Chapter 28: A Precarious Alliance
538 words
Pacing the sterile hospital hallway, Julian's jaw ached. Clara’s words, 'It affects Lily too,' drilled into his skull, a cruel echo. He envisioned his daughter, her bright eyes, her innocent laughter. A cold dread seeped into his bones. His fury at Clara warred with a primal fear for both his children.
Suddenly, a nurse rushed past, her face grim. She spoke urgently into a comms device. Julian’s stomach dropped. His heart hammered against his ribs. He knew instantly.
Bursting through the ICU doors, a cacophony of alarms assaulted him. Doctors and nurses swarmed around Leo’s bed. The boy’s tiny body convulsed. Monitors shrieked. A doctor barked orders, his voice tight with panic.
Leo’s breath hitched, a desperate, shallow gasp. His skin was ashen, almost translucent. Seeing him, so fragile, so utterly helpless, Julian felt a sharp, gut-wrenching pain. All the anger, all the betrayal, momentarily receded.
Only Leo mattered. His promise. His son.
Standing frozen, Julian watched as they fought for Leo's life. He couldn't move, couldn't breathe. A chilling silence fell when the alarms momentarily quieted, replaced by the frantic hiss of a ventilator.
Clara materialized beside him, her face pale, streaked with tears. Her gaze was locked on Leo. A raw, unvarnished terror radiated from her.
"He's crashing," she whispered, her voice hoarse. "Again."
Julian turned to her, his eyes blazing. "What is happening? What did you *do*?"
"There's a new treatment," she interrupted, ignoring his accusation. "Highly experimental. Dr. Aris developed it. It's our only chance."
He scoffed, a bitter sound. "More secrets? More half-truths, Clara?"
"This isn't about me!" Her voice cracked, a desperate plea. "It's for Leo. It targets the specific genetic markers, Julian. It could reverse the cellular degradation."
Julian's fists clenched. He wanted to scream, to lash out. Every fiber of his being screamed 'liar.' Yet, the image of Leo, barely clinging to life, overshadowed everything.
Looking back at the boy, his chest barely rising and falling, Julian felt a profound helplessness. His oath to Leo resonated deeply. He had promised to protect him, to save him.
"Explain it," he demanded, his voice low and dangerous. "Every single detail. No omissions. No lies."
Clara nodded, her eyes wide with a fragile hope. "It's a gene-editing therapy. CRISPR-based. It's designed to correct the faulty allele directly within the bone marrow. They've only done preclinical trials, and one compassionate use case in Europe that showed promise, but..."
"But what?" Julian pressed, his impatience a palpable force.
"The risks are significant," she admitted, her gaze dropping. "Immune rejection, off-target edits, potential for secondary cancers down the line. It's a gamble. A huge one."
Risks. More risks. His blood ran cold. He thought of Lily again. The terrifying implication of her shared genetic vulnerability. If this went wrong, what then?
"How significant?" he asked, his voice strained. "Give me percentages. Give me data."
She hesitated. "The data is limited, Julian. That's the point of 'experimental'. But without it, Leo won't survive the week. His organs are failing. His body is shutting down. This is truly the last resort."
His eyes narrowed, scrutinizing her face. No cunning. Only terror. Only desperation. For the first time, he saw a sliver of the same fear that gripped him.
