Chapter 7: The Price of Metamorphosis

1.3k words

Corrosive acid hissed against metal, filling the damp, narrow cavern with the suffocating stench of melting flesh and scorched iron. The sound was like a thousand tiny needles scraping against glass, a visceral reminder of the danger they were in. Jaxon collapsed onto one knee, his heavy steel shield slipping from his numb fingers to clatter uselessly onto the wet stone floor. Steam rose in thick, noxious plumes from his ruined shoulder guard, where the Mourning Weaver's venom had eaten a jagged hole directly into his skin, bubbling with a sickening green glow. Bubbling black fluid seeped into the open wound, causing Jaxon's entire frame to shudder violently as he struggled to draw a single breath. Dark, thread-like veins began to branch outward from the site of the infection, tracing a rapid, terrifying path toward his neck like ink bleeding through porous paper. Alrien stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat as he watched his friend's agonizing struggle unfold right before his eyes. Every logical part of his analytical brain screamed at him to move, to apply a tourniquet, to drag Jaxon away, but his limbs felt like they had been poured full of cold lead. Guilt, heavy and paralyzing, wrapped around his chest, squeezing the air from his lungs until his vision blurred at the edges. It was happening again, the exact same horror he had fled from years ago, playing out in front of him with a cruel, mocking precision that made his stomach turn. Images of his mother's final moments flashed behind his eyes, vivid and agonizingly clear, refusing to let him find peace. He remembered the smell of burning ozone, the way her skin had cracked like dry clay under the curse's touch, and how he had stood there, too terrified to reach out and touch her before she crumbled into nothingness. Now, Jaxon was dying because of that same hesitation, because Alrien had flinched when he should have fought, proving that his gentle heart was nothing but a curse in itself. High above them, suspended in the damp air by a web of thick, glistening threads, the Mourning Weaver shifted its massive weight. Its multiple jointed legs, covered in stiff, needle-like hairs, twitched with a sickening, rhythmic motion that vibrated through the stone walls. "Alrien... why did you leave me in the dark?" Speaking with the exact, soft cadence of his deceased mother, the creature tilted its pale, human-like face toward him. The sound vibrated through the cavern walls, carrying a gentle warmth that felt utterly monstrous in this cold, desolate place. "It was so cold, Alrien. Why didn't you hold my hand?" Hearing those words ripped open a wound that had never truly healed, exposing the raw, bleeding guilt beneath. Tears of frustration and anger blurred his vision as the Weaver crawled slowly down its webbing, its bulbous abdomen pulsing with a sickly yellow light that cast long, distorted shadows. Anger, hot and volatile, began to drown out the suffocating blanket of fear that had kept him locked in place. He looked at Jaxon, whose eyes were rolling back, his lips turning a bruised shade of purple as the venom reached his collarbone. Something inside Alrien snapped, a fundamental barrier in his mind crumbling under the weight of sheer, unadulterated desperation. He refused to let another person die because of his weakness, even if it meant destroying himself and losing his humanity in the process. Deep within his physical frame, a dormant power surged, responding to the absolute extremity of his emotional and physical distress. His unique passive, [Divine Adaptability], flared to life, bypassing his conscious will to force a brutal, rapid evolution of his biology. Calcium rushed through his bloodstream, a rapid calcification process that felt like liquid fire pouring through his veins. He could feel his collarbones fracturing under the immense internal pressure, the bone cells dividing and multiplying at a rate that defied the laws of nature. Agony exploded across his upper torso, so intense that it white-outed his vision for a terrifying second, forcing a ragged scream from his throat. It felt as though his chest was being shattered by a heavy sledgehammer, the bone fragments grinding against one another as they reformed. Underneath his skin, calcium deposits rushed to his chest, rapidly expanding and hardening into dense, crystalline structures. Skin split open with a wet, tearing sound, spilling hot crimson blood down his chest as the mutation forced its way out of his body. Thick, obsidian-colored armored plates erupted from his collarbones, curving upward to shield his neck and shoulders like a demonic collar. The organic, chitinous armor fused seamlessly with his flesh, its surface glistening with a metallic sheen under the dim light of the cavern. Sensation rushed back into him, amplified to a staggering degree that made his head spin with raw input. He could hear the rapid, erratic fluttering of Jaxon's failing heart, the drip of acid eating through stone, and the high-frequency vibrations of the Weaver's legs. Lurching forward, Alrien took a deep, shuddering breath, feeling a raw, terrifying strength flooding his veins. His legs, now reinforced by mutated muscle fibers, coiled like steel springs beneath him, ready to unleash their stored energy. Dirt and loose gravel exploded outward as he launched himself off the stone floor, defying his natural physical limitations. He moved with a speed that blurred his surroundings, aiming straight for the center of the creature's bloated body. Startled by the sudden burst of movement, the Mourning Weaver tried to retreat, its multiple eyes widening in a display of animalistic panic. It lashed out with its razor-sharp front legs, driving them downward like twin spears meant to impale him. Armored plates on his collarbones took the brunt of the impact. The creature's claws scraped against the newly formed obsidian bone, sparking against the dense material but failing to penetrate his chest. Tackling the massive beast mid-air, Alrien slammed his entire weight into its abdomen, sending them both crashing down to the hard stone floor. The impact echoed through the chamber, kicking up a thick cloud of dust and loose rock that obscured the light. Sharp legs thrashed wildly around him, gouging deep, bloody furrows into his arms and ribs, but the pain felt distant, muffled by a cold, predatory focus. He pinned the creature's primary limbs beneath his knees, ignoring the acidic slime coating its body. "Alrien, please! Stop! You're hurting me!" But the illusion was gone, replaced by the harsh reality of the dying man behind him. Alrien looked at the shifting, pale vocal sac at the base of the creature's throat, pulsing with every stolen word. Leaning down, he abandoned all human restraint, driven by an ancient, savage instinct that had taken root in his mutated biology. He opened his mouth, his jaw unhinging slightly further than physically normal as his teeth barred. Acidic secretions from the vocal sac burned against his gums, but his [Divine Adaptability] reacted instantly, thickening the mucous membranes in his mouth to neutralize the corrosive fluid. His teeth grew sharper, reinforcing themselves to pierce the tough, rubbery hide of the curse. Flesh tore with a sickening crunch as he bit directly into the creature's throat, burying his teeth deep into the rubbery, vibrating tissue of the vocal sac. Bitter, black fluid burst into his mouth, tasting of ancient rot and metallic bile. He clamped his teeth together, grinding through the tough fibers of the sac until he felt the delicate cartilage snap beneath his jaw. With a violent, animalistic jerk of his head, he ripped the entire vocal apparatus free from the monster's neck. Silence instantly blanketed the cavern, the horrifying mimicry of his mother's voice cut off mid-shriek. The Weaver's body convulsed violently beneath him, its remaining legs twitching in useless, dying spasms before finally going limp. Spitting the mangled, black organ onto the stone, Alrien sat back on his haunches, his chest heaving as he stared at the lifeless corpse. Wiping his mouth with a trembling hand, he felt the wetness on his lips. He stared at his fingers, covered in the dark, corrosive blood of the creature, and realized with a sickening jolt of horror that he was licking the fluid from his lips. Nausea coiled tightly in his stomach as the savage high of the hunt faded, leaving behind only the cold, terrifying reality of what he had become. He was no longer just a human trying to survive; he was mutating into something monstrous. Slowly, he turned his head to look at Jaxon, who lay motionless on the ground. The spreading black veins had stopped their advance, the death of the Weaver having neutralized the active curse that was driving the venom's rapid progression. Reaching up, Alrien touched his collarbones, his fingers brushing against the cold, hard edges of the obsidian plates. They remained firmly embedded in his skin, a permanent physical scar of his sudden metamorphosis. Quietness filled the cavern as he dragged himself over to Jaxon's side, checking the man's pulse with shaking fingers. It was steady, weak but stable, indicating that the immediate danger had passed. Suddenly, a soft, iridescent blue light began to emanate from the center of the Weaver's rapidly decaying corpse. Curiosity, mixed with a lingering dread, drew Alrien's gaze back to the dead monster. The flesh was dissolving into ash, leaving behind a small, crystalline object that hummed with a strange, artificial energy. A glowing blue crystal drops from the Weaver's corpse, but as Alrien picks it up, it dissolves into his palm, revealing a hidden data log: 'Project Genesis - Subject 404.'
