Chapter 2 of 10
A Transaction of Shadows

The blunt edge of the training blade bit into Mikkel’s throat, a cold promise of pain. Sanna’s eyes, usually alight with mischievous glints, were flat, opaque discs of obsidian. Her grip on the hilt was steady, unwavering, entirely unlike the playful sparring they usually engaged in. The air in the corridor grew colder, the hush amplifying the thrum of his own pulse against the steel.
He had written her to be perceptive, yes, a sharp-witted rogue. But her loyalty to Rostova was meant to be absolute, her awareness of Mikkel’s deeper capacities limited to occasional, well-meaning concern. This was a fracture, a blatant divergence from the script. He felt the phantom brush of a ‘Shatterpoint’ ripple, though no notification appeared. His carefully constructed narrative was already fraying at the edges.
The bumbling Mikkel Aalto, the one who tripped over his own feet and offered clumsy, well-intentioned advice, dissolved. Faelan resurfaced, cold and clinical, the author analyzing a rogue element. He met her gaze, not with fear, but with a calculated intensity that stripped away the last vestiges of his facade.
“The real Mikkel, Sanna,” he said, his voice dropping to a low, even cadence, devoid of the familiar nervous stammer. It was not a question, but a direct repudiation of her premise. “Was a fool. And he would never have known that your family, the Volkov-Niemi line, owes a staggering debt of 30,000 ‘Crowns of Solace’ to the House of Karkov, a debt that threatens to strip you of your ancestral holdings in the Veridian Vale by next season.”
Sanna’s eyes, for the first time, flickered. The blade wavered, just a fraction of an inch, but it was enough. The obsidian cracked, revealing a sliver of raw, exposed vulnerability. Her mouth, previously a thin, grim line, parted slightly.
“How… how could you possibly know that?” Her voice dropped to a taut breath, the carefully constructed mask of the fierce rogue momentarily slipping. The debt was a closely guarded secret, known only to a handful of elders within her family, and certainly not to a junior cadet at Koltova.
“I know many secrets, Sanna,” Mikkel replied, allowing a hint of cruel satisfaction to color his tone. “Truths that would seem impossible, even to you. Knowledge that could unravel the very fabric of this academy, this city, the fortress itself. And more importantly,” he paused, letting the implication hang heavy in the air, “leverage that could make that debt disappear. Completely.”
The stillness stretched, punctuated only by the distant clatter of boots echoing from another wing of the facility. Sanna’s grip tightened on the blade, but the pressure against his throat eased. Her eyes searched his, a whirlwind of suspicion, fear, and a desperate, fragile hope.
“What are you?” she finally breathed, the question a stark admission of his power over her.
“A solution,” Mikkel said, his gaze unwavering. “A means to an end. For both of us. But for that, you need to understand something crucial. You need to hold your tongue. And you need to be loyal. Not to Rostova, not to the academy, but to me. Your friend, Mikkel. The one who can make your problems vanish.”
Sanna slowly withdrew the blade, her movements stiff, mechanical. She didn’t return it to his belt, but kept it clutched in her hand, a silent threat, a reminder of her initial intent. “You’re not Mikkel,” she stated, but this time, there was no accusation, only a dawning, terrible comprehension. “Or at least, not the one I knew. He’s been… different. For weeks.”
Mikkel’s carefully constructed composure fractured. “Weeks?” he echoed, alarm lurching through his gut. His reincarnation had struck as a sharp, sudden awakening during the sparring exercise just yesterday morning. He could recall the sensation of Faelan’s consciousness snapping into Mikkel’s body, his authorial knowledge flooding his mind. But weeks? That was impossible.
“Yes, weeks,” Sanna insisted, her gaze sharpening, seeing the crack in his controlled exterior. “Do you recall the ‘Iron Gauntlet’ trials? The one with the collapsing ice bridge over the Kolt River chasm?”
Mikkel wracked his mind. The Iron Gauntlet. He had outlined it in `The Bastion’s Sun`, a pivotal moment for Rostova, a near-death experience that forged his resolve. But Mikkel Aalto was supposed to have been at the back of the group, a clumsy distraction, not a key player. He had no memory of being there, not as *this* Mikkel, not with *his* memories.
“You… you stopped four cadets from plunging into the chasm,” Sanna continued, her voice gaining a desperate urgency. “Including Rostova. You saw the stress fractures in the ice before anyone else, you yelled, you shoved them clear. You even caught young Elian Vargo as he slipped, all without a scratch. No one could explain it. Everyone thought it was luck. But I watched you. Your eyes, the way you moved. You knew.”
[Shatterpoint Detected: Emergent Narrative – The Ice Whisperer.]
[Narrative Resonance System Rerouting… Divergence Pattern Established.]
Mikkel felt a cold dread seep into his bones. The Ice Whisperer. He had written a minor side character, a reclusive scout with an innate connection to ice formations, who had saved Rostova during a later, less significant mission. Not Mikkel. Not his own character. And certainly not weeks ago. His reincarnation wasn't new. He had been here, in this body, experiencing, perceiving, *acting* before Faelan's consciousness had fully integrated. He was missing memories, crucial moments where Mikkel Aalto, the 'comic relief,' had acted with impossible foresight, creating ‘Shatterpoints’ before Faelan had even recognized his new existence.
His control was an illusion. His understanding, incomplete. The world he thought he owned, the story he believed he dictated, was already a runaway train, gathering momentum in directions he hadn’t foreseen.
“What do you want?” Sanna’s question cut through his spiraling thoughts, her face a mask of weary resolve. The desperation for her family’s survival was winning out over her confusion and fear. She was shrewd. She knew an opportunity when she saw one, even if it came from a ghost.
“Silence about what you know,” Mikkel stated, forcing his mind back to the present. “And your absolute, unswerving cooperation in anything I ask. In return, the Karkov debt will cease to exist. Consider it a transaction. A secret kept, a secret paid for.”
Sanna stared at him, her lips pressed into a thin line, considering. Her gaze flicked to the training blade still in her hand, then back to his steady, unblinking eyes. “Done,” she finally conceded, her voice barely audible, a pact made in the shadowy corridor.
As if on cue, the muffled blare of a brass horn echoed through the halls, followed by the distant clamor of cadets rushing from their dorms. Agitated murmurs began filtering down the corridor. Sanna’s head snapped up, her attention momentarily diverted from their clandestine bargain.
“What’s that?” she muttered, turning towards the main hall. She started to move, the blade still clutched in her hand, a habit born of years of street-fighting and institute brawls. Mikkel followed, his mind still reeling from the revelation of his missing time, the unexpected precocity of his own host body.
They emerged into the bustling central hall, where a throng of cadets, their faces a mix of excitement and apprehension, crowded around a freshly posted notice board. A senior officer, a grim-faced centurion, hammered a thick, official parchment onto the oak surface with a series of sharp, decisive thuds. The air crackled with a sudden, tangible tension. Mikkel pushed his way through the jostling bodies, a sense of foreboding settling in his gut.
The parchment bore the heavy seal of the `Council of Wardens`, emblazoned with the coiled serpent of the Citadel Guard. His eyes scanned the precise, elegant script, dread blooming cold and immediate in his chest.

Joris Vayne. Mikkel knew him from the manuscript. A minor antagonist from the first act of `The Bastion’s Sun`, intended to provide a brief, early obstacle for Rostova. But in his novel, Vayne had merely been a bully, easily dispatched, not a threat to the hero’s physical well-being. The mention of “incapacitation” and the Vayne lineage’s reputation for brutal, crippling tactics left a cold prickle in Mikkel's veins.
This wasn't just a provocation. This was a trap. And it was a fight Rostova was never meant to have, not like this.
