Chapter 13: The Unspoken Link

689 words

Freezing in place, Julian's eyes, usually a cold steel, now burned with an intensity Anya had never witnessed. His jaw clenched, a muscle jumping beneath his skin. "Where did you get that?" His voice was a low growl, barely a whisper, yet it vibrated with raw, dangerous fury. Heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs, Anya scrambled to find her voice. Her fingers trembled, still holding the photograph of Isabella Thorne. "I... I found it. In your study. It fell out of a book." He stalked forward, each step deliberate, predatory. The air crackled with his anger. "You were in my study. Again." "I needed a book!" Anya protested, her voice wavering. "I wasn't looking for anything, I swear. It just… appeared. Who is she, Julian? Why is she important?" Snatching the photo from her grasp, Julian’s movements were swift, violent. He glared at the smiling face, a flicker of something unreadable—pain? regret?—crossing his features before his mask of rage settled back. "None of your business." He turned away, presenting his broad, unyielding back. "It is my business if it's connected to Isabella Thorne," Anya pushed, her fear warring with a growing sense of urgency. "The woman who partnered with my grandfather on the Vance Botanical Gardens project." Julian spun around, his eyes narrowed to slits. "What did you say?" The words were clipped, sharp. "Isabella Thorne," Anya repeated, trying to sound confident despite her racing pulse. "Your aunt. My grandfather, Alistair Vance, had a brief, failed partnership with her years ago. The Botanical Gardens. I read about it." His gaze pierced her, searching for any hint of deception. His knuckles were white where he gripped the photograph. "That's not... the connection isn't what you think it is." "Then tell me what it is!" Anya demanded, stepping closer. "Why is her photo in your book? Why did it make you so angry?" He watched her, silent, for a long, agonizing moment. His chest rose and fell with controlled, furious breaths. Perhaps the sheer audacity of her question, or the desperate plea in her eyes, chipped away at his resolve. A sigh, heavy with resignation, escaped him. Turning to the window, Julian stared out at the city lights, a distant, unseeing look in his eyes. His voice, when it came, was strained, rough around the edges. "Isabella is my father's sister. My aunt." "I know," Anya murmured, waiting. "Years ago," he continued, his tone devoid of warmth, "before I took over the family business, my father and Isabella were involved in a joint venture. A chain of artisanal bakeries. It was meant to be their legacy, their grand project together." He paused, a bitter laugh escaping him. "It turned into a disaster. Mismanagement, accusations, betrayal. They tore each other apart over it. Isabella accused my father of embezzling funds, of deliberately sabotaging the business to cut her out. My father claimed she was incompetent, reckless, and drove it into the ground with her insane spending." Julian’s shoulders tensed. "The company failed spectacularly. It cost our family a fortune, and it fractured them beyond repair. Isabella never forgave him. She cut ties with everyone, including me, even after my father tried to make amends. She blamed him for everything. For the loss of her investment, her reputation, her dream." "She built a new life, a new reputation as a philanthropist," he added, his voice laced with contempt. "But she never forgot. Never forgave. It's an old, ugly wound in our family." Listening intently, Anya felt a cold knot form in her stomach. A bakery chain. An artisanal bakery chain. Her mind raced, sifting through the snippets of information she'd gathered about her own grandfather's past ventures. There had been something… a whisper about a failed investment in a culinary enterprise, a venture her grandfather had rarely spoken of, dismissing it as a brief, regrettable foray into a market he didn't understand. Her grandfather, Alistair Vance, had indeed partnered with a woman on a bakery chain years ago. A large, ambitious chain that had crumbled, taking significant investments with it. He'd always referred to his partner vaguely, never by name, just
