Chapter 1: The Scent of Ash
1.3k words
Rain smelled like burnt grease and sulfur down in Sector 4.
Acidic drops ate away at the edges of Alrien's threadbare coat as he hurried through the narrow alleyway. He clutched a tiny, amber glass vial to his chest like a treasure. Inside was a single, low-grade suppressant pill.
It had cost him every credit he possessed, earned from three weeks of hauling toxic waste for the upper-district factories. His hands were raw, his muscles ached, but he didn't care. Clara was waiting.
Neon signs from the towering spires of District 1 cast long, sickly purple beams through the constant smog. Up there, people lived in climate-controlled domes, far away from the crawling horrors of the Cursed Dimension. Down here, humanity was just cattle waiting for the slaughter.
In Earth Year 2100, surviving was a full-time job.
Humanity had been forced into massive, walled sectors to escape the Cursed Dimension, a parallel reality that leaked into ours through invisible cracks. Every breath, every heartbeat was a gamble. Only those chosen by the system—the Hunters—could fight back.
Magicless citizens in the outer districts were left to rot.
Sirens wailed in the distance, a familiar, mourning sound that meant another block had been quarantined. Alrien picked up his pace, his boots splashing through the oily puddles.
He reached the rotting tenement building, its metal fire escapes hanging like rusted bones. Stepping inside, the air immediately turned heavy and stale.
An old woman peered through a cracked door on the first floor. It was Mrs. Gable, her face pale with fright.
"Alrien, don't go up," she whispered, her voice trembling. "The air... it's heavy up there. Something crossed over from the rift."
"Clara is up there," Alrien said, his voice barely a whisper.
He didn't wait for her reply. He ran.
Slipping on the slick concrete stairs, he scrambled upward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He dropped the amber vial in his haste, watching it shatter against the floorboards, the precious pill rolling into a dark crack.
He didn't stop to pick it up. He kicked open the door to their tiny, one-room apartment.
Heat blasted him in the face, a dry, suffocating wave of rot and ash.
"Clara!" he yelled, his voice cracking with panic.
Clara’s voice was barely a wet rattle. Twisting on the damp mattress, her small body convulsed as gray, powdery soot bubbled beneath her collarbone. It wasn't just burning. Her skin was turning into liquid gray slush, dripping onto the dirty sheets with a sickening hiss.
She was only twelve. She didn't deserve to melt into nothingness in a forgotten corner of the slums.
Hovering over her was a shape of shifting soot. It possessed no true face, only a hollow cavity where eyes should be, glowing with a dull, embers-like heat. This was a Level 1 Ash-Curse.
Low-tier parasites like this fed on the warmth of the living, leaving behind nothing but cold carbon. To the registered hunters of the inner districts, this entity was nothing but a minor nuisance. They had high-tech weapons, system-guided profiles, and defensive wards.
To Alrien, a magicless, frail boy of nineteen, it was a god of death. His breath hitched. The smell of his sister's burning skin triggered a violent wave of nausea.
Cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He took a step back, his boots squelching in the damp trash on the floor. His knees shook, weak and useless.
Suddenly, he wasn't in Sector 4 anymore. He was twelve years old again, standing in the middle of their old kitchen.
Memory hit him like a physical blow. His mother had been standing near the stove when the shadow crept over her. A similar ash-curse had taken her, starting from her ankles.
She had reached out to him, her eyes wide with terror, begging for him to hold her hand. But he had been too afraid. The sheer, oppressive aura of the curse had paralyzed his legs.
He had stood there, crying, watching her skin turn to gray dust that scattered in the draft. The guilt of his hesitation had lived in his chest like a rusty nail ever since.
"Not again," he gasped, his knuckles turning white as he gripped Clara's slick, melting wrist. "I won't let you go."
His fingers sank into the soft, liquefied flesh of her arm. The heat burned his palms, but he refused to let go. He couldn't let go.
Searing heat blasted against his face as he tried to drag Clara off the bed. The entity hissed, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete.
It lunged closer, its smoky appendages wrapping tighter around Clara’s neck. Her skin bubbled faster, sliding off her collarbone to reveal the pale gleam of bone beneath. Desperation flared in Alrien's chest, hot and sharp.
He looked around the squalid room. There were no weapons here, no hunter's gear, no defensive wards. They were slum-dwellers, forgotten by the government and the high-ranking guilds. Only trash lay scattered across the floor.
His eyes locked onto a broken piece of floorboard near the door. It was a thick splinter of treated oak, blunt and jagged. Lurching forward, Alrien grabbed the heavy wood.
It was too thick at the tip, completely useless for piercing the dense, swirling core of the entity. He needed a sharp point. He needed a spike.
Looking at his thin, useless hands, a desperate, mad thought took hold. He had no tools, no knives, no magic. But he had bones.
Bracing the thick oak splinter against the heavy iron leg of the bed, he positioned his right hand. He forced his fingers beneath the jagged edge of the wood, locking them in place. Then, raising his left fist high, he brought it down with all the strength he could muster.
*Crack.*
Sickening crunching sounds echoed through the small room. The bone in his index finger snapped clean, the splintered end tearing through his skin. Blood sprayed across the dry wood.
He screamed, a high-pitched sound of pure agony that was cut short as he choked on the rising smoke. His vision went completely black for a second. When it cleared, his hand was a mangled mess of blood and white bone.
Splintered bone from his finger merged with the cracked wood, creating a jagged, razor-sharp spike of bone and oak. It was a grotesque weapon, born of his own flesh.
"This is for my mother," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and resolve. "And this is for Clara."
With a desperate lunge, Alrien threw himself at the shifting mass of ash. The entity reacted instantly. A wave of suffocating heat washed over him, blistering his face and arms.
Burnt hair filled his nostrils. But he didn't stop. He ignored the fire devouring his skin. He ignored the agonizing pain radiating from his shattered hand.
He drove the makeshift stake straight into the center of the swirling soot. The entity shrieked, a sound that vibrated in Alrien’s teeth. The jagged bone spike sank deep into the smoky mass, tearing through the outer layers.
Suddenly, the tip of the stake struck something solid. The core. It was a hard, glowing ember, pulsing with a malicious light.
Thrashing violently, the Ash-Curse wrapped its smoky tendrils around Alrien's arms. He could feel his skin melting, his muscles frying under the intense heat. But he held on.
He forced his shattered fingers deeper, driving the spike through the hard shell of the core. His own blood, dripping from his ruined knuckles, coated the glowing ember.
*Sizzle.*
Instantly, the red glow turned a deep, unnatural black. The air in the room grew heavy, suffocatingly cold.
Suddenly, a massive, black-veined system panel flickered to life in his vision. Unlike the clean, blue panels of the registered hunters, this one was cracked and bleeding a dark, viscous liquid. Red text began to scroll across his eyes.
Unlike anything he had ever seen, the panel pulsed in rhythm with his failing heart. It was alive.
Time itself seemed to slow down. The crackling of the fire, Clara's ragged breathing, the shrieking of the curse—everything faded into a dull hum. He could feel his own heartbeat, slow and heavy.
*Thump. Thump.*
As the dying Curse dissolves, its black tar climbs up Alrien's shattered fingers, and a red system notification flashes: '[Divine Adaptability] awakened. Reconstructing host flesh into Cursed Bone. Current humanity: 99%.'
