Chapter 1: Abrupt Arrival, Baffling Blessing
843 words
Sprinting, Shaq Pao felt the familiar burn in his massive quads. Sweat beaded on his brow, blurring his vision, but his smile stretched wide. The worn basketball court, the shouts of his friends, the thud of the ball – this was his happy place. He was big, yes, a mountain of a man, but on the court, he was nimble, a gentle giant finding grace in motion. He loved the game.
Joy surged through his chest as he took off, leaping for a rebound. His fingers brushed the rim, the ball a mere inch from his grasp. Time seemed to slow, the arc of the ball perfect.
Suddenly, the world tore.
Air vanished. Sound dissolved into a high-pitched whine that vibrated through his very bones. A blinding flash of white light consumed everything. His stomach lurched, a sickening twist that stole his breath.
He slammed down.
Asphalt bit into his palms, scraping skin. The impact rattled his teeth. He lay there, disoriented, a groan rumbling from his chest. His head throbbed, a dull ache behind his eyes.
A cacophony of sound assaulted him. Horns blared, unlike anything he’d ever heard – a melodic, almost ethereal tone. Voices chattered, a language he didn't recognize, yet somehow, the urgency of it was clear.
Towering chrome structures pierced an iridescent sky, glowing with an inner light that pulsed in rhythm. Sleek, impossible vehicles zipped through the air above, leaving shimmering trails. People, dressed in flowing robes and sharp, futuristic suits, glided past with an unnerving grace. Some had faint auras, like whispers of light around their bodies.
Everywhere, an invisible hum. A vibrant energy permeated the very air, thick and sweet, like ozone after a thunderstorm, yet infinitely more profound. It vibrated against his skin, a constant, subtle pressure.
His skin tingled. The energy felt alive, almost sentient. It beckoned, promising power, knowledge, something fundamental.
Instinctively, Shaq reached out, trying to draw it in, to absorb it, as he might absorb the warmth of the sun or the chill of the wind. He’d always been sensitive to his surroundings, a keen awareness of the world around him.
Nothing. An empty chasm.
He tried again, focusing, urging the abundant energy to flow into him. He felt it brush against his spiritual perception, a vast ocean, but his own being was a sealed vessel. It simply slid past, mocking his efforts.
An empty chasm yawned where his connection to this fundamental force should be. His spiritual gates, whatever they were, were locked, impenetrable.
A cold dread began to seep into his bones, chilling him more effectively than any winter wind. It wasn't just confusion anymore. It was a sickening, familiar sensation.
Not again. The memory of powerlessness, of being unable to protect, flared in his mind, sharp and brutal.
His breath hitched. That gnawing fear, buried deep since childhood, clawed its way to the surface. He was adrift, helpless, in a place utterly alien. His massive size, his strength, meant nothing here if he couldn't grasp this spiritual essence.
He pushed himself up, his muscles screaming from the fall, but the pain was a dull buzz compared to the terror coiling in his gut. His eyes scanned the fantastical street, searching for anything familiar, any anchor.
Panic clawed at his throat. He was a giant, yes, but a giant without a purpose, without a place, in a world that seemed to run on this very energy he couldn't touch. His heart pounded a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
Where was he? What kind of cosmic joke was this? One moment, chasing a basketball, the next, dumped into a sci-fi fantasy novel. This wasn't right. Nothing about this was right.
Shaq took a shaky step. His knees threatened to buckle. The sheer scale of the buildings, the casual display of what could only be magic – or cultivation, as his gut screamed – was overwhelming. He saw a child, no older than ten, levitating a small, glowing orb in their hand, laughing as it chased a pet that resembled a miniature dragon.
People continued to flow past him, most ignoring his sudden, disheveled appearance. A few glanced, their eyes widening slightly at his sheer size, but quickly dismissed him. He was a curiosity, nothing more, an uncultivated brute in a world of spiritual refinement.
His core wound, the deep-seated fear of powerlessness, throbbed. He remembered the countless times he’d wanted to help, to intervene, only to be held back by his own limitations. Now, surrounded by such raw, untamed power, he felt it again, amplified a thousandfold. He was a fish out of water, a landlocked behemoth in an ocean of cultivators.
Shaking his head, Shaq tried to clear the fog. He needed to find answers. He needed to understand. He began to walk, a lumbering figure amidst the graceful, energy-infused populace. Each step felt heavy, each breath a struggle against the rising panic.
He saw glowing storefronts displaying arcane artifacts alongside advanced electronics. Cultivators zoomed past on levitating skateboards, their robes fluttering. A giant holographic advertisement for a
