Chapter 8 of 10
Coward's Gambit
920 words
The Chasm-Weaver, an abyssal terror of woven night and piercing stars, descended, casting an impossible cold over the Mirqab oasis. Its colossal form blotted out the fractured sky, and a suffocating pressure bore down, stealing the air from lungs, freezing motion in its tracks. Guild Master Al-Hamal, renowned for his iron will, stood rigid, his hand frozen mid-air, a half-drawn Star-Glass blade glinting uselessly. The other commanders, their faces pale beneath their desert tans, were similarly petrified, their formidable auras choked silent by the entity’s sheer presence.
Only Rafi moved. Blood surged hot against his temples. The Loom of Fates flared crimson on his wrist, its glowing threads spinning a frantic, silent warning. The hourglass held fewer than three hours of sand.
He didn't hesitate. With a guttural roar that ripped through the oppressive silence, Rafi launched himself forward. His twin Duskblades, unearthed from the shattered labyrinth, hummed with a hungry, violet energy, carving streaks through the shimmering air. He was no longer the unassuming merchant, nor the polite scout. This was the Stalker, fully unveiled, charging an apocalypse alone.
Lord Veridian’s immense, multi-jointed arm, fashioned from jagged starlight and coalesced void, swept down. The air shrieked, displaced by its impossible speed. Rafi met the blow with a surge of raw power, his blades glowing, and a shockwave erupted, tearing at the flagstones. He was thrown back, skidding across the ground, but he landed on his feet, snarling, already preparing his next assault.
Masonry shrieked along the perimeter. A section of the oasis wall, cracked by the Chasm-Weaver’s descent, buckled outward. A massive slab of stone, heavy enough to crush a war elephant, detached and began to plummet. Its trajectory was horrifyingly clear: it was falling directly towards Jalil Bakhsh.
Jalil, still paralyzed by terror, still soaked from his humiliation, could only whimper as the shadow of the falling debris enveloped him. For a fraction of a heartbeat, Rafi hesitated. The apocalyptic threat loomed, demanding his full, undivided attention. But the merchant who had watched Soraya die powerless, the man who had promised to protect everyone, could not let another soul perish if he could prevent it.
With a burst of speed that blurred his form, Rafi abandoned his charge against the sovereign entity. He covered the distance to Jalil in a single bound, a blur of motion. He didn't speak, didn't even look at the other man. With a powerful shove, he sent Jalil sprawling clear of the collapsing wall. The slab crashed down where Jalil had been seconds before, pulverizing the ground.

Rafi turned, Duskblades flashing, ready to re-engage the celestial beast. But as he spun, a glint of metal caught his eye, low and fast. Jalil, scrambling to his feet, his face contorted into a mask of pathetic fury and desperate avarice, lunged. A cheap, Star-Glass ceremonial dagger, plucked from a fallen guard’s belt, was clutched in his trembling hand. He aimed for Rafi’s back, between the shoulder blades, a sneering whisper escaping his lips: “This kill... is mine!”
The dagger struck. But instead of piercing flesh, it merely scraped against a sudden, shimmering aura of woven star-shadows that blossomed around Rafi. The impact was negligible, a mere tickle against the veteran’s honed defenses. Jalil’s cheap blade, unable to penetrate the protective energy, shattered into a thousand glittering shards. The Chosen One stood there, arm still outstretched, the shattered hilt dangling from his fingers, mouth slackened in bewildered disbelief at his utter failure.
“You… fool!” Soraya’s voice, usually a melody of warmth, cracked like lightning across the battleground. She had watched, eyes blazing, as Rafi pushed Jalil to safety. She had seen the treacherous lunge. A torrent of elemental fire, born of incandescent fury, erupted from her outstretched hand. It wasn’t a controlled spell, but a raw, uncontrolled blast of pure, white-hot rage. It slammed into Jalil, lifting him clean off his feet. He shrieked, a high-pitched, pathetic sound, as the inferno propelled him across the flagstones, embedding him with a sickening thud into the stone facade of the Conservatoire’s main hall. His body left a smoking, indelible silhouette.
Soraya stood, ribs heaving, her stare blazing with protective heat. She looked at Rafi, then at the smoking indent where Jalil lay, exposed, battered, and utterly fraudulent. “No one… touches *my* Rafi,” she declared, her voice ringing with fierce, unwavering conviction.
The Chasm-Weaver, indifferent to mortal squabbles, whipped forward a tendril of interwoven void. It wasn’t fast, but possessed an inevitability that Rafi, still reeling from the double betrayal and Soraya’s explosive defense, couldn’t entirely evade. The entity’s sheer mass collided with him, a crushing, formless impact that pitched him through the air like discarded rag. His Duskblades flew from his grip, clattering uselessly against the flagstones.
He hit the ground hard, pain lancing through his ribs, vision clouding. When the haze parted, air locked in his throat. The horror had bypassed him entirely. Its massive talons, jagged and sharp like fractured stars, had clamped around Soraya. She struggled, a small, defiant figure caught in the sovereign titan's grasp, her elemental energy flaring uselessly against its impervious hide.
The Loom of Fates, on Rafi’s wrist, pulsed with a violent, urgent light. New threads, thicker and darker than any he had seen before, laced through the glowing grid, forming stark, radiant glyphs. The hourglass on his forearm flickered, its sands almost gone.
