Chapter 43: The Twin Stirs
863 words
Adrenaline still hummed beneath Elara's skin. The memory of Silas’s face, contorted in barely controlled rage, replayed in her mind. She'd pushed him. Hard.
Now, she waited.
Waited for the inevitable retaliation. His eyes had burned with a promise of retribution. No doubt he was already spinning his web.
Pacing her private study, Elara traced the spine of a forgotten book. The gala's glamour felt like a distant dream. Reality was a cold, sharp edge.
Every shadow seemed to lengthen, every silence to deepen. She expected a phone call, a coded message, a news report designed to undermine her.
Instead, an unfamiliar number flashed on her secure phone. Her heart gave a jolt. This wasn't Adrian's line. Not Maeve's.
Hesitantly, she answered. "Elara Vance." Her voice, surprisingly steady.
"Ms. Vance," a formal, clipped tone greeted her. "This is Dr. Harrison from St. Jude's Hospital."
A knot tightened in Elara's stomach. Lyra. What now? Had something gone wrong?
"Yes, Doctor?" she prompted, her grip on the phone whitening.
"We have… unexpected developments regarding Lyra Vance's condition," he continued, a note of cautious excitement in his voice. "She's showing significant neurological activity."
Elara’s breath hitched. "Neurological activity? What exactly does that mean?"
"It means," Dr. Harrison paused, a dramatic flair in his delivery, "she's responding. We've seen eye movement. Slight hand twitches. And just moments ago, she vocalized."
Her blood ran cold. Vocalized?
This was impossible. Lyra was supposed to be deep in a coma, stable but unresponsive. A medical marvel, a tragic figure. Not waking. Not *now*.
"Are you certain?" Elara pressed, her voice barely a whisper. The carefully constructed facade, years in the making, suddenly felt like a house of cards in a gale.
"Absolutely certain, Ms. Vance. Our monitors are clear. We're running a full battery of tests. This is truly remarkable. A miracle, some might say."
Miracle. For Elara, it was a catastrophe.
Lyra, awake, would shatter everything. Her identity. Her mission. Her very existence in this life.
What would Lyra remember? Would she recognize Elara? Would she expose her?
A cold sweat slicked Elara's palms. Silas's fury, the grand plan against him – all of it paled in comparison to this immediate, existential threat.
Her twin, stirring from the depths, could unravel her with a single word.
"Keep me updated, Doctor," Elara managed, forcing composure into her tone. "Hourly, if necessary."
She hung up, the phone feeling heavy in her hand. Her mind raced, processing the implications. Lyra, the silent figure in the hospital bed, was her most potent weapon and her greatest vulnerability.
This was a nightmare. A sudden, terrifying twist she hadn't anticipated.
Silas. He'd hear about this. The news would spread like wildfire through their circles. What would he do? Would he see it as an opportunity? Or a threat to his own carefully crafted narrative?
He'd benefited from Lyra's coma. It solidified his image as the grieving husband, the stoic pillar of the Vance empire. Lyra's awakening could challenge his version of events.
But it challenged Elara's even more.
Her entire life, for the past two years, had been Lyra. She'd walked in her shoes, worn her face, lived her public life.
Returning to her own identity was not an option. Not yet. Not until Silas was completely exposed.
Elara stalked to the window, staring out at the city lights. Each flicker seemed to mock her. The meticulous planning, the calculated risks, all hinged on Lyra remaining in a static state.
Now, a dynamic element was introduced. An unpredictable variable.
She needed to secure her position. To ensure that if Lyra did fully awaken, her story would align with Elara’s. Or, at the very least, not contradict it fatally.
But how? How could she influence a mind that had been adrift for so long?
The thought sent a fresh wave of panic through her. Lyra’s memories. What if she remembered the accident? What if she remembered seeing *Elara*?
Her past. Their shared secrets. All could come crashing down.
Elara rubbed her temples, trying to clear the frantic thoughts. Focus. She needed to think clearly.
Silas's counter-move was no longer her primary concern. This was far more pressing.
She had to visit Lyra. Immediately. See for herself. Assess the situation.
But what if Lyra recognized her? What if her eyes, opening after all this time, locked onto Elara’s and saw the truth?
A chill permeated her bones. This was it. The moment of reckoning.
Just as she reached for her coat, the phone rang again. Same number. Dr. Harrison.
Elara snatched it up. "Doctor? Is she stable?"
"Ms. Vance, another development," his voice was hushed, urgent. "She's more responsive than we initially thought."
Her heart hammered against her ribs. "What is it?"
"She's calling out a name," Dr. Harrison stated, a palpable sense of awe in his tone. "Repeatedly."
Elara held her breath, bracing for the worst. For a name that would expose her.
"She's calling out... Adrian."
