Chapter 13 of 50

A Risky Escape

644 words

Pinching the bridge of her nose, Lena reviewed the meticulously crafted schedule one last time. Every minute was accounted for, every excuse rehearsed. Julian’s demanding presence made this covert operation a high-stakes gamble. She couldn’t afford a single misstep. Today was Leo’s specialist appointment, a visit she’d been dreading and planning for weeks. He needed this, and she needed to protect him from Julian’s scrutiny. Whispering to her son, Lena helped him into his small coat. "Just a quick trip, sweet pea. A special doctor, remember?" Leo, innocent and trusting, nodded, his big eyes wide. His hand found hers, a warm anchor in the storm of her anxiety. Silently, she slipped a pre-written note onto her desk, a fabricated excuse about a "personal errand" in town. Vague enough to be plausible, specific enough to explain her absence. Glancing at the antique clock on the mantel, Lena noted the time. Julian was in his morning meeting, a long one, according to Mrs. Jenkins. This was her window. Moving quickly, she guided Leo through the back corridors, a route less trafficked by staff. Each shadow seemed to lengthen, each distant sound amplified her pounding heart. Exiting through a discreet side door, they were out. The crisp morning air hit her face, a jolt of cold reality. Her modest car, a stark contrast to Julian's fleet, waited a short distance away. Starting the engine, she felt a tremor of apprehension. Accelerating down the long, winding driveway, Lena gripped the steering wheel. The estate receded in her rearview mirror, a grand, imposing cage. Driving through the quiet town, her mind raced. What if Julian finished early? What if Mrs. Jenkins mentioned her note? "Are we going to see the dragons, Mama?" Leo asked, his voice cutting through her thoughts. Smiling faintly, Lena squeezed his hand. "Not dragons today, love. Just a very kind doctor." Parking in the clinic lot, she noted the anonymity of the place. It was far from the estate, far from prying eyes. Inside, the sterile smell of disinfectant filled her nostrils. Leo was brave, sitting patiently as the specialist examined him with gentle hands. "His progress is good, Lena," the doctor murmured, reviewing charts. "But we still need to monitor him closely. These follow-ups are crucial." Crucial. The word echoed in her head. More crucial than Julian’s rules, more crucial than her job, more crucial than her own safety. Signing some forms, Lena paid the bill with money she’d carefully saved, a secret fund for Leo's needs. Every penny was a testament to her determination. Bundling Leo back into the car, she checked the time again. They were running tight. Too tight. Merging onto the main road, she pressed the accelerator, pushing her old car a little harder than usual. The sun glinted off the windshield, momentarily blinding her. Her chest tightened with each passing mile. The return journey felt longer, fraught with escalating tension. What if she was already too late? Imagining Julian’s cold, assessing gaze, a shiver ran down her spine. He didn't tolerate insubordination, let alone deception. Approaching the turn-off for the estate, she slowed down, her eyes scanning the road ahead. Her breath hitched. Rounding the bend, the imposing wrought-iron gates of the estate came into view. And just then, a sleek black car, its windows tinted, began to pull away from them. It was a luxury sedan, powerful and unmistakable. Eerily similar to Julian’s, almost identical. It sped past her, a dark blur. A cold wave washed over Lena. Her heart leaped into her throat, a frantic bird trapped in her ribs. Had he just left? Or had he arrived? Had he seen her? Her foot instinctively lifted from the gas. Her knuckles turned white on the steering wheel. The black car vanished around the next bend, leaving her utterly breathless, her carefully constructed escape suddenly feeling terribly exposed.
