Chapter 3 of 10
The Crucible of Slag
1.5k words
The Skola of Sanguine Metallurgy’s grand gate, a monstrous maw of soot-stained iron, loomed over the assembled students. Sunlight, filtered through the perpetual Velkigradian smog, painted their pristine uniforms in sickly shades of grey. Ignac stood among them, his own tunic, though clean, lacking the intricate embroidery that denoted true aristocratic lineage. Beside him, Milos Vran preened, adjusting the silver clasps of his arm-guards. Zora Kolar, her fair hair braided intricately, clutched a leather-bound tome, her gaze distant, already lost in prayer or premonition.
“The Crucible of Slag awaits!” bellowed Rector Zygmunt, his voice amplified by a resonating charm. “You will descend into the Glacial Gristle-Pits. Harvest the marrow of a Primeval Scab-Beast. Return with your trophy, and your path to the Forges of Iron is clear. Commoners, remember your contract. You are the vanguard, the distraction. Keep our prospective Hegemony lords safe, and your families receive their stipend. Fail, and you receive nothing.”
Ignac watched the two dozen conscripts, their skin ashen, their worn tunics clashing with the opulent attire of the young lords. He recognized a few: young Davor, whose mother worked the Vran textile mills, and Lena, whose father had lost a hand to a Charnel-Mekh. They were cannon fodder. He filed away their faces. Their ends, if properly steered, could yield a bountiful asset.
As the iron gate ground open, revealing a gaping maw of darkness and chilled air, the students streamed in. The Glacial Gristle-Pits were a labyrinth of excavated rock and raw, exposed earth, shored up by temporary steel beams. The air grew heavy, damp, smelling of ancient stone and a sweet, metallic decay. Milos, leading their designated group of five aristocrats and ten serfs, marched with an assured stride. Zora floated behind him, her eyes scanning the shadows, a faint aura of pale light beginning to bloom around her outstretched hands.
The other betrayers were here too. The Volkov heir, a hulking youth whose family controlled the Hegemony’s rail lines, swaggered with a massive, un-forged iron maul strapped to his back. Radek Skovran, lean and sharp-eyed, a master of political maneuvering even at this age, whispered ceaselessly into the ear of Eliska Novak, whose family owned the largest Sanguine Quarries. These were his marks, his karmic investments.
“Alright, skirmish line!” Milos barked, his voice echoing. “Spread out. Flush out anything that moves. We’ll follow your trails.”
The lowborn, their faces taut, fanned out, their improvised torches casting dancing shadows. Davor, clutching a dull iron spear, glanced back at Ignac. Ignac met his gaze, a cold, empty promise in his eyes. He wouldn’t save them. Not directly. Not if there was a better return.
Minutes later, the first shriek ripped through the subterranean gloom. Ignac, moving with an almost unnatural swiftness for his bulky frame, positioned himself just behind Zora and Milos. A pack of Grime-Beasts, their fur matted with dried ichor and industrial sludge, burst from a side tunnel, snarling. Their fangs, sharpened by years of gnawing on slag, glinted in the torchlight.
One beast lunged for Zora, its yellowed teeth snapping. Ignac threw himself forward, a shield of flesh. The impact drove the air from his ribs, its claws tearing through his tunic and into his shoulder. He grunted, a sound of effort, not pain, as he grabbed the beast by the scruff and hurled it against the cavern wall. It crumpled, whimpering.

Another beast, larger, its eyes glowing with feral hunger, leaped towards Milos. Ignac intercepted it, twisting his body to take the impact along his ribs. A crack echoed through bone. He exhaled sharply, remaining upright, his grip on the creature’s throat locked. Milos, startled, swung his heavy-bladed training sword, severing the mongrel's spine with a clean cut. He wiped his blade clean on matted fur, a triumphant smirk on his lips.
“Loyalty, Ignac, true loyalty!” Milos exclaimed, oblivious to the shallow, rapid breaths Ignac was taking. “You truly are my best friend.”

Zora, her pale light now a steady glow around her hands, quickly laid a rudimentary healing spell on Ignac’s shoulder, a warmth spreading through the lacerated flesh. “Are you alright, Ignac?” she asked, her voice soft with genuine concern. “That was… incredibly brave.”

More scavengers appeared, drawn by the scent of spilled iron. From a deeper tunnel, a guttural howl echoed – a larger beast. Ignac saw an opportunity. He pointed to a narrow choke point ahead, where Davor and Lena, along with two other commoners, were holding their ground nervously.
“Milos, Zora! To that bottleneck!” Ignac wheezed, feigning exhaustion. “The main pack will converge there. Davor and his group can hold them for a moment. It’s our best chance to flank the alpha.” His voice was low, urgent, laced with a calculated desperation.
Milos grinned. “Excellent strategy, Ignac! A true tactician!” He nudged Zora. “Come, Saintess, let’s show them what Velkigrad’s finest can do!”
They moved, leaving the four pawns to face the growing swarm of beasts. Ignac watched Davor realize the true meaning of front-line bait. The boy raised his spear, knees trembling. Lena, more pragmatic, shoved him forward, screaming a desperate challenge at the advancing pack. Snarls and panicked shouts dissolved into wet tearing noises. The fodder vanished under a thrashing mass of hides.

With the pack distracted, Milos, Zora, Volkov, Radek, and Eliska engaged the Alpha Scab-Beast – a grotesque monstrosity of mottled grey hide and razor-sharp bone plates – from an advantageous position. Ignac, though battered, moved with renewed purpose, taking hits that would have crippled lesser men, positioning himself to draw the beast’s most devastating attacks, all while protecting his targets. His every absorbed blow, every near-fatal scratch, converted into a currency of deferred agony.
Zora's nascent holy magic flared, weaving protective wards that shimmered around Milos. Volkov swung his maul with bone-splintering force, denting the beast’s carapace. Radek and Eliska worked in tandem, creating diversions, their combined efforts guiding Milos towards the beast’s weak points. Finally, with a roar of triumph, Milos plunged his blade deep into the Scab-Beast’s exposed throat, twisting the steel until the monstrous creature shuddered and fell. Its dying groan reverberated through the pits.
“The core! Quick, Ignac, help me extract it!” Milos commanded, his face flushed with adrenaline. Ignac, his tunic in tatters, ribs aching, knelt beside the fallen beast. He expertly carved open the thickest limb, exposing glistening, obsidian-black pulp. It pulsed with a faint, dark energy – prime quality.

Back in the Skola’s grand Forging Hall, the air thrummed with heat and the rhythmic crash of sledges. Milos, having secured the highest quality core, stood before a roaring hearth. The raw material, refined into a glowing ingot, floated above the molten iron in the crucible. Sparks sprayed as he began to strike the nascent blade, shaping his graduation weapon. He was the center of attention, the prodigy. Ignac, ostensibly assisting with stoking the forge, lingered nearby.
As Milos stepped away for a moment, wiping sweat from his brow, Ignac moved. From a hidden compartment in his belt, he withdrew a small, obsidian vial. It contained his own blood, specially treated by the Karmic Usury. Its surface shimmered with an almost invisible, dark energy. With a swift, practiced motion, he uncorked it and let a single, thick drop fall into the swirling, incandescent iron. It sizzled, vanished, and left no trace.

The molten metal glowed, seemingly unchanged. But Ignac knew. Milos’s weapon, the very symbol of his triumph, was now an extension of Ignac’s growing ledger. He watched Milos return, his face alight with pride, completely unaware that his most prized possession, the very essence of his future power, now carried a silent, binding lien. The first anchor was set. The remaining four betrayers would follow. Slowly, meticulously, their souls would be drawn into his dark ledger of debt, each binding pulled tighter until the Night of the Red Iron, ten years from now, arrived, and he could collect in spectacular fashion. He just needed to ensure Radovan finished his work before the Skola’s next brutal trial. The thought of Radovan brought a fleeting, unpleasant image of the collapsed tenement, but Ignac immediately banished it. Such distractions were unproductive. He allowed a cold, predatory curve of his lips as Milos’s sledge rang out, forging his own doom.
