Chapter 1: Frostbitten Boots and Shattered Pride

1.6k words

Freezing wind sliced through Elaria’s thin wool cloak like a physical blade. Sannahed did not offer mercy to the weak, and today, she felt exceptionally weak. Her fingers, tucked into oversized woolen mittens, had lost all feeling miles ago. She stumbled, her oversized boots catching on a hidden shelf of black ice. Her knees slammed into the hard, unforgiving permafrost, sending a jolt of pure agony up her spine. The staff of polished ash slipped from her grasp, clattering against the frozen earth. 'Watch your step, wizard,' a gruff voice growled through the howling gale. Kaelen, the veteran mercenary leading this miserable expedition, didn't turn back to help her. He kept his head low, his massive broadsword strapped to his back like a giant metal spine. He was a man of few words, and most of them were warnings. Snow caked his heavy leather shoulders, turning his dark hair a premature white. Every step he took was deliberate, carving a path through the knee-deep drifts that threatened to swallow them whole. He had survived Sannahed for a decade, but even his legendary endurance was flagging. Desperation clawed at Elaria’s chest as she dragged her numb legs forward. She scrambled to grab her staff, her frozen fingers clumsy as they wrapped around the cold wood. She couldn't show weakness, not now, not to these cynical mercenaries who already thought she was dead weight. High Mage Vaelen’s parting words rang louder than the roaring wind. *'You are a defect, Elaria. A stain on our legacy. Go freeze in the wastes, for all I care.'* Bitter memories of her father's cold, disappointed eyes fueled her steps. She had to prove him wrong, even if it killed her out here in the frozen wastes. She had to show them she could be useful. Shivering violently, she clutched her wooden staff closer to her chest. The polished ash wood felt like a rod of ice against her fingers, devoid of any comforting warmth. Her oversized robe, a hand-me-down from her perfect, high-achieving sister Lyra, kept catching on the jagged rocks. Crystals of frost clung to her eyelashes, blurring her vision as she scanned the white void. She could barely see five feet in front of her, let alone navigate the treacherous mountain pass. Behind her, Joran, the mercenary archer, let out a low, shuddering groan. His fingers were too stiff to even notch an arrow, his bow string stiffened by the unnatural cold. He was huddled in a tight ball, his face pale under his hood. 'If we don't find shelter in five minutes, we're dead men,' Joran muttered, his voice muffled by his thick wool scarf. Jagged rock formations finally rose ahead, offering a pathetic excuse for a windbreak. It was a narrow crevice, barely wide enough for three people, but it shielded them from the worst of the biting wind. Kaelen collapsed against the frozen stone, his breath emerging in ragged, gray plumes. He ripped off his thick gloves to rub his blue-tinged hands, swearing under his breath as his skin turned bright red from the friction. 'We stay here until the squall passes,' he muttered, his jaw clenched tight against the violent shivering that wracked his massive frame. Cold was a slow, agonizing killer in Sannahed, creeping into the bones and turning blood to slush. Elaria saw the desperate looks on their faces and felt a familiar, crushing weight of worthlessness pressing down on her. She had to do something. She couldn't just sit here and watch them freeze while she clutched her useless staff, pretending to be a real wizard. 'I can help,' she offered, her voice cracking as she stepped forward into the center of the cramped shelter. 'Please, let me try a simple hearth-spark.' Kaelen’s icy blue eyes locked onto her, filled with deep, exhausting suspicion. He looked at her staff, then at her trembling hands, and scoffed. 'You’re a level one novice, girl,' he spat, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. 'Last time you cast, you blew the tavern door off its hinges and nearly took my eyebrows with it.' 'That was an accident,' she pleaded, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. 'I was nervous. I've practiced since then. I can do this.' 'Just don't kill us,' Kaelen grunted, leaning his head back against the stone and closing his eyes in sheer exhaustion. Shifting her weight, Elaria cleared her throat and raised her trembling staff. She closed her eyes, trying to focus on the warmth she so desperately wanted to provide. She wanted them to smile at her, to accept her, to say she belonged. Memories of her family's warm hearth in the capital flickered in her mind. She remembered the laughter of her siblings, the smell of roasted chestnuts, the feeling of safety that she had never truly been allowed to share. They used to laugh at her when she sneezed and set a rug on fire. Eventually, the laughter turned to disgust, and then to absolute, suffocating silence. Bitter cold brought her back to the harsh reality of the wastes. She needed this spell to work, to prove she had some value. 'Ignis...' she whispered, focusing all her energy on the tip of her staff, trying to channel a gentle, glowing ember. Blue light flickered, bright and promising, casting long, dancing shadows against the rock walls. For a moment, it felt like it might actually work. Suddenly, a savage gust of wind caught her oversized robe, throwing her off balance. She gasped, her foot slipping on a patch of black ice hidden beneath the snow. 'Whoa!' she yelled, flailing her arms to keep from falling. Magical energy surged wildly, escaping her control as her panic took over. Instead of shooting outward to form a campfire, the spark traveled down her arms, down her torso, and pooled at her feet. A sharp, crackling sound echoed through the canyon, like glass shattering under pressure. 'What did you do?' Kaelen roared, lunging forward with his eyes wide. Looking down, Elaria’s eyes widened in sheer horror. Thick, iron-hard ice had encased her leather boots, fusing them directly to the permafrost. She tried to lift her foot, but she was completely anchored to the ground. She was a living statue, frozen in place. 'I... I can't move,' she whispered, her voice trembling as tears gathered in her eyes, freezing almost instantly on her cheeks. 'You useless fool!' Kaelen snarled, grabbing his sword and scrambling to his feet. 'You've frozen yourself to the mountain!' Low growls vibrated through the howling wind, freezing the blood in Elaria’s veins. Out of the swirling white mist, glowing yellow eyes materialized, circling their small shelter. Six massive ice-wolves slithered into the clearing, their fur matted with frost and their lean bodies built for killing. They were the apex predators of Sannahed, smart enough to wait for the storm to weaken their prey. Saliva dripped from their jagged fangs, freezing into icicles before hitting the ground. They moved with silent, deadly grace. 'Stand back, Elaria!' Kaelen yelled, stepping in front of her and raising his massive broadsword. 'I can't!' she cried out, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. 'My feet are literally frozen to the mountain!' One of the wolves lunged, its massive jaws snapping inches from Kaelen's face. He parried with his greatsword, sparks flying as steel met razor-sharp teeth, but the force of the blow pushed him back. Behind him, Joran tried to draw his bow, but the tension was too high. With a loud *snap*, the frozen bowstring parted, slashing his cheek. 'Curse it!' Joran screamed, clutching his bleeding face. Another wolf circled around, locking its glowing yellow gaze directly on the helpless Elaria. It bared its fangs, sensing her absolute vulnerability. Panic, cold and sharp, gripped her throat. She was going to die here, useless and forgotten, just as her father predicted. She was going to get these men killed because she couldn't even cast a basic spark spell. Shame burned hotter than any fire spell, a deep, agonizing pain in the center of her chest. She could hear Vaelen's mocking voice in her head, louder than ever. *'Always a burden. Always failing.'* 'No,' she whispered, her knuckles turning white around her staff as a wave of intense anger and self-loathing washed over her. 'I won't let them die because of me. I won't!' Deep within her, something raw and ancient snapped. Her intense emotions, her desperate need to protect them, morphed into pure, volatile power. A shockwave of violet light erupted from her chest, pulsing outward like a physical hammer. The sheer force of the kinetic blast tore through the air, shattering the nearby rocks into dust. Snow and ice exploded upward in a blinding curtain, erasing the world in a flash of violet energy. The massive ice-wolves were thrown backward, howling in agony as the kinetic force slammed them into the canyon walls. Kaelen was knocked off his feet, sliding across the ice before stopping near the edge of the cliff, his broadsword clattering away. He stared at her, his eyes wide with absolute horror and disbelief. 'What... what are you?' he gasped, his voice trembling as he looked at the shattered stone around her. Elaria stood trembling, her chest heaving as she gasped for air. Her boots were still frozen solid to the ground, but the magic had left her completely drained and terrified. Shame washed over her, heavy and suffocating. She had exposed her dangerous instability, her monstrous lack of control, to the very people she wanted to accept her. They would hate her now. They would leave her. As the smoke clears, the ice-wolves don't retreat; instead, they part to reveal a towering, sapphire-fanged Frost Mammoth charging directly at Elaria's frozen-in-place feet.
