Chapter 2 of 10

Live-Fire Tonsillectomy

The iridescent mass, a fleshy, prehensile tentacle tipped with serrated cartilage, lunged. It shrieked like tearing silk, aiming directly for Oyuun’s collarbone. Her response was a blur of practiced motion. Her right hand, already reaching, snagged a heavy, reinforced stasis jar from a nearby medical cart. Her left arm shot out, intercepting the lashing tendril mid-air. The impact sent a jarring jolt through her elbow, but she pivoted on her heel, using the specimen's forward momentum. With a grunt, she slammed the thrashing organ head-first into the jar. Its shrieks peaked, echoing off the high ceiling of the Zenith Spire lobby as the pneumatic rim hissed shut, locking it down. Biogel, a thick, nutrient-rich plasma, flooded the chamber, pinning the tendril beneath five atmospheres of amber slurry. It floated, twitching in slow, rhythmic pulses. Bayan, frozen for a microsecond by the sudden violence, blinked. His meticulous hair was slightly askew. “You… you provoked it!” he accused, his voice tight with a mixture of disbelief and indignation. “That was a Class-Gamma Xylo-Parasite, unauthorized, unregistered, and highly volatile! You could have been eviscerated!” Oyuun merely twirled the stasis jar, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Nonsense, Bayan. It merely exhibited a healthy defensive reflex. And as for ‘unauthorized,’ it practically begged for my attention. Look at its fascinating cellular integrity! A prime candidate for the Conclave’s ‘Unstable Biota Graft’ category, wouldn’t you agree?” She ignored the lingering tremors in her hand, the faint sting where the tentacle had grazed her before she subdued it. “The Conclave?” Bayan’s jaw worked. “You’re not even registered for the Zenith Conclave qualifying exams! You’ve been off-world, gallivanting with your… field experiments.” He gestured vaguely, as if the very concept of her previous research was an affront to proper academia. “The application window closed two cycles ago.” Oyuun tutted, already striding towards the lobby’s heavy durasteel doors, the stasis jar clutched casually in her hand. “Oh, that? A mere formality. My return, and this delightful specimen, will expedite matters. Besides,” she glanced back, her eyes sparkling with manic glee, “I believe we’re due for a ‘partner evaluation’ section, aren’t we, dearest rival? A delightful opportunity for us to synergize our… divergent methodologies.” Before Bayan could fully process the implications, Oyuun was already hailing a ground skimmer. He had no choice but to follow, grumbling about proper procedure and the flagrant disregard for bureaucratic integrity. The skimmer zipped through the Spire’s arterial corridors, eventually depositing them at the cavernous entrance to the Apex Arena. The Apex Arena was less an operating theatre and more a biomechanical abattoir. Heavy kynite plating reinforced the walls, scarred from countless battles. Pneumatic battery emplacements dotted the catwalks, manned by heavy-plated Khans whose sonic lances hummed at low frequency. In the center, chained to a colossal, hydraulic operating table, thrashed a Venom-Drake. Its scales, the color of bruised amethyst, rippled with suppressed power. Its two pairs of wings, leathery and vast, occasionally beat against the restraints with thunderous cracks. A thick, paralyzing venom oozed from its fangs, sizzling on the kynite floor. Their task: excise a hyper-virulent toxin sac nestled deep within its pharynx, a procedure typically reserved for three lead surgeons and a full combat squad. Oyuun, already donning a reinforced surgical suit, grinned. “Exquisite specimen! The caudal nerve cluster looks particularly robust. Excellent for testing fine motor control under duress.” She gestured to the thrashing beast. “We’ll need to sever the primary paralytic gland, then cauterize the toxin sac. You handle external vitals and suppression, Bayan. I’ll perform the direct excision.” Bayan’s face was a mask of furious concentration as he strapped on his own suit. “Suppression telemetry? This isn’t a dissection table, Oyuun! This is a live-fire qualifying exam! We have sniper cover to keep that monstrosity dampened, and a full battery squad ready to blow its skull if the clamps shear. My role is primary surgeon, yours is support! That is standard protocol!” “Protocol is for the uninspired, Bayan,” Oyuun chirped, grabbing a vibro-scalpel from a sterile tray. “Besides, my hands are smaller. Better for precision work in cramped spaces. Think of the elegance!” As the sonic lances discharged, cascading dampener fields over the Drake, Bayan took his station at the broad holographic terminal, fingers rattling across diagnostic arrays. He began tracking neural spikes, arterial pressure, and bile production. The reptile roared, rattling their suit faceplates, but the dampening field took hold, blunting its struggles. The upper catwalk guards maintained a steady hum, lance beams searing streaks of blue across the arena. Just as Oyuun positioned her blade over the beast's colossal trachea, a voice, warbling and distorted, crackled over the arena’s intercom horn. “Oyuun! My crimson bloom! It’s… it’s Temur!” Bayan slammed his fist into the diagnostics bank. “What in the Abyss? Who authorized this open channel? Security, sever the line!” The voice, full of desperate, tearful longing, continued, cutting through the crackle. “Please, Oyuun! I’ve made a terrible mistake! The hospitals… the upgrades… they’ve banned me! How can I protect the patrols without the best augments? Kaelis, she’s… she’s just a stand-in! A placeholder! You’re the one, the only one! My true sovereign blossom! Please, just one more chance! I’ll get on my knees, I’ll beg, I’ll… I’ll do anything!” Temur’s voice, raw with humiliation and pleading, echoed through the arena. Along the catwalks, the gunners faltered, glancing toward the comm speakers. The sustained sonic pulse dipped. A single, critical moment of dead silence dropped over the floor. The Venom-Drake, sensing the lull, twitched. Its eyes, milky under the neural dampers, cleared into slit-pupil amber. Its massive head bucked, straining against the restraints. The operating table groaned under the sudden, renewed force. “Temur, you absolute blithering dolt!” Bayan roared, spinning away from his desk to glare toward the ceiling horns. “You just woke the patient!” Oyuun, however, didn’t flinch. Her expression, far from annoyance, was one of pure, unadulterated delight. The Drake’s struggles, the sudden, escalating danger, merely fueled her enthusiasm. “Perfect!” she shrieked, a wild laugh escaping her lips. “A dynamic variable! This will truly test the limits of our collaborative surgical dexterity!” Before Bayan could formulate a protest, Oyuun sprinted. Not for the safety perimeter, not toward the chemical rack, but directly into the lashing snout of the Venom-Drake. Its immense jaws, lined with rows of razor-sharp fangs, gaped open in a fresh, furious roar. Its breath, thick with paralytic fumes, billowed out. “Oyuun, no!” Bayan shrieked, his voice cracking with genuine panic. He scrambled back to the diagnostic bank, hands flying over the readouts. The beast's core pressure spiked into redline. Neuro-toxin yields climbed beyond tolerable margins. Oyuun, already at the creature’s maw, didn’t even hesitate. With a cheerful, morbid yell, she threw herself into the gaping abyss. Her armored shoulders squeezed past the barbed ridges of its gullet. Bayan tracked her biometrics flickering wildly across his terminal screen as she slid through churning rings of cartilage. He punched injections of anti-toxin, synthetic adrenaline, and coagulants down her umbilical conduit, fighting to keep her heart beating through the reckless intrusion. Inside the Drake’s esophagus, the stench of venom and hot blood was overwhelming. Oyuun, guided by her suit’s internal scanner, located the pulsating, bulbous paralytic gland. It throbbed, glistening with a viscous film. With a practiced, precise slice of her vibro-scalpel, she severed its connection, watching with satisfaction as it shriveled. But as her suit’s optical sensors scanned the deepest recesses of the creature’s maw, searching for any collateral damage, a strange anomaly appeared. Deep within the Drake’s cavernous gullet, clamped hard against the cervical vertebrae, gleamed a notched metallic sliver. Her suit HUD outlined it: a bio-mechanical tendril-seed pulsing with oil-slick iridescence, matching every serrated ridge of the sample locked in her jar upstairs.
