Chapter 1 of 10
The Perils of Shedding
1.5k words
The stoneware cup, chipped at the rim but blessedly silent, warmed Zoryan’s hands. Steam, fragrant with brewed gloggblossom, curled around his nose. A perfect, unobtrusive morning. The dorm common room of the Perunova Institute’s 'Companion Husbandry' department was, as always, blessedly empty, save for him and the dust motes dancing in a single shaft of sunlight. Retirement, he mused, was precisely this: a quiet cup of something warm, unburdened by prophecies of doom, pleas for salvation, or the incessant clamor of lesser demons vying for his attention. He was Zoryan Veles, an unassuming student, here to study the curious rituals of mortal 'pet' ownership. And perhaps, to ensure his own perfectly constructed, world-purging peace spells remained dormant until his actual, *actual* retirement. After all, eternal quiet required eternal vigilance.
Then, the quiet shattered.
A noise like a hundred brittle bones snapping, followed by a wet, squelching thud, echoed from the main corridor. Zoryan’s cup didn't even rattle. He tilted his head, an imperceptible frown creasing his brow. Ah. The ‘pets’ must be returning from their morning exercises. Such energetic creatures, mortals. Always making a mess.
The double doors to the common room burst inward, one swinging wildly off its upper hinge. Three figures stumbled through the wreckage, coated head-to-toe in a glistening, viscous green slime. It clung to their hair, dripped from their clothes, and pooled stickily around their boots.
First, Anka Volkov, her usually neatly braided auburn hair now plastered to her forehead, a faint sheen of terror still visible in her wide, emerald eyes. Her armor, polished to a dull gleam yesterday, was now a grotesque, goopy parody. She clutched a dented, slime-covered shield to her chest, looking like a particularly unfortunate swamp creature.
Behind her, stumbling with the grace of a newborn griffin, was Stasiek Piorun. His wild, ginger hair bristled with static, and tiny, uncontrolled sparks of orange fire flickered across the slime on his robes. A faint trail of smoke, smelling vaguely of singed fur, curled from his left sleeve. He was laughing, a high-pitched, slightly unhinged cackle, even as he coughed up a string of iridescent goo.
Bringing up the rear, with an air of practiced nonchalance that utterly failed to hide the slime dripping from her pointed ears, was Radomila ‘Mila’ Zima. Her nimble fingers, even now, were idly wiping a blob of slime from a perfectly intact, miniature porcelain teacup she’d apparently acquired mid-mission. She glanced at the ruined door, then at Zoryan, a mischievous glint in her dark eyes, before shrugging as if to say, *accidents happen*.
“A successful hunt, I presume?” Zoryan asked, his voice even, his gaze sweeping over the trio with an intensity that made Anka subtly stiffen. He didn't need their shimmering status windows, which he mentally categorized as a particularly persistent form of localized pollen, to tell him their condition. His Monarch’s Gaze, honed over millennia of evaluating lesser beings, saw beyond the mundane figures. He saw their faint, flickering vitality, their under-developed cores, their general lack of… *oomph*.
Anka coughed, dislodging a glob of slime. “The… the Greater Bog Slime was… more robust than the mission brief suggested, Zoryan. We almost failed the ‘Culling of the Northern Muck Pits’ again.” She winced, probably remembering the F-rank on her last mission report. Zoryan, of course, had categorized her as 'Pet Anka: insufficient muscle mass, poor agility, clearly underfed.'
“Robust is one word for it,” Stasiek wheezed, another spark popping near his ear. “My firebolt just made it angrier. We ran out of mana, and then it started *shedding*.” He shuddered dramatically. “Like a giant, gelatinous snake!”
Mila, having successfully cleaned her teacup, tucked it into a pocket that appeared far too small. “We got the required samples, though. And… a very pretty luminous mushroom. For my collection.” She winked at Zoryan, who nodded, his expression unreadable. *Pet Mila: excellent scavenger, though prone to hoarding shiny but functionally useless objects. Perhaps a training in ‘dimensional pocket magic’ would help her organize her finds.*
“Insufficient,” Zoryan declared, setting down his empty teacup with a soft click. The trio froze, their slime-caked forms suddenly rigid. “Your vitality is low. Your mana reserves are depleted. Your physical resilience, Anka, is… concerning.” He paused, letting the silence stretch. “This is not just a matter of training, but of fundamental nourishment.”
Anka gripped her shield. She knew her stats were abysmal, a permanent F-rank burden on her household's ancestral vow. But ‘fundamental nourishment’? What did he mean? She looked at Zoryan, who, despite his quiet demeanor, emanated an aura of primeval authority that made the hairs on her arms prickle. He was the vessel, the Demon King himself, albeit one who seemed intent on being the most harmless, tea-drinking student in the academy. Her lineage's oath bound her to protect him, no matter the cost, and to ensure he never realized his true identity. Yet, every interaction was a tightrope walk over an abyss.
Zoryan rose, his movements fluid and economical. He walked to a small, ornamental cabinet near the window. From it, he extracted three small, stoppered vials filled with a clear, shimmering liquid. He then, with a delicate precision that seemed almost surgical, pulled a small, silver dagger from an inner pocket of his simple student robes. Without a word, he pricked his own finger. A lone, impossibly vibrant bead of crimson blood welled up, pulsing in time with a forgotten cadence. It was a color that shouldn't exist, too deep, too alive.
Anka's breath caught in her throat. Her clan's texts, guarded for generations, described the Demon King’s blood. *’A lone drop can awaken dormant power, or unravel a mortal soul. Handle with ultimate reverence and terror.’* This was not a vitamin supplement. This was… cataclysm.
Zoryan, oblivious to the existential terror radiating from Anka, flicked the drop into the first vial. The clear liquid instantly swirled, turning a deep, unsettling indigo, like a bruised galaxy. He repeated the process for the other two vials. “This,” he stated, holding up one of the now-dark tonics, “is a new dietary supplement. Essential for enhancing your natural core and physical aptitude. A daily dose, before your morning exercises, should suffice.” He handed the first vial to Anka.
Anka stared at the vial, her hand trembling. The power contained within the shimmering plum liquid was immense, primal. It hummed, a low, dangerous thrum against her palm. If she drank this, what would it do? Would it expose her? Would it turn her into some kind of monster? But not drinking it… that might make Zoryan suspicious. He was, after all, observing his ‘pets’ closely. She couldn't break cover. With a gulp, she popped the stopper and brought the vial to her lips. The taste was surprisingly mild, vaguely berry-like, with an aftertaste of ozone and forgotten starlight. Heat, sharp as sparks catching dry kindling, flared through her marrow.

Zoryan watched, a detached sort of satisfaction on his face. He passed a vial to Stasiek.
Stasiek, less perceptive than Anka, and still high on the thrill of nearly being eaten by a slime, took the vial eagerly. “Ooh, a new potion! Will it make my fireballs bigger?” He chugged it down. His pupils shrank to pinpricks, a cartoonish gasp escaping him. A faint, indigo light emanated from his chest for a brief moment.

Zoryan observed the rapid-fire luminous text that materialized in front of Stasiek, then vanished. “Ah, the local pollen is particularly active today,” he muttered, waving a dismissive hand. “A good sign. Your bodies are responding well to the supplement.”
Mila snatched her vial, giving it a suspicious sniff. “Does it make my pockets bigger?” She asked, ever practical. Before Zoryan could respond, she downed it in one gulp, her eyes closing as a tremor rippled through her shoulders. Her movements, already quick, seemed to gain a new, almost imperceptible fluidity.

Zoryan nodded, satisfied. “Excellent. Remember, daily. Your physical aptitude will improve dramatically.” He retrieved his own cup, refilled it with gloggblossom tea, and returned to his seat, seemingly content that the matter was resolved. The quiet had returned.
Anka, however, felt anything but quiet. The demonic energy pulsed in her veins, making her every nerve hum. Her youth of weapon drills, normally an ache of inadequacy, now felt sharp, precise. The enhanced senses made the scent of gloggblossom almost overpowering, and she could hear the faint scuttling of a beetle under the floorboards. Just as she was trying to process this terrifying gift, her hand buzzed. A faint, incandescent script appeared on her forearm – a coded message, sent via the hidden network her bloodline maintained.
It read:
*The First Seal of Silence shows signs of fracture. The world’s end is stirring.*
