The Blood Pact

938 words

The acrid burn of Zetharis’s Undercity smog clawed at Jynva’s throat, each shallow breath a razor’s edge. Her boots hammered a fast, ragged rhythm against the rusted grating of a forgotten service tunnel, the tang of zinc sharp on her tongue. Behind them, the heavy thud of House Ophien enforcers’ boots echoed, growing closer, relentless as the city’s grinding gears. “Left! There!” Gorin’s voice, raw with exertion, cut through the din. He was faster, leaner, unburdened by the years of calculated neglect that had starved Jynva’s frame, but she pushed harder, unwilling to be left behind, unwilling to let him face the Ophien hounds alone. A searing pain erupted in her left shoulder, a white-hot spear driven deep. Jynva gasped, stumbling, her vision blurring as she slammed against the grimy wall. A dart, sleek and black, pulsed ominously in her flesh, already dissolving into her bloodstream. It had been meant for Gorin. She’d thrown herself in front of him, a reflex honed by a lifetime of protecting the only person who had ever truly seen her. “Jynva!” Gorin skidded to a halt, his hand flying to her arm, his face a mask of horrified realization. “No, no, not again. What did they hit you with?” “Doesn’t matter.” Her voice was a strained whisper, her muscles already beginning to seize. “Run, Gorin. Go!” She tried to shove him, but her arm was dead weight. He refused, sweeping his gaze across the cul-de-sac of shattered ceramite and overflowing waste conduits. A single, flickering neon sign above them sputtered ‘*Synth-Glow Eats*’ in a parody of welcome. They were trapped. Just then, a faint moan drew their attention. Tucked into a shadowed alcove, a figure lay crumpled, unnaturally still. A girl, no older than Jynva, perhaps seventeen. Her skin, even in the dim light, possessed an unnatural pallor, a stark contrast to the intricate, bioluminescent patterns woven beneath her left temple – the unmistakable mark of high-tier Cortael biogenics. Elite augments. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, irregular gasps. Gorin moved first, kneeling beside her. “She’s… dying.” Jynva pushed herself forward, the dart’s toxin making her limbs heavy, her thoughts sluggish, yet a sudden, cold clarity pierced through the haze. Cortael. The most powerful empire in Zetharis, rivals to Ophien. And this girl was a pureblood, a bearer of their coveted genetic lineage, evident in the sophisticated dermal-chips embedded along her forearm. One of them, a tiny, glowing node, pulsed with biometric data, a direct link to the Cortael registry. The thudding footsteps were almost upon them now, accompanied by the snarls of the Ophien enforcers. There was no time. Jynva’s hand, trembling but resolute, reached for the girl’s arm. “What are you doing?” Gorin hissed, his voice laced with terror. “She’s Cortael.” Jynva’s gaze stayed on the glowing node. “They’ll never stop hunting an Ophien outcast.” Her fingers scrabbled at the girl’s wrist, finding the smooth, cool surface of the biometic chip. She pulled her worn utility blade from her boot, the dull metal gleaming faintly. Without hesitation, she pressed the edge against the girl’s skin, carving a precise, shallow circle around the implant. Blood welled, dark and thick, but Jynva ignored it, her focus absolute. The girl’s eyes fluttered open, a silent, pleading gasp escaping her lips before they fixed on Jynva’s face, then glazed over. With a sickening *pop*, the chip came free, slick with blood and tissue. Jynva didn’t pause. She pressed it against her own skin, just above the dart wound, where the Ophien toxin was still burning. With a rough, swift motion, she used the blunt end of her blade to force the chip into her own flesh. A numbing freeze drove straight into the marrow of her forearm. The biometrics were integrating, a foreign identity knitting itself into her very being. Just as the chip flickered to life, showing a stable connection, a high-pitched whine tore through the smog. A massive, sleek black Cortael sky-skiff descended, its powerful thrusters kicking up a gale of toxic dust and debris. Before it even touched down, heavily armored figures in dark-chromium exosuits dropped from its belly, landing with bone-jarring force. Each suit bore the coiled serpent emblem of the Cortael Ascendants, their weapons already raised. The Ophien enforcers, emerging from the tunnel mouth, froze, their snarls dying in their throats. The lead pursuer lifted a gauntlet, opening his mouth to call for a parley. The Ascendants offered none. Pulsing energy bolts erupted from their rifles, tearing through the Ophien ranks, reducing them to smoking, twitching heaps of ruptured ceramite and charred flesh. The alley was silent again, save for the whirring of the skiff’s rotors and the hiss of cooling weaponry. One of the Ascendants, taller and broader than the rest, approached, his helmet’s optical sensors glowing a cold blue. He knelt before Jynva, his gaze falling to her blood-soaked arm, to the freshly implanted chip pulsing beneath her skin. He said nothing, simply extended a hand, his touch surprisingly gentle, and helped her to her feet. As she was guided towards the skiff’s open maw, Jynva’s eyes drifted to a small, security monitor embedded in the hull. On its screen, the lined, aristocratic visage of Vordyn Cortael filled the display. His thin mouth curved into a slow, knowing smile. His pale pupils locked onto hers across the feed, fixing on the fresh incision where Cortael blood mingled with her own. The skiff’s ramp hissed shut, enveloping her in the sterile chill of its interior. Vordyn Cortael’s voice, calm and deep, crackled over the intercom. “Welcome home, daughter. We have much to discuss about your new face.”
