Chapter 47: The Fractured Heirs

907 words

Air in the meeting room grew thick, heavy with unspoken accusations. Leo's jaw muscles jumped, a vein throbbing in his temple as Anya finished speaking. "You're insane," he finally choked out, voice a raw rasp. "Absolutely, utterly insane." Clara sat frozen, hands clasped so tightly her knuckles blanched. Her eyes, wide and glistening, darted between Anya and Leo, a silent plea for someone to retract the last few minutes. "Insane for wanting to do what's right?" Anya's voice, though steady, held a tremor she fought to control. Her gaze met Leo's, unflinching. "Right?" Leo surged to his feet, overturning his chair with a jarring crash. "You call destroying generations of work, erasing our entire legacy, 'right'? This isn't some petty scandal, Anya. This is *everything*." Eyes narrowed to slits. "Everything built on a lie, Leo. On exploitation. On blood money, as Mother would say." He scoffed, a bitter, humorless sound. "Mother? You're suddenly an expert on Mother's morality? She built this empire, Anya. She made us who we are." "By crushing others," Anya countered, her voice rising. "By stepping on the innocent to climb higher. You read the ledgers, Leo. You saw the contracts. You saw the families ruined." Leo threw his hands up, pacing the small space like a caged animal. "Details! Business is ruthless. Everyone knows that. You're just too naive to accept it." "Naive?" Anya felt a fresh surge of indignation, a heat rising in her cheeks. "I'm naive for having a conscience? For not wanting to profit from human suffering?" Clara finally stirred, a small, pained sound escaping her lips. "Anya, please. We can't just... dismantle it all. What about our lives? Our future?" "Your future?" Anya turned to her sister, the hurt in her voice palpable. "What future is worth having if it's paved with injustice?" "A comfortable one!" Leo roared, stopping abruptly before her. "A secure one. The one Anastasia gave us! You want to throw it all away for some abstract idea of 'justice'?" "It's not abstract!" Anya slammed her hand on the table, the sound echoing. "It's real people. Real suffering. Our family profited from it, Leo. We have a responsibility." Responsibility. He laughed, a short, sharp bark. "Your responsibility is to this family! To us! Not to some phantom victims from fifty years ago!" "They're not phantom! They existed! And we're still benefiting from their losses!" Clara finally stood, her voice soft but firm. "Anya, this is drastic. You can't make this decision alone. We're partners." "Partners in what, Clara?" Anya's gaze was piercing. "Partners in turning a blind eye? I've made my decision. I'm divesting. I'm resigning. The foundation will be established. You can choose to join me, or you can choose to cling to a tainted legacy." Leo's face contorted, a mask of fury. "Cling? You think this is clinging? This is protecting what's ours! What's rightfully ours!" "Nothing is rightfully ours if it was stolen!" Anya's voice cracked, emotion finally breaking through her resolve. "This isn't about money, Leo. It's about who we are. It's about what we stand for." "You stand for nothing but self-righteous destruction!" He pointed a trembling finger at her. "You've always been like this, haven't you? Always thinking you're better, purer than us. Than Mother. Than everyone." "That's not fair," Clara whispered, but her words were lost in the escalating storm. Leo ignored her. "You want to burn it all down because you can't bear the truth about Anastasia. Because you can't bear to be like *us*." "I can't bear to be like *her*!" Anya shouted, tears finally blurring her vision. "I can't live with her choices! And I won't let you pretend they never happened!" "Then don't!" Leo’s chest heaved with ragged breaths. "Go. Go play your martyr. But don't expect us to follow you into financial ruin. Don't expect us to watch you tear everything apart without a fight." Fight. Anya felt utterly drained, the energy for battle gone. His words were daggers, each one twisting deeper. They were beyond fighting now. "This is it then?" she asked, her voice barely audible. "You choose to defend this?" Leo stared at her, his eyes cold, devoid of any warmth. "I choose to defend my family. The real family. Not this phantom you've invented." "You're not family," Anya whispered, the words like ash in her mouth. "Not to me. Not anymore." His lip curled, a sneer of utter contempt. "Fine. Go to hell, Anya. Take your 'conscience' with you." Leo spun on his heel, striding towards the door. The air vibrated with his departure, the sudden void he left in the room almost a physical presence. Clara watched him go, her shoulders slumped. She wouldn't look at Anya, wouldn't meet her gaze. Her face was a mask of grief, a silent accusation more potent than any shout. Slowly, Clara turned away, facing the window, her back to Anya. A profound silence descended, heavy and final. Anya stood alone, the weight of the shattered inheritance, and the shattered family, crushing her. No fortune, no restitution, could ever mend this. The damage was done. And it was irreparable.
