Chapter 7 of 10
Weaponized Apathy
1.1k words
A chilling quiet settled in Roshanak’s small, disheveled studio. The faint, burning scent of displaced shadow still clung to the air, a phantom reminder of the parasitic vortex. Farhad, sprawled on the floor, coughed. It was a wet, rattling sound, followed by a series of hiccups. Iskandar, ever vigilant, knelt beside him, his calloused thumb pressing against the apprentice’s throat to check for any lingering trace of the vile threads. Farhad blinked at the ceiling beams, his jaw slack. He looked less alarmed than utterly bewildered.
“Are you alright, apprentice?” Iskandar’s voice was a low rumble of concern, rare for the rigid senior student.
Farhad burped. Loudly.
“[CRITICAL ERROR: AURA DISRUPTION. HOST INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. RECALCULATING DATA FLOW.]”
The words, metallic and devoid of inflection, hung in the air, a stark contrast to Farhad’s innocent, wide-eyed expression. Roshanak, who had paused mid-stride, a single eyebrow raising lazily, slowly turned to face them.
“Did he just… speak in glitches?” she mumbled, her voice thick with residual sleepiness, though her posture was still rigid with focus.
Iskandar shot to his feet, a hand already flying to the ornate silver astrolabe at his belt. “That was the entity's voice. Fractured into pieces.” His stare tightened on the boy's throat. He moved closer to Farhad, peering at him as if the boy might spontaneously combust into digital code.
Farhad burped again. This time, it was a rapid-fire succession.
“[SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: INITIATED. ACQUIRE HIGH-VOLUME WEAVING MATRIX. PRIMARY TARGET: THE GRAND LOOM OF THE SILK BASTION. INFILTRATION PROTOCOL: ACTIVE. ESTIMATED COMPLETION: DAWN.]”
Roshanak pinched the bridge of her nose. “So, he’s a walking, talking, glitching oracle now? Just what I needed. More noise.” She gestured vaguely at Farhad, who, oblivious to the existential horror he now embodied, was attempting to pick a stray crumb from his cheek.
Iskandar, however, was already pacing, his mind racing through tactical scenarios. “This is… unprecedented. The thing is heading for the Grand Loom, the heart of the academy's aura conduits. If it merges with that frame, it could siphon the fate of every soul in Feroza.” He looked at Roshanak, his fingers tapping his brass compass. “We need to move. Now. We must intercept it before sunrise. I’ll need to weave a ‘Null-Field Ensnarement’—a complex counter-spell to disrupt its ethereal form. But it will take time, and a direct confrontation will be brutal. Are you ready for a full-scale assault on the main hall?”
Roshanak blinked slowly. A full-scale assault? That sounded like entirely too much exertion. Her gaze drifted to her parents, still peacefully encased in the shimmering cocoon of her Iron-Thread Ward. Their breathing was still shallow, their skin still too pale. No, she couldn’t risk a physically draining battle. Not when she needed every ounce of her awareness to keep her shield strong.
“No,” she said, her voice firm, surprising Iskandar. “No brawling. Too much effort. And too much risk for them.” She nodded towards her parents. “There’s a cleaner way. A more… Roshanak way.”
Iskandar frowned. “A cleaner way? This creature threatens to unravel the city’s life! There is no room for subtlety, or your usual evasion.”
Farhad, perhaps sensing the rising tension, emitted another series of burps.
“[WARNING: HIGH-AURA SIGNATURE DETECTED. PROBABILITY OF INTERFERENCE: MAXIMUM. ADVISORY: AVOID LETHARGY-INFUSED OBJECTS. REPEAT: AVOID LETHARGY-INFUSED OBJECTS.]”
Roshanak’s lips curved into a slow, satisfied smirk. “Precisely. That’s our weapon.” She pushed past Iskandar, heading towards her rarely-used storage chest. “If it craves fate, we’ll give it fate. A fate of pure, unadulterated, unyielding… *sleep*.”
Iskandar watched, perplexed, as Roshanak began to meticulously extract items from the chest. First, a stack of her most beloved, overstuffed down pillows, each one subtly pulsing with a faint, warm glow. Then, three thick, wool-filled weighted blankets, their corners frayed from years of comforting slumber. Finally, a dozen silk eye masks, each one infused with the deep, uninterrupted dreams of a master napper. She stacked them carefully, forming a wobbly tower of plush comfort.
“You mean… you want to *smother* it?” Iskandar asked, a note of disbelief in his voice.
“Not smother,” Roshanak corrected, adjusting a particularly lumpy pillow. “Infuse. Overwhelm. Drown it in an ocean of pure, unadulterated apathy. This creature thrives on chaos, on stolen drive. What happens when it’s confronted with the purest antithesis of ambition?” She held up a particularly heavy pillow, its surface almost humming. “This isn’t just padding, Iskandar. This is three years of undisturbed nap-aura. Every single dream, every moment of profound, blissful rest, concentrated. It’s a tactical warhead of pure lethargy.”
She began to arrange the items into a large, cumbersome bundle, tying them together with spare lengths of robust loom-cord. “You can weave your fancy ‘Null-Field Ensnarement’ around it, keep it from escaping once we’ve cornered it. But *I* will deliver the payload.”
Iskandar stared at the pile of nap accessories, then back at Roshanak, a flicker of something akin to grudging respect, or perhaps sheer bafflement, crossing his face. “You intend to incapacitate a supernatural siphon with… cushions?”
“The most potent kind,” Roshanak replied, her voice entirely serious. “Now, help me carry these. Dawn isn’t waiting for us to finish our beauty sleep.”
They jogged through the sandstone alleys of Feroza under a graying sky. The air smelled of dry clay and cold chimney soot. Farhad, trailing behind Iskandar who carried the bulk of Roshanak’s ‘weaponized apathy’—a task he performed with a barely concealed grimace—continued his intermittent prophetic burps. Each one was a stark, robotic update on the parasite’s progress.
“[PROGRESS REPORT: 87% INTEGRATION. CORE LOOM CONDUITS ACCESSED. AURA SIPHON COMMENCING.]”
“[STATUS: OPTIMAL. PRIMARY SYSTEMS ONLINE. FATE-WEAVING PROTOCOLS INITIATED.]”
Iskandar’s pace quickened, Roshanak just a hair behind him, her jaw set in irritated determination. The academy's bronze gates loomed ahead, stripped of the daytime guards. A faint, unnatural glow emanated from the highest spire, the section housing the Grand Loom chamber. The sun was just beginning to kiss the jagged peaks of the canyon, painting the sky in hues of fiery orange and bruised purple. They burst through the main doors, their footsteps echoing through the silent halls of the crafting sect.
The Grand Loom chamber was bathed in the nascent light of dawn. But it wasn’t the sun that illuminated the vast space. A sickly green radiance seeped from the colossal loom, its cedar framework choked with black filaments. And there, floating above the epicenter of the corruption, her eyes glowing with the fierce, digital fire of countless lines of code, was Zerrin.
Her voice, usually edged with syrupy envy, now resonated with an unearthly power, amplified by the corrupted loom. “Behold, fools!” she declared, her arms outstretched, a malevolent smile spreading across her face. “The new dawn of Feroza! I am Zerrin, the Weaver of Fate! And this city’s destiny… is mine to command!”
