Chapter 3 of 10
The Glass-Shell Terror
1.2k words
“Dungeon rift collapse! Sector Gamma! First-year initiates trapped!”
The enchanted voice blared again, slicing through the frantic clamor of the bells. Rafi’s grip tightened on the cursed dagger, its cold presence a stark contrast to the sudden heat in his chest. Soraya. She would be among the first responders, a master elementalist, but also a target. His eyes darted to the main courtyard, where a shimmering portal, usually dormant, flared with an angry violet light, radiating unstable geomantic heat.
Novices spilled from every dormitory, clamoring in disarray. Instructor Zahir, a formidable warrior with scars etched like desert winds across his sun-darkened face, bellowed orders. “All combat bands, assemble! Guild Masters, assign rescue teams! The young recruits take priority!”
Jalil, predictably, shoved his way to the front, his polished armor gleaming under the Star-Glass lamps. His band, a collection of burly, self-important warriors, puffed out their chests. “Chosen One Jalil’s band is ready, Instructor Zahir! We’ll lead the charge!” he declared, his voice booming with false confidence.
Rafi’s gaze found Soraya, already near Zahir, her expression a mask of focused intensity. She caught his eye, a quick, reassuring nod passing between them. He nodded back, setting his weight low.
Zahir’s eyes scanned the crowd, landing on Soraya. “Fadel, Nassar, your new band will enter alongside Jalil’s. First wave. Find the cornered novices. Secure them. Retreat if overwhelmed.” He looked at Rafi, his gaze sharp. “Nassar, you’re a scout. Stay low. Support Fadel. Don’t get in the way.”
Rafi dipped his head, playing the subservient novice. “Understood, Instructor.” A faint rustle against his ankle confirmed Qamar’s presence, the fennec already anticipating the dark.
“See, Nassar?” Jalil sneered, clapping Rafi on the shoulder, a condescending gesture. “You stick with us. Maybe you’ll learn something. Don’t trip over your own feet in there.” His bandmates snickered.
Rafi simply offered a weak smile, keeping his shoulders hunched. *They have no idea,* he thought, a flicker of the Eclipse Stalker’s ruthless efficiency stirring within him.
The rift churned, a maw of swirling sand and gloom. Jalil, always eager for the spotlight, was the first to plunge in, his band following close behind. Soraya gave Rafi a brief, worried glance before stepping in, her Star-Glass staff humming with latent energy. Rafi followed, Qamar a barely perceptible ripple beneath his heel.
The air inside the rift was thick with dust and the metallic tang of destabilized magic. It was a labyrinth of shifting sandstone walls, groaning under an unseen pressure. Star-Glass lanterns, embedded haphazardly in the rock, cast flickering silhouettes against the stone. The path sloped sharply downwards, leading into the familiar chill of the subterranean.
“Split up!” Jalil commanded, his voice echoing in the confined space, already sounding less confident than outside. “My band will take the main tunnel. Nassar, Fadel, check those side passages for pinned recruits. Don’t wander off.” It was a thinly veiled attempt to push them into more dangerous, unmapped territory.
“As you command, Chosen One,” Rafi said, his tone deliberately meek. He and Soraya veered into a narrower passage, the sand softer underfoot. The sounds of distant cries, muffled and terrified, reached them.
“Rafi, be careful,” Soraya murmured, her hand briefly brushing his arm. “This isn’t like the training rifts. The Abyssal influence feels… stronger.”
“I know,” Rafi replied, keeping his voice light, belying the vigilance that gripped him. He stepped light on the balls of his feet, shedding his clumsy posture. His eyes tracked every crevice and shifting grain of sand. Qamar darted through the gloom ahead, ears twitching, sniffing out danger.
A sudden, piercing scream ripped through the air, followed by a sickening crunch. It came from Jalil’s direction. Rafi and Soraya exchanged a look and sprinted towards the sound. The passage opened into a larger cavern, its ceiling crisscrossed with shimmering veins of Star-Glass.
And there it was. Towering over the cornered recruits was an obsidian horror: a **Glass-Shell Carapace**, its segmented body covered in razor-sharp obsidian plates that reflected the Star-Glass light like shattered mirrors. Its multiple chitinous legs scraped against the rock, and its maw, lined with crystalline fangs, dripped with corrosive ichor. It had just crushed a support pillar, pinning several scholars beneath the rubble.
Jalil’s band was frozen, their weapons half-raised. A boy stumbled in panic, directly into the path of the behemoth's sweeping leg. Jalil yelled, “Watch out!” and, lunging forward, shoved the boy directly into the beast's arc while scrambling backward himself. The boy shrieked, sprawling across the gravel just as the heavy limb smashed down, missing his torso but pinning his ankle beneath a shattered boulder.
Rafi stopped breathing. His knuckles grazed the curved hilt.
“Soraya, distracting blast! Draw its attention!” Rafi hissed, slipping into the darkness along the cavern wall. He knew the beast's blind spot—directly behind its segmented crest, where the plates met the neck.
Soraya didn’t question him. Her staff flared, and a focused orb of molten fire, a **Cinder Shot**, slammed into the monster’s armored flank. The beast roared, the sound like grinding glass, its attention snapping to Soraya. Its head swung, momentarily exposing the vulnerable joint.
[QAMAR, NOW!] Rafi willed. From his silhouette, the tiny fennec darted out, a blur across the stone. It vanished, reappearing directly behind the monster's crest with the cursed dagger between its jaws, dropping the weapon into Rafi's waiting grip before melting away.
The obsidian blade ached with frost. The monstrosity was still turning toward Soraya. Rafi surged off the rock face, cutting inward with a hunter's precision. The dagger sliced through the exposed joint behind the collar plates without meeting resistance.
At that exact second, Soraya unleashed another burst of flame, a **Blaze Nova**, straight into the creature's dislodged crest. The beast’s gargantuan body shuddered, a terrible, drawn-out groan ripping from its throat as its head, cleanly severed, toppled from its shoulders with a wet thud, rolling to a stop amidst the dust. Its vast, segmented shell remained standing for a moment, then crashed to the ground, kicking up a cloud of debris.
Silence descended, broken only by the ragged wheezing of the survivors and the murmurs of Jalil’s band. Rafi stepped back into the gloom, wiped the blade clean on his hem, and slid it into the inner sheath. He then stumbled out, looking appropriately disoriented and terrified.
“By the Loom… Soraya, that was… incredible!” Rafi exclaimed, his voice shaking with feigned awe. “Your fire… it cut right through it!” He rushed to help the pinned student, his movements clumsy but effective, carefully lifting the rock off the boy’s leg.
Soraya lowered her staff, studying the fallen carcass, then turned to Rafi. Her spell had connected, certainly, but the sheer force needed to decapitate such a creature… She watched Rafi expertly, if awkwardly, tend to the boy, her gaze lingering on his strong, capable hands. The spark of suspicion from the kitchens reignited, a tiny, glowing ember in her mind.
Jalil, regaining his composure, strode forward, puffing out his chest. “Excellent work, Fadel! My distraction worked perfectly. And you, Nassar, you finally did something useful, cleaning up after the *real* combatants.” He kicked a fragment of cracked plate, trying to look heroic.
Rafi just nodded, a humble scout. The survivors were pulled from the rubble. The danger was contained. On his wrist, the Loom of Fates sparked crimson, threads knotting into urgent glyphs.
