The Cipher Unlocked

Stasys took half a step forward, low breath rasping in his chest, but Vija’s fingers hooked into his sleeve and checked him. Her gaze stayed locked on the commander. Every drill in the Spire had demanded this exact stillness, peeling away panic until only raw mechanics remained.
“Fine,” Vija said, her voice flat, devoid of inflection. The word tasted like ash. “You win.”
A thin smile pulled at the commander's mouth. “Of course I do, Kante. It was always inevitable.” He flicked his wrist toward the archway of the orrery room. “The Heart awaits your touch. We followed its signature across the marches once it attuned to you.” He signaled a subordinate, who stepped forward with drawn steel, leveling the edge against Stasys's collar. “Our host comes too. The Spire's dissection tables will welcome him.”
Vija set her chin and marched toward the threshold. Stasys tracked her progress, jaw rigid beneath the guard's steel.
“Such a predictable creature, aren’t you, Vija?” Her former mentor fell into step beside her, boots crisp against the flagstones. “All that volatility, brought to heel by a sick boy in a hovel. The Ministry foresaw it. Your talents were an erratic nuisance until Kirnavas yielded an anchor.”
At the entrance to the mechanism hall, the Heart flared behind brass rings, shaking the floor with deep vibrations that rattled in her teeth. It promised ruin, an invitation to reduce the border provinces to slag. Heat prickled under her palms, the old surge demanding release.
“We simply needed the key,” he said, drawing an apparatus of brass wire and faceted quartz from his coat. “This ensures your obedience. When you grip the core, it channels the discharge, turning you into an engine of siege. Think of it: blighted wastes scorched clean without wasting a single legion. And all to buy drops for your brother's cup.” He gave a short, dry laugh. “A loyal instrument at last.”
He watched her lift one arm toward the revolving brass rings. The hum rose to an ear-splitting whine. Her blood burned, urging her to seize the core and detonate the chamber.
Yet the Seneschal's riddle rang through the din: to break the cage required surrender not for the beast, but to it.
Her hand veered away from the core and clamped onto Stasys's forearm. She hauled him forward with all her weight, knocking the flanking guard aside and yanking the cursed lord into her chest. His gaze collided with hers in fierce disbelief.
“Take it,” she whispered, pressing her forehead against his. She shoved her internal fire across the contact, forcing the destructive coil outward not as flame, but as an open tether.
Brilliance burst between them, a shock of verdant illumination that slammed against the stone. The Heart screeched under the backlash, its facets fracturing before collapsing into pale powder. In the commander's grip, the brass apparatus split with a hiss of black smoke. The shockwave tossed the guards against the pillars, while Valeriu stumbled backward, sleeve raised against the glare.
As the glare died, silence settled over the ruined hall. Vija stepped back, a fresh lattice of pale silver etched into the skin of her forearm. The destructive itch in her marrow had quieted, banked like coals under damp loam.
Stasys stood upright, drawing clean air into his lungs. The animal fever had vanished from his irises, leaving him lucid and steady on his feet.
The commander recovered his footing, staring from the dust on the pedestal to the unbroken pair. “What in the Abyss...?” he snarled, teeth bared. “You ignorant, sentimental fool!”
Vija faced him down, lifting her scarred forearm as green sparks traced the fresh lines in her flesh.
“No,” Vija said, her voice even. “I’ve just begun.”
The Spire guards closed ranks, steel whistling as they drew back their blades. Valeriu signaled, then sprang straight at her.
