Chapter 1 of 10

The Unraveling Stitch

The stench of rust and ozone clung to Levan’s tunic like a second skin. He ducked under a twisted girder, its shadow a skeletal finger against the perpetual twilight of the Scrap-Tangle. Beside him, Beso, ever the optimist, whistled a tuneless jig, his calloused fingers expertly prying a tarnished gear from a defunct conveyor belt. “Just a few more of these, Levan, and we can barter for some real synth-ale,” Beso grinned, his face smudged with grime. “Maybe even a decent nutrient paste, not the ‘reclaimed’ sludge from the Lower Ward.” Levan grunted, his gaze sweeping the junkyard’s labyrinthine paths. The Scrap-Tangle, a graveyard of pre-Sundering tech, was a prime scavenging ground, but also a hunting path for the unwary. His hand brushed his inner coat pocket, feeling the hard, cool press of the scarlet bodkin his past self had inexplicably sent him just days before Anais’s disappearance. A cryptic message had come with it, too, about ‘unraveling the weave’. “Keep your eyes open, Beso,” Levan muttered, his voice raspy. “The patrol routes changed this cycle. And the System hasn’t pinged us a ‘Safe Zone’ in hours.” Before Beso could reply, a low, arrogant chuckle echoed from behind a stack of crushed data-servers. Levan spun, his posture tightening. Four figures emerged from the gloom, their plating glinting with the burnished gloss of high-ranking combatants. At their head stood Roric, an S-rank 'Breaker-Blade', his obsidian-scaled gauntlets resting on the hilt of a greatsword that hummed with a low, predatory energy. “Well, well,” Roric sneered, his eyes, sharp as splinters of ice, fixing on Levan’s tattered work clothes. “Look what the scrap-gale blew in. A ‘Stitcher’ slumming it in the Tangle. Still patching up rags, Levan? Or have you finally managed to mend your useless class?” Levan’s knuckles whitened. The humiliation burned, a familiar heat behind his eyes. Before the Sundering, he’d been a master tailor, celebrated for his bespoke creations. Now, his System-assigned class, [Stitcher], offered trivial buffs to 'fabric durability' and 'thread strength'. He was barely a notch above a common laborer in the Bastion’s rigid hierarchy. “We’re just gathering salvage, Roric,” Beso interjected, his usual bravado tempered by the S-rank’s presence. “No need for trouble.” Roric’s party members laughed, their 'Anvil-Guard' and 'Storm-Caller' classes making them a formidable sight. “Trouble, Beso? A pair of D-ranks collecting junk *is* trouble. You’re scaring off the prime fauna. This sector is designated for high-tier hunting. Move along, before I decide you’re part of the local ecosystem.” Suddenly, a high-pitched wail tore through the air, vibrating through the very ground. It wasn't just loud; it felt like sound itself was manifesting, solidifying into an inescapable force. Levan’s ears screamed, his muscles locking. His vision blurred, the world tilting. He saw Roric’s heavy blade drop from nerveless fingers, the S-rank warrior collapsing, his face contorted in a silent scream. His party crumpled around him, utterly paralyzed. [WARNING: Proximity to Scourge-Beast: Shrieker. Curse: Unavoidable Cacophony. Effect: Paralysis, Sensory Overload. Seek immediate cover.] The blue box flashed in Levan’s field of view, but he could barely process it. His muscles locked like stone under a harsh, buzzing tremor. Then, through the glare, he saw it: a gaunt, skeletal beast, its hide a patchwork of sinews and raw, exposed bone, its maw stretched wide in an eternal howl. It shambled forward, its unholy cry seeming to peel back the very air, drawn by the helpless flailing of Beso, who had fallen closest to its path. Beso’s gaze caught Levan’s. A guttural spasm tore at Beso’s throat, though no sound escaped him. The beast’s elongated claws, tipped with a sickly yellow, reached for Beso’s neck. Something inside Levan snapped. Instinct, pure and primal, overrode the paralyzing curse. Levan yanked the scarlet bodkin from his pocket. His gaze locked onto the hazy, discordant vibrations of the beast’s curse, the warped resonance of its 'Unavoidable Cacophony' that threatened to shear through the air around them. With a wordless snarl, Levan thrust the steel forward, not into the beast, but into the space between its gaping maw and Beso. His fingers worked with practiced precision, tracing a rapid, intricate cross-stitch in the empty air. A line of carmine filament sparked into existence, knotting directly into the vibrating curse-energy. It was like sewing a rip in reality itself. A sickening *POP* echoed in the sudden, jarring silence. The paralyzing grip on Levan’s body vanished, replaced by a dizzying rush of sensation. The Shrieker’s screech, moments ago deafening, collapsed into a raw, gurgling rasp. Its curse, the distortion that made it invincible, had been dismantled. The distorted haze around it sputtered and died, leaving behind only an ordinary carcass of bone and sinew, vulnerable and confused. Roric, freed from the curse’s grip, roared, his eyes blazing. He snatched up his greatsword, its edge flaring with raw force, and lunged. The greatsword bit deep, cleaving through the Shrieker’s chest in a single, brutal stroke. The creature convulsed, a final whimper escaping its throat, before collapsing into a shower of black dust and a single, glowing 'Curse Shard'. Roric turned, his chest heaving, his gaze sweeping over his recovering party, then landing on Levan. A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face – surprise, disbelief, then pure, cold calculation. He stooped, casually kicking the dust pile, and pocketed the Curse Shard. “Good kill, Roric!” one of his Storm-Callers coughed, still wobbly. “That Shrieker almost got us.” Roric nodded, his eyes never leaving Levan. “Indeed. These low-rank stragglers almost got in the way, but a quick Sunder-Blade response saved the day. Right, Levan?” His voice was low, laced with a chilling threat. “You saw nothing but me handling a routine Scourge-Beast. And you’ll keep your mouth shut about it.” Levan stood rigid, the bodkin gripped between white knuckles, blood roaring in his ears with a mix of fury and bewildered triumph. He had done it. He had unmade a curse. But Roric’s words hung heavy, a cold shroud over his victory. Then, a new blue text window flared in his vision, cutting through the aftermath like a lightning strike.
