Eminent Domain

Corvin’s last wheeze echoed in the grimy pipe shaft. “Pointless gesture, scavenger. The tanks topped off an hour ago. The squadrons took flight before you breached the shaft. Your gutters are already on fire.”
Rivo didn’t dignify the dying man with a reply. He ripped his hand from the brass wheel, the lingering warmth of the deed fading. The Sump-Ward wasn’t burning yet, but the distant, low thrum in the air was distinct, a growing tremor that vibrated through the very slagcrete of the city. Bomber fleets.
“He’s right,” Ciana’s voice cut through the thrum, sharp with a rare tremor of panic. She stood a few feet away, her elegant suit smudged with dust, her usually pristine expression now a tight mask of dread. “My brother wasn’t useless after all. He ensured the bombers launched the moment the fuel lines were topped. They’re coming for the Sump-Ward, Rivo. Now.”
Basto, hunched by the broken manifold, coughed. “Then we run, Rivo. We get to the Vettor transport. We get out.” His gaze flicked from Rivo to Ciana, then to the gaping hole in the shaft wall where the board's guards had been pulverized.
Rivo turned, his eyes scanning the fractured concrete. Run. The word tasted like ash. He had spent twenty years running. Not anymore. He looked at Ciana, then at Basto, who was already scrambling to his feet, trying to ignore the metallic tang of fear that now hung in the air.
[URGENT. URBAN RENEWAL PROTOCOL INITIATED. LOCALIZED DEFENSES REQUIRED. DEED TARGETS IDENTIFIED: SUMP-WARD BLAST-DOOR ARRAY – SECTOR J-7, J-8, K-7, K-8.]
[SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: ACTIVATE DEFENSIVE CHOKEPOINTS. REWARD: TEMPORARY INVULNERABILITY PROTOCOL. FAILURE: DEED LIQUIDATION, TOTAL URBAN RENEWAL.]
“Blast doors,” Rivo murmured, the words feeling foreign on his tongue. He knew the Sump-Ward’s internal defenses, the heavy, reinforced bulkheads meant to seal off sectors during flash floods or major structural collapses. They were old, rusted, and rarely deployed. No one bothered to maintain them in the lower wards.
“Those things haven’t been sealed in decades,” Basto scoffed, wiping sweat from his brow. “They’d barely hold back a stiff breeze, let alone a Vettor bombardment. And they’re spread across the lower quadrant.”
Ciana’s comm-unit buzzed, a frantic, staticky voice spitting out commands. She listened for a moment, her face paling further. “Forget the doors for a moment. My sources say corporate loyalists, the ‘Ironclad Vanguard,’ are already deploying. They’re a vanguard. Their job isn’t to fight you, Rivo. It’s to mark targets for the bombers. Luminous paint, tracking beacons. They’ll be everywhere, painting the Sump-Ward red.”
“So, they’re coming to our home to draw circles on it,” Rivo stated, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. “We greet them.” He slammed a hand against the grimy shaft wall. “Basto, Ciana, we move. We need to reach the Sump-Ward central plaza. It’s the highest point in our territory, and it’s where most of these blast doors converge.”
They scrambled through the labyrinthine maintenance tunnels, the distant thrum of the bomber fleet growing louder, more urgent. As they emerged into the rain-slicked, open-air platforms of the Sump-Ward’s middle levels, the air raid sirens began to wail, a mournful, piercing shriek that cut through the perpetual drizzle.
Below, in the murky canyons between collapsing buildings, figures moved. Dark, armored shapes, wielding long-barreled rifles, their scopes glowing with infrared. The Vanguard marksmen. They were already spreading out, moving with practiced efficiency, painting luminescent markers on structural supports, on residential blocks, on the very path Rivo intended to take.
“Snipers,” Ciana hissed, pressing herself against a corroded strut. “At least three teams, covering the main thoroughfares. You won’t reach the plaza without crossing their kill zones.”
Rivo ignored her. He saw a blast door, a massive, rusted steel plate embedded in the side of an old power conduit building, its hydraulic seals groaning with disuse. It was at the far end of a long, exposed walkway, directly under the crosshairs of a marksman perched on a water tower.
[TARGET: SUMP-WARD BLAST-DOOR ARRAY, SECTOR J-7.]
“I need that door,” Rivo said, pushing off the strut. He sprinted, a blur of motion through the downpour, ignoring Ciana’s panicked shout. Laser sights flared, red dots dancing around him, then locking on. Rifle fire erupted, the crack of rounds echoing off the dripping walls. Bullets ricocheted, chipping chunks from the walkway. Rivo weaved, using ruined market stalls and precariously balanced debris for cover, pushing past the terror, focusing only on the blast door.
He reached it, sliding to a halt, his hand slamming against the cold, corroded metal plate. “Mine!”

[BLAST-DOOR ARRAY J-7 INITIATED. CHOKEPOINT ACTIVATED.]
With a grinding roar, the ancient blast door began to descend, its hydraulics screaming in protest, rusty gears churning. It wasn’t fast, but it was moving. The sniper on the water tower, momentarily surprised, adjusted his aim.
“There’s another one!” Basto yelled, pointing across the plaza to a similar door on a ventilation shaft. “And more shock-troops are flanking us!”
Rivo saw them, a squad of five, moving swiftly along a narrow, elevated pipe-bridge, painting markers as they advanced. They were converging on his position, cutting off his route to the next blast door. He couldn’t run the gauntlet again, not with so many. But he didn’t need to run. He had other assets.
He pulled out his portfolio of deeds, the parchment scrolls materializing instantly in his hand. He flipped through them, his eyes scanning the familiar municipal designations: a runoff gap, an exterior ladder, a sewer grate. They were all within a hundred-meter radius of the approaching squad. His lips twisted into a cruel smile.
“You want to paint the Sump-Ward, you corporate ghouls?” Rivo shouted over the klaxons. “Then come on. Let’s see what you really own.”
He slammed his hand on the parchment for the runoff gap, then the iron steps, then the sewer grate, triggering them in rapid sequence.

The air around the approaching unit shimmered with an invisible, unyielding legal barrier. The lead scout, mid-stride across the runoff gap Rivo owned, suddenly found his footing vanish. The very ground beneath him, a mere three-foot span, simply *ceased* to support him. He plunged through, not into a hole, but into nothingness, his screams cut short as he was crushed by the localized, hyper-dense implosion of the legally nullified space. His armor crumpled like foil, his body smeared into the muck below.
Another scout, scaling the exterior iron steps that Rivo had claimed, felt the metal ladder twist beneath him, not from damage, but from an impossible, legal torsion. The steel warped, pulling apart with a groaning shriek, the bolts tearing from the wall as the frame inverted, flinging him into the chasm below. He didn’t even have time to scream.
The remaining three mercenaries, now clustered in a desperate attempt to avoid the localized environmental implosion, found themselves standing on the reinforced grate of a major sewer line. Rivo’s grate. As the system registered their presence, the heavy iron bars vibrated, then violently slammed shut, crushing their legs with the force of hydraulic presses. Bones snapped, armor groaned, and then the iron plating flipped, sending their mangled bodies tumbling into the surging, toxic currents below.
Silence returned, save for the horns and the growing thrum of the bombers. The frontline squad, the vanguard of the Vettor fleet, were wiped out, not by bullets or blades, but by paperwork. The Sump-Ward had devoured them, legally.
[SECONDARY OBJECTIVE COMPLETE. INVULNERABILITY PROTOCOL INITIATED (DURATION: 00:05:00).]
The warding hum settled deep in Rivo's ribcage, solid as cold iron. He could feel the System’s invisible shield, a temporary bubble of absolute legal protection around him. He turned to Ciana and Basto, who stared, mouths agape, at the carnage. “More blast doors. Let’s move.”
The horns intensified, climbing to a sustained scream. The sky above Gresca, already a perpetual bruise of grey and green, darkened further. Not with storm clouds, but with the monstrous, unfolding shadows of the Vettor bomber fleet, thousands of engines roaring a death knell over the Sump-Ward.
