Chapter 9 of 10

Sweeping the Trash

"Drop him, old snake," Zirak called out, his voice scraping like rebar over gravel. The old man's grin stretched wide across his half-liquified face, peeling synthetic flesh back from blackened chrome molars. Sharp talons sank a fraction deeper into Arslan Ghori's throat. The President's heels drummed against split marble tiles, each twitch weaker than the last. "Empty bravado from a scullery rat," Hakim purred. His torso rippled, coils of dull gray fluid churning beneath translucent dermal sheets. "You think because you swept up a few digital stray dogs, you understand architecture? You are slag, Zirak. Raw material that mistook its mold for an empire. Give me the engine in your breast, or I snap the neck of this pathetic relic and open the atmospheric floodgates. Make your peace." Beside Zirak, Laleh tightened her stance, her twin plasma daggers humming a shrill, manic pitch. Smudged soot coated her cheek, yet her gaze never wavered from the tyrant's throat. "Don't listen to him, Zirak. We hit him together. High and low. I can split his focus—" "Back off, Laleh." She whipped her head toward him, stunned. "What?" "I said stand down." Zirak dismissed the golden halberd with a sharp flick of his wrist. The brilliant haft broke into grains of gold, dissolving into the floor. Then, piece by interlocking piece, the gleaming tungsten plates covering his ribs, shoulders, and thighs slid back under his skin, leaving him in ragged gray canvas coveralls that smelled of industrial floor-wax and copper. He looked small. Scrawny. Just an undercity drudge who had drifted into a hall where gods were supposed to bleed. "Zirak, you idiot! What are you doing?!" Laleh lunged, seizing his sleeve. Her knuckles were bone-white. "He will rip you apart! Do you hear me? Look at me!" Zirak ripped his arm from her grip with a deliberate, spiteful sneer. "I'm tired of playing soldier. I never asked to guard this tower. I never asked for you, or Arslan, or any of this noise. I want my quiet room back. Take the core, Hakim. Let me rot in the basement where I belong." "Zirak, no!" Her scream cracked in the middle, jagged with raw horror. He kept his back turned. To turn around was to show the tremor in his throat, and Zirak Qadir would sooner gargle acid than reveal weakness. He kept his spine slightly hunched, dragging the scuffed soles of his boots as he shuffled across the blood-splattered dais. Each step brought him closer to the towering monstrosity. Hakim chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. "Sensible beast. A stray dog knows when the leash returns." With a careless toss, Hakim flung Arslan aside. The Vanguard President skidded across the broken tiles, gasping for air against a collapsed pillar. The creature stepped forward, shadows cascading over the boy's slight frame. A mutated right hand extended, digits sharpening into five hollow drills of matte-black carbon. "Come then. Return what was grown in my soil." Zirak stopped an arm's length away. He looked down at the floor, shoulders sagging as if beaten. "Just make it quick. Don't leave me crippled." "No promises, boy." The traitor drove those carbon claws straight into Zirak's chest. The sound was like shearing tin—screeching, wet, and final. Those talons sank past canvas and sternum directly into the furnace glowing beneath the breastbone. The elder's face twisted in pure greed, eyes rolling back to siphon the golden prize. Then Zirak's hand snapped shut around Hakim's wrist. It was not the trembling grip of a beaten servant. It was a hydraulic vice, clamped so hard that the mutated alloy beneath Hakim's skin creaked and warped. Crimson pupils snapped down, the thrill instantly curdling into confusion. "What—" Zirak looked up. The slouch was gone. The vacant, beaten stare had evaporated, replaced by an obsidian glare that burned with pure, distilled spite. "Rule number one of waste management, you bloated parasite," Zirak whispered, his lips curling into a feral grin. "You never stick your bare hand into an active incinerator." [Skill Activated: Deep Clean] A deafening, flatline tone tore through the hall. It carried no song of a combat art; it sounded like an ancient diagnostic purge booting inside an overloaded reactor. Zirak dropped all defenses around his core. He opened every floodgate, refusing to feed the elder clean power. Over months of clearing the academy's sub-levels, scouring toxic runoff and scraping discarded combat data, Zirak had collected mountains of compressed, unformatted garbage. Petabytes of raw, filthy systemic sewage surged through his ribs and straight up the drill-tipped needles in his flesh. Hakim screamed. It was a screech of violent biological revolt. The pristine, predatory gray fluid inside the monster's veins began to curd into white, calcified sludge. His arm expanded violently, the skin splitting as hundreds of megabytes of digital detritus clogged his bio-circuits. The stolen power couldn't assimilate the garbage; it was choking on unrefined, useless grit. "Get... off me!" Hakim shrieked, thrashing, trying to tear his arm free. But Zirak was rooted like a pile-driver driven fifty feet into bedrock. "You wanted what was inside me?" Zirak drove his other fist into Hakim's elbow, shattering the joint in a spray of sparks and gray marrow. "Take all of it! Choke on the trash!" The beast's chest ballooned, microscopic machines turning on one another in algorithmic chaos to organize ten thousand tons of digital rust. Carapace split open, fissures spider-webbing across the torso to leak blinding amber steam. "Laleh!" Zirak roared over the screech of tearing metal. "Take the shot!" She sprang without delay. There was no confusion, no delay. The moment the command left his mouth, she cleared the distance in a single, blurring leap. Her twin daggers had fused into a single lance of condensed crimson heat, trailing an arc of superheated brilliance across the dim hall. "For every lie you fed him!" she snarled, descending from above like an executioner's blade. She drove the lance straight through the cracked seam on the chest plate. The impact sounded like a cathedral bell cracking in two. The superheated strike ignited the calcified sludge Zirak had pumped into the core. A concussive shockwave blew outward, stripping the remaining banners from the walls and knocking the surviving, wide-eyed Vanguard guards flat on their backs. The brute was blasted backward, skipping twice across the floor before slamming against the marble pedestal at the hall's center. Silence crashed over the ruin. Hakim tried to push himself up. He raised a hand toward the ceiling, but there were no razor talons left. No liquid armor. His skin was gray, desiccated, crumbling away into dry, inert ash with every shuddering breath. The grand mastermind, the architect of a dozen quiet slaughters, looked like nothing more than an ancient, withered husk shivering in the dirt. "My... design..." Hakim rasped, his jaw crumbling into flakes of gray powder. "The ascension... the Spire was mine..." Zirak walked over, stopping just inches from the withered face. He left the halberd dismissed. He reached down, picked up the broken wooden handle of an old cleaning mop lying among the debris, and used the blunt end to push Hakim's chin flat against the ground. "You aren't an architect," Zirak said coldly, looking down at the broken old man with neither pity nor rage, only total dismissal. "You're just clutter. And I'm off the clock." Hakim's eyes dimmed, and with a final, rattling sigh, the rest of his torso collapsed into a heap of dry, harmless gray powder, scattering across the drafty tiles. Behind them, Arslan Ghori hauled himself upright against the shattered pillar, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief as he stared at the scruffy janitor standing over the ashes of the Spire's greatest nightmare. Laleh sprinted over, ignoring the dust, ignoring the watching guards. She threw her arms around Zirak's neck with bruising force, burying her face into his bruised shoulder. "You idiot. You absolute, stubborn bastard. If you ever pull a trick like that again, I'll kill you myself." Zirak stiffened, his instincts screaming at him to shove her away, to hide behind a prickly retort. But he couldn't. His alloy ribs thrummed quietly against her chest. Slowly, awkwardly, he wrapped an arm around her back, his palm curling into her jacket. "I had it handled," he muttered, his ear burning hot. Before she could answer, the amber glow of the hall died completely, replaced by a harsh, blinding crimson strobe. A siren wailed from the ceiling, tearing through the quiet with mechanical fury.
