Kairo's lungs burned, a raw, desperate fire that threatened to consume him from the inside. Each frantic scramble across a thick, moss-slicked branch was a gamble, his skinny frame a blur against the moon-dappled leaves. Below, the guttural snarls of the Bloodfang pack echoed, an unrelenting chorus of predatory rage. He risked a glance over his shoulder. The Alpha, a dark, muscled silhouette, had already scaled the lower trunk of the massive oak, its glowing red eyes fixed on him with unwavering malice. Two more wolves were following, their claws scraping against the bark, gaining purchase with frightening speed.
"They're faster than I thought," Kairo gasped, a thin thread of terror weaving through his thoughts. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat demanding escape. He couldn't fight them up here. He couldn't fight them at all, not yet. He still felt the phantom ache of the Alpha's teeth from his previous encounter, a stark reminder of his physical limitations. His only advantage was the tangled chaos of the canopy.
He launched himself across a gap, his hands gripping a branch that sagged precariously under his weight. Splinters dug into his palms, but he ignored them, his focus solely on forward momentum. `Stealth` was useless now; the snarling below was proof enough of that. It was pure, unadulterated flight.
Suddenly, a massive black shape erupted from the trunk of the oak directly beneath him. One of the larger Bloodfang wolves, its fur matted with forest debris, coiled its powerful legs and sprang, a silent, terrifying projectile. It soared through the air, claws extended, aiming for his feet. Kairo twisted mid-air, a gasp tearing from his throat, narrowly avoiding the raking talons. He landed awkwardly on the next branch, almost losing his footing.
A flash of blue text appeared in his vision:

"Yes!" Kairo hissed, his voice raw. He didn't even think about it. Any advantage, any edge, was welcome now.

A surge of energy, faint but noticeable, bloomed in his legs. He didn't have time to analyze it. The Bloodfang Tracker, having missed its mark, scrambled furiously up the bark, its eyes burning. Kairo needed to create distance.
He spotted a larger, thicker branch about ten feet away, a gap he would normally struggle to clear without a running start. This time, he didn't hesitate. "Feral Leap!" he muttered, concentrating, pushing off with newfound power.
His body felt lighter, more agile. He cleared the gap with surprising ease, landing silently on the branch, a jolt of exhilaration momentarily overriding his fear. It wasn't a huge improvement, but it was enough. The Bloodfang Tracker snarled in frustration as it reached the edge of the previous branch, momentarily stalled.
"Just a little further," Kairo panted, pushing himself harder. He could hear the Alpha's heavy breathing close behind him now, a deep rumble that vibrated through the very wood he gripped. He could feel the heat of its breath, the sheer power radiating from its form.
He zig-zagged through the upper reaches of the forest, a desperate dance between life and death. The canopy here was a maze of ancient trees, their branches intertwining like gnarled fingers. He moved from oak to elm, from elm to weeping willow, using every twist and turn to his advantage. The wolves, though agile, were heavier, and the smaller, more brittle branches snapped under their weight, forcing them to find sturdier paths. This bought him precious seconds.
He reached a cluster of incredibly dense, ancient pines, their needles forming a thick, almost impenetrable ceiling. Below them, the forest floor was swallowed in shadow, a deep, ominous void. Kairo knew this was his best chance. He dove into the pine canopy, ignoring the needles that scratched at his face and hands. The branches were incredibly close together, forming a natural, if uncomfortable, labyrinth.
The Alpha roared below, a sound of pure fury. Kairo could hear it, and at least one other wolf, attempting to follow, but they were too large, too heavy. The thick, resinous branches resisted their efforts, snagging their fur, slowing their ascent to a crawl. He heard frustrated yelps, the sound of tearing bark, and then, silence, save for the wind rustling through the pines.
He didn't stop. He pushed deeper, navigating the tight spaces, until the sounds of the chase faded entirely. Only then did he allow himself to collapse onto a thick, horizontal branch, pressing his face into the rough bark, his entire body trembling. His muscles screamed in protest, every fiber burning with exhaustion. His lungs felt raw, air rasping in and out.

Kairo coughed, a dry, hacking sound. He ignored the system prompt, trying to slow his breathing, to still the frantic rhythm of his heart. He was safe, for now. But the sheer terror of the chase left an icy residue in his veins. He closed his eyes, replaying the wolf's terrifying leap, the Alpha's glowing eyes. They were relentless. He couldn't afford to rest for long.
Slowly, carefully, he pulled himself into a sitting position, leaning against the sturdy trunk of the pine. He needed to assess his situation. His leather jerkin had a few new tears, and his hands were scratched and bleeding, but nothing serious. He took a sip from his waterskin, the cool liquid a balm to his parched throat. His inventory held only his basic tools, some dried rations, and a few minor healing salves he'd crafted weeks ago. He had used his `Enhanced Snare Kit` and lost it.
He activated `Observe`. The surrounding pines formed a small, almost hidden grove. The moonlight struggled to penetrate the dense needles, leaving the area in deep shadow. He could still smell the faint, musky scent of wolf, carried on the breeze, a constant reminder. They were still out there, circling.
Kairo knew he couldn't simply descend and walk away. The Bloodfang pack would be waiting. He had to assume they would remember his scent, his presence. He needed a way to truly lose them, or at least a path that would put enough distance and obstacles between them.
He pulled out his small, crude map of the region, illuminated by a faint, warm glow from his system interface. Oakhaven was still a good day's journey, perhaps more now that he was forced to travel indirectly. The path he had been taking followed a river, but the river itself was in open terrain for much of its length, too exposed.
He traced a finger over the contours. To his east, the terrain rose sharply into what was marked as the "Whispering Hills," a place rumored to be wild and untamed, even by Tianhua's standards. It was rarely traveled, perhaps too dangerous for common bandits, but also for common travelers. The dense forest here flowed into those hills. If he could navigate them, he might lose the pack. It was a risky gamble.
"Whispering Hills," he muttered, the name itself a chilling whisper in the quiet night. He didn't know what dangers lay there, but staying put was a death sentence, and returning the way he came was suicide. The only way was forward.
He needed to move under the cover of the remaining darkness, before dawn brought clearer visibility for his pursuers. He couldn't afford to be caught in the open again. His new `Feral Leap` skill might prove invaluable in the broken terrain of the hills. It was a small comfort, but he clung to it.
With a heavy sigh, Kairo pushed himself up. Every muscle protested, but the fear of the Bloodfang Alpha spurred him onward. He took one last look around, then began to carefully, silently, pick his way through the dense pine branches, heading east, deeper into the unknown, towards the Whispering Hills and, eventually, Oakhaven. The journey was far from over.
