campaign, Jorik. Even I have to admit, the execution is… almost flawless.”
Jorik pushed the skewered eel away, a grim line to his lips. He ran a hand through his perpetually disheveled hair. “Flawless? Vendra, I threw your luggage into the canal. I got you arrested by a cabbage enthusiast. I literally ruined your itinerary within minutes of meeting you. If this is Lisse’s ‘flawless’ plan, she needs to fire her strategist.” He paused, his gaze dropping to the rippling water outside the boat’s small window. “Omni-Corp Media isn’t just ‘my family’s toxic empire’ in some abstract sense. It *is* toxic. It poisoned my childhood, my relationships, every single artistic impulse I ever had. They wanted me to be a suit, a number-cruncher, a sensationalist hack. I walked away from all of it, Vendra. The money, the power, the… the pretense of it all.”
He met her eyes again, his own a deep, unwavering blue. “I came to Yulari to disappear. To shoot things that weren’t people’s worst moments, to live somewhere the network signal couldn’t reach. That card…” He gestured vaguely at the platinum rectangle in her hand. “It’s a reminder. A trophy, maybe. Of what I left behind. Or, more accurately, what I ran from.”
Vendra stared at him, her logical circuits shorting. The theory she’d constructed, so neat, so exquisitely symmetrical in its deceit, was fraying at the edges. Jorik Fane, the scion of Omni-Corp, abandoning his inheritance for… canal cabbages and a simple existence? It felt like a plot twist from a badly written novella. And yet, the earnestness in his eyes, the almost painful sincerity, was a data point she couldn’t ignore.
He reached out, slowly, his fingers brushing hers as he gently took the ID card. His touch was warm, surprisingly grounding. Vendra didn’t pull away. He held the card for a moment, turning it over in his fingers, the platinum glinting under the lantern light. Then, with a casual, almost dismissive flick of his wrist, he tossed it. It spun once, twice, a silver blur, before disappearing with a tiny *plink* into the murky depths of the canal.
The silence that followed was profound, broken only by the continued lapping of water. Vendra’s mouth was slightly agape. A priceless executive artifact, proof of his lineage, a potential bargaining chip, gone. Just like that. Her internal ledgers, previously so organized, now contained a massive, unquantifiable variable.
“What… why did you do that?” she finally managed, the question more a statement of disbelief.
Jorik shrugged, a faint, almost shy smile touching his lips. “Proof of concept. Now, how about we find a public maritime console? I have a feeling your PR manager’s ‘sympathy tour’ might have taken a turn towards ‘hostile takeover’.”
The thought struck Vendra like cold iron. He was right. Lisse’s grand arrival, the paparazzi swarm, the sudden shift in coverage… it all pointed to something far more sinister than a simple tabloid scoop. Her planned revenge, focused on her ex, suddenly seemed trivial in the face of a potential executive coup.
They navigated the labyrinthine canals, Jorik expertly poling their small boat through the moonlit waterways. The floating market, once a vibrant hub, was now quiet, most vendors having retreated to their berths. They eventually docked near a communal service vessel, larger and more stable, designated for communal activities. On its main deck, a single, glowing station stood. Its monitor, displaying weather patterns and shipping manifests at dusk, now pulsed with a frantic, angry red light.
Vendra walked over, her boots thudding against the damp deck planks. Jorik followed, his hand resting lightly on the small of her back. The touch was firm, a silent support. She ignored it, her gaze locked on the display. The station, powered by a low-grade geothermal generator, was clunky, slow to respond, but it connected to the greater Nova Kyris data streams, albeit with a significant delay.
She accessed a public news aggregator, bypassing the local Yulari interface. The front-page banners assaulted her, a barrage of digital shrapnel. A newly launched campaign, emblazoned with a garish, stylized logo: ‘Challis Unhinged: The True Cost of Genius.’ Her face, distorted and unflattering, stared back at her from a dozen different angles. Articles, press releases, fabricated testimonials – all painting her as an unstable, tyrannical mogul, prone to irrational outbursts and unsound business decisions. A particularly heinous piece quoted anonymous ‘former employees’ alleging bizarre instances of Vendra attempting to optimize their sleep patterns and ‘ledger their friendships.’
Lisse’s face, smirkingly serene, appeared on a subsidiary window, announcing a ‘temporary, compassionate takeover of Challis Industries to safeguard shareholder interests during Vendra’s ongoing mental health crisis.’
Vendra felt a cold, calculated fury ignite within her. Her heart didn’t hammer; it compressed, like a diamond forming under immense pressure. Her goal, once simple revenge against her ex, had calcified into something far more urgent: survival. Lisse wasn’t just trying to profit from her heartbreak; she was attempting a hostile takeover, a complete dissolution of Vendra’s empire.
“She won’t get away with this,” Vendra stated, her voice flat, devoid of its earlier heat, but with an underlying steel that resonated with absolute certainty. “This is… an act of executive sabotage.”
Jorik leaned over her shoulder, his proximity a warm presence. “We need to get you back to Nova Kyris. Now. I know a guy with a private heli-port not far from here. It’ll be expensive, but…”
He trailed off. The monitor, which had been displaying Lisse’s carefully crafted lies, suddenly flashed. A stark, bold red warning, superimposed over the text, pulsed with alarming urgency.
