Chapter 38: The Trap is Set

Fingers drummed a steady rhythm on polished mahogany. Alistair’s eyes, sharp as obsidian shards, scanned the detailed blueprint spread across his desk. Every logistical detail for the upcoming gala had been meticulously planned, leaving no room for error. The stakes were too high.
His lips curved into a faint, predatory smile. Soon, Valerius would find himself ensnared in a web of his own making, a public spectacle designed for maximum humiliation.
Over the past few days, Alistair had personally overseen the preparations. He wanted perfection. He wanted opulence. He wanted the world to watch.
Selecting the Grand Imperial Ballroom at the Langham, he’d commissioned a renowned event planner. He spared no expense, envisioning an evening that would be spoken of for decades.
Crystal chandeliers glittered in his mind's eye. Velvet drapes. A curated guest list of the city's most influential art collectors, critics, and philanthropists. Valerius would have no choice but to attend.
Receiving a text, Alistair checked his phone. It was from his informant, a curt message confirming Valerius had accepted the invitation. A low chuckle rumbled in Alistair’s chest. The bait was taken.
Meanwhile, Anya felt the crushing weight of the world pressing down on her. Her mother’s voice still echoed in her ears, hollow and desperate. Maya's condition had worsened, the experimental procedure her only hope.
Cost? Unfathomable. Time? Less than a week.
Sleepless nights blurred into agonizing days. Anya paced her small apartment, the silence amplifying her panic. Every option she considered led to a dead end, every path blocked by the insurmountable sum of money required.
Her phone vibrated. Alistair. His timing, as always, was disturbingly precise.
"Anya," his voice, smooth and unyielding, filled the receiver. "I trust you've had time to consider our arrangement. The gala preparations are nearing completion."
Swallowing hard, Anya gripped the phone tighter. Her knuckles whitened. "Maya… she needs the surgery, Alistair. Now. It’s urgent."
"Indeed," he responded, without a hint of sympathy. "Which means you understand the gravity of your commitment. The price, as we discussed, is steep. But the reward, for your sister, is life itself."
Hot tears pricked Anya’s eyes. She hated him. Hated this. But her sister's face, pale and fragile, flashed behind her eyelids. There was no other way.
"I'll do it," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Whatever you need. Just… ensure the funds are ready. The moment it's done."
"Rest assured," Alistair said, a hint of satisfaction in his tone. "My word is my bond. The funds will be transferred the instant your masterpiece is unveiled and accepted. Not a moment before. Not a moment after."
He continued, his voice shifting to a more businesslike cadence. "We will present it as a recently discovered work from an overlooked period of the master's early career. The narrative is crucial. It must feel authentic, a genuine rediscovery."
"I've sourced the perfect materials," Anya replied, her voice flat. "Old canvas, pigments from the correct era. The technique will be flawless. No one will doubt it."
She imagined the hours she would spend, hunched over a canvas, breathing life into a lie. A lie that would save her sister.
"Excellent," Alistair murmured. "I'll send a car for you tomorrow morning. We'll finalize the display details. Remember, Anya, this isn't just about painting a picture. It's about crafting an illusion so perfect, the very foundation of Valerius's reputation will crumble under its weight."
Disconnecting the call, Anya dropped her phone onto the sofa. She felt hollowed out, an empty vessel. The artist in her recoiled, but the sister screamed for survival.
Later that evening, Alistair made a final call. "Is everything secured for the Valerius exhibition space?" he asked his head of security.
"Yes, Mr. Thorne. Every piece cataloged, every sensor active. Nothing can get in or out without our knowledge." The security chief’s voice was crisp.
"Good," Alistair said. He walked over to his liquor cabinet, pouring a measure of aged scotch. He raised the glass, not in a toast, but in silent anticipation.
He watched the city lights twinkle below, a sprawling tapestry of ambition and deceit. Valerius, for too long, had operated with impunity.
Now, his reckoning was at hand.
He took a slow sip, the warmth spreading through him. The plan was flawless. Anya, driven by desperation, was the perfect instrument.
Everything was in place. The venue, the guest list, the narrative, the trap.
His eyes narrowed, gleaming in the low light. The stage is set, Anya. Soon, Valerius will pay for his sins.
