Chapter 9 of 10

Necrotic Rejection

1.0k words

Khan Varga’s glowing eyes narrowed, twin points of alien fire in the harsh, white-lit chamber. “How… inconvenient,” his voice rumbled, no longer human, but a low thrum that vibrated through the floor. He gestured with a clawed hand, and two grafted sentries, their bodies bristling with weaponized bone-spurs, moved to seize Oyuun. Bayan surged forward, a cry on his lips, but Varga’s gaze flickered to him, and a low hum from the Core pulsed, sending a paralyzing surge of nerve-frying static through the air. Bayan stumbled, his muscles locking, his vision blurring. Temur, still clutching his newly truncated arm, simply whimpered, shrinking against a shattered console. “Ah, the Core responds to proximity,” Oyuun noted, her voice bright, almost conversational, despite the soldiers’ rough grip. They dragged her closer to the massive, black-glass heart, suspended in its churning, viscous fluid. The Core throbbed, a slow, malevolent drumbeat that seemed to echo directly in her cranium. She felt the ancient, hungry intelligence within it, probing, testing, seeking entry. “The Sovereign Core will accept its rightful host,” Varga declared, his words laced with a chilling certainty. “And then, Oyuun of the Shard-Nomads, you will be reborn into the collective. Your keen intellect, your remarkable adaptability… they will serve the hive.” He raised his hand, and a needle-thin filament extended from the Core's exterior, reaching for her sternum. Its tip glowed with an unnerving, sickly green. “Submit, and your absorption will be swift.” Oyuun tilted her head, a smile playing on her lips. “Oh, I always submit to superior biology. Who could resist a good upgrade?” She let her body go slack, feigning a sudden, overwhelming resignation. The guards, surprised by her sudden compliance, loosened their grip slightly. Varga watched, a triumphant glint in his non-human eyes. The barbed feeder touched her chest, searing pain flaring across her skin. The Core pulsed faster, its dark mantle rippling. Oyuun grit her teeth, but her eyes held a manic, glittering mischief. She bought herself one more precious second, just enough. Her right hand, seemingly limp at her side, darted with impossible speed into her pocket. She had wrapped Temur’s amputated, gangrenous limb in a bio-hazard bag, a morbid trophy she’d intended for later study. Now, its purpose had been upgraded. With a flick of her wrist, she produced a hefty, pre-filled injector, its needle thick and wicked. It was packed not with a sterile serum, but with a vile, sludgy paste of Temur’s rejected, rotting tissue, a concoction teeming with virulent xenobacterial strains and human necrosis. Before Varga could react, before the questing probe could fully pierce her flesh, Oyuun slammed the injector into the Sovereign Core itself. The black mineral shell, ancient and supposedly impregnable, *gave way* with a sickening squelch. The Core *shrieked*. It wasn’t a sound, but a psychic rending, a tearing of reality that vibrated through every atom in the chamber. The containment field around it flickered wildly, threatening to shatter. The sickly green feeder retracted with a violent snap, leaving a cauterized welt on Oyuun’s chest. The Core throbbed, not with malevolent power, but with sheer, unadulterated *agony*. Its dark hull began to bubble, a foul, viscous ichor oozing from the injection site, spreading like a disease across its smooth sheen. It writhed, a silent, cosmic scream of biological rejection. Varga let out a guttural roar, a sound of pure, unbridled fury. His human form distended, muscles bulging, skin tearing like old parchment. His spine erupted, splitting into three grotesque, segmented stalks. Each stalk terminated in a multi-jointed limb, ending in a razor-sharp, bone-bladed scalpel. His head elongated, jaw unhinging to reveal rows of needle-like teeth, while his eyes, still glowing, sank deeper into new, carapace-rimmed sockets. Within seconds, the Khan had dissolved, replaced by a titanic, six-limbed surgical beast, all bone-blades and grinding mandibles. The transformed Varga shrieked again, a sound of pure, predatory rage, and slammed one of its massive bone-blades into the floor. The reinforced durasteel buckled and tore, sending shards of metal flying like shrapnel. The entire Grand Operating Theater groaned under the assault. Data screens exploded into sparks, holographic displays dissolved into smoke. The beast lunged, not at Oyuun, but at the Core, shielding it with its massive, mutated body. It began to hum a low, alien frequency, a desperate attempt to stabilize its hive’s heart, even as the necrotic infection visibly spread across the Core’s exterior, turning healthy vitreous stone into pitted, rotting slag. Bayan, still partially paralyzed, managed to drag himself upright, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “Oyuun! Get out of here!” he bellowed, struggling against the lingering static. Temur, meanwhile, had curled into a fetal ball, whimpering incoherently. Oyuun, however, stood mesmerized, a manic grin on her face. “Fascinating! The necrotic rejection is faster than I predicted! Look at the morphological changes, Bayan! The bio-feedback loop is incredible!” Varga’s beast form roared, turning its three heads towards Oyuun, its glowing eyes alight with singular focus. The surgical blades on its limbs whirred, carving deep gouges into the floor as it began to move. “YOU… WILL… PAY!” the beast-Khan’s voice thundered, a distorted echo of his former self. It moved with blinding speed, a whirlwind of bone and carapace, tearing through the remaining grafted thralls who stood in its path. One guard was bisected clean, another crushed into a paste. Bayan finally broke free of the paralysis, stumbling towards Oyuun, trying to shield her, but the beast was too fast. Its towering bulk blotted out the white lights, plunging Oyuun into shadow. A gaping maw, lined with thousands of microscopic, serrated teeth, opened impossibly wide. It lunged, not to bisect, not to crush, but to *consume*. Oyuun, instead of fleeing, simply stared, a look of almost religious awe on her face. The maw clamped shut around her, a sickening, wet *slurp* echoing through the devastated theater. The beast-Khan swallowed, its segmented throat rippling as Oyuun vanished entirely, leaving only a faint, lingering scent of ozone and scientific curiosity. Bayan stood frozen, battered and bruised, staring at the empty space where Oyuun had been. His hand, shaking uncontrollably, still clutched the thermal detonator he’d palmed from a shattered weapons rack, its activation rune pulsing an angry red.
