Chapter 5 of 10

Phantom Debt

Rivo, still slick with effluent from the sewer grate, felt the absence of the city's power hum rattling his ribs. Basto Kanto, hunched over his flickering data-slate in the precarious Sump-Ward hovel, swore. “They’ll burn us alive for this, Rivo. You just severed the main artery of their pet project.” From the corner of the room, Ciana Vettor’s comm-link buzzed with a frantic, muffled stream of invective. Her face, usually a mask of predatory calm, tightened. “My ‘esteemed’ siblings, it seems, are having a collective aneurysm. The projected losses… astronomical. They’re already pulling every lever in Gresca’s underbelly to retaliate.” She met Rivo’s gaze, a glint of perverse satisfaction in her eyes. “But don’t mistake their panic for weakness. They’re cunning, those two. And they’ll find a way to make you pay, Zann.” Her words were still echoing when Rivo’s left arm, previously just numb from the fight, began to ache. It wasn’t a muscle ache, but a deep, internal corrosion, as if his very cells were dissolving. He gripped his wrist, his knuckles blanching. The skin took on a strange, mottled purplish hue, spreading rapidly from his wrist. A searing pain erupted, sharper than any blade, colder than any Sump-ice. [ERROR: REGISTRY VIOLATION DETECTED. SUB-CONDITION 7B: MAINTENANCE OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE ACCESS FAILED. FORMER DEED: Sump-Ward Drainage Gap, Sector Gamma-12. New Status: PUBLIC ACCESS DENIED THROUGH MALICIOUS INTENT.] The metallic voice resonated directly inside Rivo’s skull, a hammer blow to his consciousness. He stumbled, gasping, the pain intensifying to an unbearable pitch. The purplish blotches on his arm darkened, the flesh visibly thinning, shrinking. [PHANTOM DEBT ASSESSED: 5,000,000 CREDITS. LIQUIDATION IN 24 HOURS. PHYSICAL NECROSIS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL DEBT IS CLEARED. PRIMARY TARGET: RIGHT ARM.] Rivo cried out, a raw, involuntary sound. His right limb, previously unaffected, flared with an identical, excruciating rot. He staggered, clutching both arms, sweat beading on his forehead. The room blurred. This wasn’t just a legal penalty; it was a physical curse, devouring him from the inside. “What in the blighted hells is that?” Basto stammered, his face pale as he watched Rivo’s skin shrivel. Even Ciana’s composure fractured, a flicker of genuine alarm in her eyes. “They found a loophole,” Rivo choked out, fighting for air, the words scraping his throat. “A sub-condition. Something about public access. They’ve twisted my first deed against me. It’s draining me.” Ciana’s eyes narrowed as she watched the glowing prompt reflect in his pupils. “A malicious intent clause. Ingenious, those bastards. They probably slipped it in through an emergency city ordinance, claiming your drainage gap blockage was an act of economic terrorism, not just extortion. And now the System is carving its pound of flesh.” She paused, a glint of cold calculation replacing her fear. “There’s only one way to clear a debt like this. Another deed. A big one.” Basto, rubbing his temples, rummaged through his holographic maps. “A big deed, on short notice, that they can’t block… The High-Crossing Viaduct. It’s the primary supply line for the Iron-Skin Syndicate’s operations in the lower Sump-Ward. Heavily guarded, but vital. If you could seize a structural pier, they’d be paralyzed.” “Heavily guarded is an understatement, Kanto,” Ciana scoffed. “The Iron-Skins are armed to the teeth, and they spray-paint their territory in lead. Rivo would be minced meat before he got within a hundred meters.” “Then we create a diversion,” Rivo rasped, his voice raw. The necrosis gnawed at him, but it sharpened his focus. “A big one. Something to draw them away from the central upright.” Ciana’s lips curved into a thin, dangerous smile. “I have just the thing. A cargo transport, filled with ‘contraband’ that just happens to explode at the eastern approach. A little something to keep the Iron-Skins busy while you play urban mountaineer.” Rivo moved through the rain-slicked alleys toward the high crossing, every joint throbbing with an agonizing burn. The interface countdown to liquidation was a brutal drumbeat in his head, each tick intensifying the decay. His right limb was now a grotesque, shrunken stalk, the skin stretched taut over exposed bone. The left followed swiftly. Ciana’s diversion was a masterpiece of chaos. A deafening roar tore through the night as a Vettor-branded hauler, packed with volatile chemicals, detonated at the bridge’s approach. Flames licked at the iron girders, and syndicate enforcers shouted above. It was the cover Rivo needed. He emerged beneath the span, a shadow amid drifting smoke. The central masonry pier, a colossal stone-cast pylon encrusted with a century of Sump-grime, loomed before him. Laser sights danced across its surface from the deck above, but the Iron-Skins were too preoccupied with the inferno to notice a lone figure clinging to the slime-coated rebar. Climbing tore at him. Each flex of his necrotizing muscles burned like acid. He tasted copper and bile, scraping raw, bleeding fingers against wet mineral. The dull rot in his wrists was a constant, deafening pulse, but greedy stubbornness shoved him upward. He reached a small, relatively flat section of the pier, just high enough to clear casual patrols. With a guttural cry, Rivo slammed his right, decaying palm flat against the cold, damp mineral face. A spark caught his nerves, delivering an immediate rush of heat. [DEED ACQUIRED: High-Crossing Viaduct, Central Pier (Zone 4, Node Alpha-7).] [PHANTOM DEBT: CLEARED. NECROSIS HALTED. PHYSICAL REGENERATION IN PROGRESS.] The searing agony in his arms vanished, replaced by a dull throb. The purplish hue began to recede, the skin slowly plumping and reknitting. He slumped against the pylon, sucking air, the relief staggering. Then, a voice boomed from the deck above, amplified by a bullhorn. “So, the little rat thinks he owns my crossing now, eh? The syndicate won't pay a single credit, Zann! We’ll burn it to the ground first!” Rivo looked up, his eyes meeting the enraged gaze of a hulking man in reinforced armor, the Iron-Skin Syndicate boss, Kaelon Vox. Vox sneered, then made a sharp gesture to his men. A series of metallic clicks echoed from beneath the deck. [IMMINENT STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE DETECTED. EVACUATE IMMEDIATE VICINITY.] The warning blared as a sharp fracture split the stone. Rivo looked down to see small, blinking red lights embedded in the base of the pylon. Explosives. Kaelon Vox wasn’t bluffing. The footings buckled. A deafening roar erupted as the charges detonated, a concussion wave ripping through the Sump-Ward. The massive column groaned, then cracked in half, tearing away from the overhead structure. Rivo had barely a second to react before the entire mass of stone sheared free, plunging him down into the toxic, debris-choked waters of the lower Sump-Ward.
