Chapter 1 of 1

A Goddess Has Appeared!!

1.3k words

It was an insufferably loud Tuesday at Apex Logistics. Across the open-plan office floor, excitement hummed like a live wire. Streamers hung from the ceiling, a colorful heap of balloons wobbled near the entrance, and a massive cake sat on the central breakroom table. Everyone was buzzing about the new arrival—a heroic, idolized figure who was joining their ranks today. Everyone except Harvey Griffin. Harvey sat tucked away in his glass-walled corner office, completely immune to the chaos outside. He had dark hair, an average build with zero muscle to speak of, and a pair of thick glasses that kept slipping down the bridge of his nose. He wasn't particularly handsome, but he had an earnest, quiet face. Around the building, he was known as the most hardworking and reliable senior employee in the entire department. People respected him immensely, even if his awkwardness made him a bit hard to talk to at times. Outside his door, his coworkers were practically bouncing off the walls, gossiping about the guest. Their voices drifted past his glass walls, but the words didn't register in Harvey’s brain. He was completely locked in, his fingers flying across his keyboard as he reviewed supply chain reports. Suddenly, the door to his office swung open. In walked Connor Tennison. Connor was a large, broad-shouldered man—a true bear of a guy, complete with a warm beard, a ruggedly handsome face, and a thick frame that filled out his suit. He radiated a constant, bright, positive energy that made it impossible for anyone to dislike him. "Harvey! My favorite worker bee," Connor boomed with a wide, bright smile. "What are you still doing glued to your desk? Come on, she’s going to be here any minute! You need to get out there and join the welcoming committee." Harvey didn't stop typing. "I have three client files to finish before noon, Connor. Besides, I'm assigned to show her around and teach her the ropes today anyway. She’ll end up in this office eventually. There’s no point in me standing up, walking over there, and stopping my work just to greet her early." Connor chuckled, stepping closer to the desk. "Always so practical." Before Harvey could react, Connor reached down and gently snapped Harvey’s laptop screen shut. "Hey—!" Harvey started, but Connor stepped up right beside his chair, leaning down and clapping a big, heavy arm around Harvey’s shoulders in a casual, friendly squeeze. "Listen to me, Harvey," Connor said softly, his tone full of warm affection. "You’re a leader here. The other workers look up to you as an inspiration. And because you’ve done such a great job setting an example, everyone on this floor is reliable. The company won't collapse if you loosen up for ten minutes. Come celebrate." Harvey froze completely. He was terrible at socializing, but he was even worse with unexpected physical affection. His entire body tensed up under Connor’s broad arm, his heart hammering against his ribs. A bright, burning pink flush spread rapidly across his cheeks, running all the way to the tips of his ears. "O-Okay," Harvey squeaked, his voice betraying him. "Fine. I’m coming." Connor laughed, taking his arm away and patting Harvey’s back before leading the way out. Harvey let out a small breath, trying to fan his warm face as he followed the big man out to the main lobby area. The whole team gathered near the double doors, holding party poppers and waiting eagerly. The story behind their new coworker was legendary. She had worked at Zenith Corp, their biggest rival company. Zenith was notorious for its corrupt higher-ups and shady deals. But this woman hadn't tolerated it. Single-handedly, she had gathered evidence, exposed the corruption to the public, and brought the entire corporation crashing down. She was praised by the media as an office hero. And since Zenith went under, Harvey’s company had eagerly snapped her up. Her name was Evelyn Sylren. Harvey leaned against a pillar, expecting the door to open and reveal a tall, imposing, intimidating woman with a cold stare. A woman capable of destroying a corporate empire on her own. The front doors slid open. Confetti burst into the air, and everyone cheered. Harvey squinted through his glasses—and blinked in utter disbelief. Standing in the doorway was a girl who looked like she had just stepped out of a high school classroom. She was tiny. Because Harvey himself was quite small and slim, he instantly noticed that they were basically the exact same height. She had cute, delicate features, bright blonde hair, and wore a neat office uniform that seemed almost too big for her. She offered everyone a sweet, gentle, adorable smile as she thanked them for the warm welcome. That's her? Harvey thought, staring in shock. She took down a multi-million dollar rival company by herself? She looks like she’d apologize if you accidentally stepped on her foot. While everyone was crowding around her, Connor stepped forward, his tall frame towering over the crowd. He gracefully cleared a path and drew Evelyn’s attention toward Harvey. "Evelyn, welcome to the team!" Connor said cheerfully. "I’d like you to meet Harvey Griffin. He’s going to be your senior, and he'll be helping you get settled in." Evelyn turned her bright eyes toward Harvey and gave a polite, sweet bow. "It's so wonderful to meet you, Mr. Griffin! I'm looking forward to learning from you." Harvey swallowed, trying to shake off his awkwardness. He kept his words brief and to the point. "Welcome to the company, Miss Sylren. It’s nice to meet you. If you don't mind, let's continue this conversation in my office where it's quieter." Connor chuckled, looking at Evelyn. "Don't mind him, Evelyn. Harvey is a bit timid and doesn't speak much, but I promise you, he is the absolute most reliable person in this entire building." Connor then turned to Harvey with a mischievous, nostalgic grin. "You know, Evelyn, Harvey was actually under my supervision when he first started here years ago. The very first day I greeted him, he got so flustered his face went bright red and he had a full-blown nosebleed right on my desk!" "Connor!" Harvey gasped, his face instantly flushing pink all over again as he shoved his glasses up his nose in embarrassment. Evelyn giggled softly behind her hand, finding the exchange endearing. Once they managed to escape the party in the lobby, they retreated into Harvey's quiet office. Leaving the embarrassing stories behind, Harvey got straight to business. He carefully ran Evelyn through the company’s daily protocols, explained the software layout, handed her the necessary paperwork, and detailed the specific responsibilities of her new role. He pointed out where her desk was located just outside his glass walls and gave her a clear outline of what her first week would look like. Throughout the explanation, Evelyn listened attentively, nodding politely and taking neat notes. When the debriefing was finally over, Connor stepped back into the office with a warm smile, taking over to lead Evelyn to her new desk and introduce her to her immediate neighbors. As the door clicked shut behind them, the heavy silence returned to the small glass room. Harvey slowly sank back into his office chair. He took off his glasses, set them on his desk, and buried his face in his hands. He let out a long, heavy sigh of absolute exhaustion. Between the crowd, the loud cheering, the teasing, and Connor putting his arm around him, he felt like all his energy had been completely drained. He closed his eyes for a quiet moment, praying that the rest of his day would be calm and entirely free of any more surprise social interactions. (Hello guys! There's no chapter comment i.
