Chapter 9 of 10
The Spire Falls
904 words
The plastic casing bit into Nara's palm. Kenji's words left no room for retreat: bring down the MedTech endeavor, bring down the Chairman. The neat exit strategy had collapsed into open sabotage.
“The annual shareholder meeting,” Nara said, her voice flat, “It’s in two cycles. The perfect stage.” She looked up, meeting his exhausted gaze. “We hit them there. Everything. No half measures.”
Kenji gave a spare nod. “You reach the core. I’ll keep the old man pinned at the lectern.”
Through the next three hours, cold air seeped through the vents while they timed their strikes. Nara mapped routing exploits on her deck, building an automated cascade to shatter the Hwan firewalls. Across the low table, Kenji marked sections of SEC disclosures and disputed debt filings.
Two cycles later, the Hwan Consortium’s main boardroom on the 90th floor of The Spire hummed with manufactured gravitas. Chairman Hwan, a predatory smile etched onto his face, stood at the podium, basking in the deference of his shareholders. Kenji, impeccably dressed in a suit the color of storm clouds, sat at the main table, a picture of detached composure.
“My fellow stakeholders,” the Chairman boomed, “We stand on the precipice of unparalleled expansion. The MedTech Initiative, our crowning achievement, promises a future where…”
Kenji leaned into his desk microphone, his voice cutting clean across the patriarch's cadence. “Chairman, if I may. While the vision is expansive, our investors deserve a granular audit of the cash flow and liabilities surrounding the Archeon Bio-Systems acquisition. Specifically, the unlisted covenants regarding their Phase Two clinical trials.”
The Chairman's grin hardened, his mouth tightening into a thin crease. “That ledger belongs to the board, Kenji, not an open floor.”
“Yet it dictates the valuation,” Kenji countered without looking away. “Transparency on a multi-trillion-won initiative is mandatory.” He began untangling the shell companies, citing missing regulatory approvals and inflated asset reserves, dragging his elder into granular defenses that burned minute after minute.
Three levels down, in the Chairman's private quarters, Nara slipped behind the obsidian desk. Her ankle cuff hummed faintly, pumping loop feeds of sleeping cats into the security hub, but she ignored the vibration and jacked her bypass directly into the master rig.
She unlocked the root partition with Kenji's purloined keycard. Green strings spilled over the glass monitor, deploying the dispersal script she had compiled before dawn. With a hard tap of her thumb, she engaged the payload.
`INITIATING DATA DISPERSAL: MEDTECH PROTOCOL 7.3.1. – COGNIS LINK TRIALS – MIN-HEE CHOI DISAPPEARANCE – FINANCIAL MALFEASANCE…`
The transfer bar crept along the bezel, tick by tick. Server fans whined in the wall bays, their intake vents rattling as the drive began unpacking encrypted dossiers.
The terminal flashed amber. An unauthorized trace slammed into the data trunk from outside the Hwan subnet, aggressive and unmistakable: Lady Jin-seo's signature, hammering the port to force a remote wipe.
“Predictable,” Nara whispered, a thin, humourless smile touching her lips. The matriarch was attempting a remote wipe, hoping to erase all traces before the data could fully disseminate, believing herself to be cleaning up a mess she hadn't made.
But Nara had built the system with a failsafe. A 'digital ghost'. As the rival signature tried to delete the streaming information, Nara’s pre-programmed counter-script activated. The data didn't vanish. Instead, it fractured, replicated, and then aggressively sought out every available broadcast node.
`WIPE ATTEMPT DETECTED. RE-ROUTING TO PUBLIC FEED. BROADCAST INITIATED.`
In the boardroom, Kenji was dissecting offshore holding companies when the tablet on the podium chattered against the wood. The Chairman glanced down, stiffening, before the thirty-foot transparent wall display stuttered, dropped its corporate reel, and blasted financial ledgers, wiretaps, and unredacted audio across the hall: Min-hee Choi's distorted voice, pleading and screaming Min-jun's name.
Shouts erupted across the rows as the wall flashed clinical logs from Cognis Link, signed disposal directives bearing the Chairman's personal digital seal, and encrypted logs from Lady Jin-seo coordinating the cover-up.
Panic seized the room. Chairman Hwan’s face turned an unhealthy shade of purple. He lunged for his tablet, furiously tapping, but the stream was unstoppable. It was everywhere.
Across Xanyang, holographic billboards along the transit corridors and monitors inside the bullet trains hijacked the public feed. Commuters halted on platforms, illuminated by raw financial fraud documents and interrogation tapes playing on repeat.
Downstairs, Nara watched the confirmation flag print across the terminal: `BROADCAST COMPLETE`. The trap had sprung; both dynasties were laid out for the regulators.
Just as she turned to leave, a harsh, blaring siren erupted through The Spire. A chilling, mechanical voice echoed through the building: `ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL. THE SPIRE IS NOW IN LOCKDOWN. UNAUTHORIZED DATA BREACH DETECTED. ALL EXITS SEALED. SECURITY FORCES DEPLOYED.`
The band around her ankle whined, the housing turning scalding hot against her tendon. A blistering shock spiked up her calf. The Chairman had hit the remote punishment relay.
Nara gasped, stumbling backwards, her vision blurring at the edges from the searing pain radiating from her ankle. The monitor glowed an angry crimson, the humming intensifying, promising a far more devastating discharge. She knew what it was designed to do, a last resort to neutralize a rogue asset. Her muscles seized. She was falling.
The double doors slammed back against the wall. Kenji sprinted across the parquet, hit the floor, and dragged her down beneath him as the collar around her leg burst in an arc of white-hot sparks.
