Chapter 34: The Investigator's Shadow
1.1k words
Shaking hands clutched the cool ceramic mug. Lena stared at the swirling steam, her vision unfocused. The truth about Willow Creek Holdings, about Elias Thorne, burned behind her eyes. Julian knew. He had known all along.
A tap on her shoulder startled her. Turning, Lena met the bland, professional gaze of a woman she didn't recognize. Her tailored suit was impeccable, her smile a practiced curve. "Ms. Petrova? Do you have a moment?"
"Yes?" Lena's voice came out thin. A prickle of unease snaked up her spine. This woman wasn't from their department.
"My name is Eleanor Vance." The woman offered a card: 'Vance & Associates: Consulting Services.' "I'm conducting a routine verification for a client."
Lena frowned. "Verification? For what?" Her grip tightened on the mug. This woman had walked right into Julian's fortress.
Eleanor's smile didn't waver. "Just a few general questions about employee satisfaction and work-life balance. We're interested in understanding employee routines better." Her eyes held a curious, probing quality.
"My routine?" Lena echoed, her heart quickening. She thought of her frantic lunch breaks, the hushed conversations, the hurried trips.
"Yes. We've noted you often step out during your lunch hour." Eleanor’s voice remained neutral. "Do you find the local amenities satisfactory? Are you meeting friends? Family?"
A cold dread settled in Lena's stomach. This wasn't about satisfaction. "I... I run errands."
"Of course." Eleanor nodded slowly. "But your errands seem consistent. Do you frequent any particular establishments?" Her tone was casual, yet the questions felt like invisible threads tightening.
Lena felt a flush creep up her neck. This was surveillance. "I'm not sure what this has to do with 'employee satisfaction,' Ms. Vance." She tried to sound frosty.
"Purely data collection, Ms. Petrova." Eleanor shrugged. "We're simply trying to build a comprehensive picture. For example, your visits to the local historical society archives. Is that part of your 'errands'?"
Lena's breath hitched. The historical society. How did this woman know? Her facade crumbled. Fear pierced through her. Julian. It had to be Julian.
"I... I have a personal interest in local history," Lena stammered, scrambling for an excuse. She was always so careful.
Eleanor's lips curved subtly. "Fascinating. A specific era, perhaps? Or a particular family? The Blackwood family, for instance?"
Lena felt the blood drain from her face. Her hand trembled. This wasn't random. It was targeted. Julian had sent her.
"I... I don't think I need to discuss my personal interests with you," Lena managed, voice barely a whisper. She needed space.
Eleanor simply smiled, thin and knowing. "Understood, Ms. Petrova. Thank you for your time." She turned and disappeared, leaving a chilling silence.
Lena slumped into her chair, heart hammering. He knew. Julian knew she was investigating. He had been watching her. Panic surged.
Hours later, the afternoon dragged, heavy with unspoken tension. Every glance felt like an accusation. She kept her head down, but her vision blurred with unshed tears.
Shadows lengthened outside. Most employees had left. Lena packed her bag slowly. She dreaded facing Julian, but staying felt impossible.
"Lena."
His voice, deep and resonant, cut through the quiet. Lena froze, back to him. She knew this moment was coming.
She turned, slowly. Julian stood near his office doorframe. Arms crossed, posture relaxed, but his eyes held an intensity that made her stomach clench.
"Julian," she managed, voice raspy. She clutched her bag strap, knuckles white.
"Leaving so soon?" He walked towards her with deliberate steps. Each echoed, amplifying the tension.
"It's... the end of the day," she murmured, trying to sound normal. It was futile. Her body screamed with nerves.
He stopped directly in front of her, towering. His cologne, usually comforting, now felt suffocating. "I had a visitor today," he said, voice deceptively soft.
Lena swallowed hard. This was it. The confrontation. "Oh?" she feigned, attempting ignorance. Her gaze darted away.
"A consultant." Julian's lips quirked, no humor in his eyes. "Eleanor Vance. She was very thorough. Very informative."
Her blood ran cold. He was toying with her. "I... I spoke to her too. About employee satisfaction."
A low chuckle escaped him, devoid of warmth. "Employee satisfaction? Is that what she told you?" He leaned closer, voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "She told me a great deal more than that, Lena. About your 'errands.' About your 'personal interests.'"
Lena's throat tightened. No escape. She was trapped. The air crackled with his barely contained anger.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she lied, words tasting like ash. Her heart hammered frantically.
His eyes, usually warm hazel, were now chips of ice. A muscle twitched in his jaw. "Don't you?" He moved closer, invading her space until she instinctively stepped back.
"You've been very busy, haven't you, Lena?" His voice was a low growl, each word a hammer blow. "Skipping out on lunch, making discreet inquiries. Sending emails to old university contacts." He knew everything.
She shook her head, a futile denial. Tears pricked, but she refused to let them fall. Not now.
"I find it interesting," he continued, ignoring her silent protest, "that a woman with 'no interest' in her past, who claimed a fresh start, suddenly develops keen curiosity about a particular family's history. A particular estate."
Her breath hitched. He knew about Blackwood. He knew what she had found. The thought that he had allowed her to discover the truth, all while knowing, made betrayal wash over her.
Julian’s gaze hardened further, stripping her of pretense. He reached out, hand gently but firmly taking her chin, tilting her face up to meet his eyes. His thumb stroked her jawline, a gesture usually soothing, now sending shivers of fear down her spine.
"I asked you a question, Lena." His voice was low and dangerous, each syllable laced with a threat. "Where exactly do you disappear to during your lunch breaks?"
