Chapter 50: The Forger's Choice

978 words

"Pathetic," Valerius sneered, his gaze sweeping over them. "Your end is imminent, Anya." Cold dread seeped into Anya's bones, a familiar, unwelcome guest. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat. His hand, Alistair's, found hers, his thumb stroking her knuckles. A silent anchor in the rising storm. Valerius chuckled, a dry, rustling sound. "Did you really think I wouldn't have contingencies?" His eyes, sharp and predatory, fixed on Anya. "Your little performance, your grand reveal... it's all rather quaint." "Tell me, Anya," he purred, stepping closer. "How are your parents enjoying their quiet little retirement?" Anya's heart hammered. A cold shock coursed through her veins. "And that struggling gallery your sister just opened? A charming venture." Her blood ran cold. He knew. He knew everything. Alistair tensed beside her, his grip tightening. His eyes narrowed, a silent warning. "Don't worry," Valerius continued, a cruel smile twisting his lips. "They're perfectly safe. For now." He paused, letting the words hang heavy in the air, a poisonous gas filling the sterile gallery. "Their continued well-being, however, depends entirely on you." Anya stared, unable to form words. Her mind raced, a frantic hamster on a wheel. "You have a choice, my dear forger," Valerius stated, his voice now flat, devoid of its earlier taunt. "A very simple choice, actually." "Betray Alistair Vance, expose his little scheme, and your family lives a long, prosperous life." Alistair's head snapped towards Valerius, then to Anya. A flicker of realization, a dawning horror in his eyes. "Or protect him," Valerius finished, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, "and watch as everything you hold dear crumbles. Your parents' pensions vanish. Your sister's gallery closes. Their reputations, their lives... shattered." He made a sweeping gesture, encompassing the empty room, the world beyond. "You understand, don't you?" A sickening wave of nausea washed over Anya. Her knees felt weak. This was it. The nightmare made real. The true cost of her involvement. How could she choose? How could she condemn Alistair, the man who had stood by her, protected her, believed in her? But her family. Her parents, who had sacrificed everything for her. Her sister, whose dreams were just taking flight. Sweat beaded on her forehead, tracing a cold path down her temple. "Don't listen to him, Anya," Alistair's voice was low, urgent. "It's a lie. He's bluffing." Valerius laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Is he, now? Perhaps a quick phone call would convince her." He pulled out his phone, his finger hovering over the screen. Anya's breath caught. She knew Valerius didn't bluff when it came to leverage like this. He was a monster, but a precise one. His threats were always backed by brutal capability. Her fingers twitched, her gaze darting between Alistair's worried face and Valerius's smug smirk. Unseen by Valerius, the hidden switch was tucked beneath the faux-marble pedestal where the fake painting was supposed to go. One touch could trigger the alarm, bring in security, expose Valerius's illicit dealings. Another could disable the entire system, allowing Valerius to escape, taking his secrets and his power with him, perhaps even turning the tables on Alistair. The choice was stark, agonizing. Alistair's grip on her hand tightened, a silent plea, a desperate hope. He had built this trap with her. He had trusted her implicitly. Now, that trust was a weight, crushing her. Her family's faces flashed before her eyes: her mother's gentle smile, her father's knowing wink, her sister's infectious laugh. Could she sacrifice them for a man she'd known for mere months, no matter how deeply she felt for him? Could she sacrifice Alistair, the man who had given her a chance at redemption, at a new life? Her vision blurred, the sterile gallery walls seeming to press in on her. Valerius watched her, his expression unreadable, a puppet master awaiting his player's move. "Time is running out, Anya," he said, his voice soft, almost sympathetic, a viper's lullaby. "Choose wisely. Your entire world hangs in the balance." Alistair stepped forward slightly, positioning himself almost protectively in front of Anya. "You won't get away with this, Valerius." Alistair's voice was firm, but Anya saw the subtle tension in his jaw, the barely perceptible tremor in his hand. He understood the gravity of Valerius's threat. Valerius merely raised an eyebrow, unaffected. "Oh, but I already have. The choice is made. Just not by me." Panic seized Anya, a cold, clenching fist in her chest. She needed to act. Her eyes searched Alistair's, seeking an answer, a sign, anything. He met her gaze, his expression a mixture of fear for her, and an unwavering, almost reckless determination. A silent message passed between them. A desperate understanding. Anya felt a surge of adrenaline, sharpening her senses. She had to do something. Her hand, shaking almost imperceptibly, began to move. It drifted downwards, towards the smooth, cool surface of the pedestal. Her fingers brushed the cold metal underside, searching for the concealed panel. The system was designed with two switches, side-by-side. One, a small, recessed button, would trigger the full alarm protocol, alerting every security team member and trapping Valerius. Another, a slightly larger, flush plate, would discreetly disarm the bespoke security measures Alistair had implemented, allowing Valerius a clean exit, and perhaps even framing Alistair. The weight of her decision pressed down, a physical burden. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Valerius's eyes, dark and knowing, followed her every move. A predatory smirk played on his lips. He was enjoying this. The agony of her choice was his ultimate victory. Alistair remained still, his focus entirely on Anya, a silent plea in his intense gaze. He trusted her. Could she betray that trust? Could she condemn her family? An impossible choice. Suddenly, a shrill, deafening blast tore through the air. The emergency alarm. Every light in the gallery flickered violently, plunging the room into momentary darkness, then back to a sickly, pulsing glow. A loud CRASH shattered the oppressive silence, followed by the splintering sound of glass. A figure burst through the high arched window, raining shards onto the polished floor. Black tactical gear. A masked face. The figure landed with a soft thud, rolling, then rising in one fluid motion. A gun, dark and menacing, was instantly leveled. Directly at Alistair. Anya's fingers, cold and trembling, were just inches from the hidden switch. Her mind screamed. Which one?
