Chapter 3 of 10
The Volunteer
1.3k words
A siren, long and mournful, sliced through the humming silence of the Backstage. Karys Lont slammed her fist against the console, the impact a dull thud in the confined space. “Seventy-two hours! He just shaved two days off our timeline, Zennor! That’s not a dramatic reveal, that’s a death sentence!”
Zennor Fent, adjusting the cuffs of his bullet-resistant tuxedo, hummed a soft, off-key tune. “On the contrary, Karys. It’s a magnificent escalation. The stakes have never been higher. The ticking clock, the villain’s cruel ultimatum… it’s practically Shakespearean.” He turned, an unnerving grin on his face. “And what is a good villain without an audience?”
“An audience that’s about to be torched,” Karys retorted, holstering her sonic disruptor. “We need those schematics. The broadcast grid architectural specs. They’re our only way to counter Vull’s little ‘fire sale’.”
“Precisely,” Zennor said, plucking a shimmering silk handkerchief from the air. “Which brings us to Act Two: The Grand Theft. I’ve scanned the Vexillion traffic manifests. A priority freight run, designated ‘Apex Transit’, is moving through the Mid-Levels tonight. Carrying sensitive data, I’d wager. And,” he paused, a smile spreading across his face, “I believe our friend Praxus Vull will be in attendance. A personal invitation, wouldn’t you agree?”
Karys stared at him. “You want to ambush a heavy-armored transport column, in the *Mid-Levels*, just to make Vull your unwitting co-star?”
“Co-star? No, Karys. He’s the mark. The volunteer. Every great trick needs one, preferably someone who thinks they’re too clever to be fooled.” Zennor snapped the handkerchief, and it vanished. “Consider it a dress rehearsal for The Grand Prestige. And I require a most exquisite prop.”
[Cue Lighting. Act II: The Turn]
They emerged into the shimmering, artificial twilight of the Mid-Levels’ Arclight Promenade, a canyon of towering, bio-luminescent skyscrapers that cast a perpetual neon glow. Below, sleek ground-skimmers hummed past, their exhausts smelling faintly of ozone and synthetic jasmine. The air was thick with the thrum of commerce and the distant wail of pleasure-district music. Zennor, his pristine white gloves a stark contrast to the grimy Under-Grid, leaned against a chrome street lamp. Karys, camouflaged in a hooded, kinetic-weave duster, melted into the shadows of a nearby data kiosk. She watched the street, her eyes narrowed. “Armored line approaching. Three heavy haulers, six patrol bikes. All Trust-grade security troops. And… Praxus Vull’s personal cruiser, a black Wraith-class, in the center. He’s in the lead vehicle of the main three. Right on schedule.”
“Excellent,” Zennor murmured, his voice carrying an almost imperceptible vibrato. “It’s time for his close-up.”
He stepped into the path of the oncoming vehicles, his crippled leg dragging with an exaggerated limp. He fumbled in his inner pocket, producing a single, iridescent coin. The lead armored transport, a reinforced Grav-Hauler, screeched to a halt mere feet from him, its kinetic dampeners hissing. A dozen guards in matte-black armor, their sonic rifles raised, spilled out, forming a defensive perimeter. From the Wraith-class cruiser, Praxus Vull emerged, his cyber-stitched arm glowing faintly in the neon haze. He saw Zennor, his gaze dismissive. “Move along, street filth. Or be made to.”
Zennor smiled, a wide, unsettling grin that didn’t reach his eyes. “Distinguished citizen, I assure you, I am merely searching for a lost item. Perhaps you can assist me, sir? A volunteer, if you will?” He held up the coin, then made a show of dropping it. It clinked on the permacrete, rolling towards Vull’s polished boots.
Vull squared his shoulders. “This isn’t a sideshow, cripple. Stand down.”
“But it is, sir,” Zennor insisted, tilting his head with mock deference. “A most exclusive performance, just for you. Behold!” With a flick of his wrist, Zennor snatched the coin from the ground – or rather, the illusion of the coin. The actual coin, gleaming, appeared between Vull’s fingers. The fixer recoiled, his face a mask of momentary confusion, then raw fury. “You insolent cur!”
[Action Cue. Engage Praxus Vull. Maximize Humiliation Score.]
Before Vull could react, Zennor launched into his performance. He weaved between the charging troopers with impossible grace, his limp transforming into a fluid, almost dance-like movement. He plucked a detonator from one guard's belt, swapped it with a handful of iridescent confetti, then vanished in a puff of smoke, only to reappear atop the Grav-Hauler, directly above Vull’s head. Karys, from her hidden perch, provided covering fire, her disruptor knocking out communications and disabling the perimeter bikes’ engines with precise, non-lethal bursts.
“The schematics, Praxus!” Zennor called down, his voice amplified, echoing through the promenade. “That rather drab courier case in your hand? I believe it’s my prop!”
Vull snarled, his bio-augmented arm flaring with dangerous energy. Sharp, translucent blades of pure kinetic force erupted from his gauntlet. He lunged, a blur of calculated rage. Zennor, however, didn't move to grab the case. Instead, he simply dodged, a millisecond ahead of each searing blade, his movements theatrical, almost mocking. He pirouetted on the Grav-Hauler’s roof, a blade whistling past his ear, narrowly missing a lock of dark hair. Another blade sheared a button from his lapel, but Zennor merely smiled, adjusting the now-missing buttonhole with an air of mild annoyance. He was prolonging it, drawing out the tension, not for survival, but for the perfect beat.
“A little more flair, Praxus!” Zennor taunted, leaning back as a shockwave blast gouged a crater in the roof where his head had been. “The audience is waiting for the climax!”
Vull, his face contorted in a silent scream of frustration, pressed his attack, each strike more desperate, more lethal. The valise, held tight in his left hand, was almost forgotten in his single-minded pursuit of Zennor. This was the moment. Zennor executed a perfectly timed backflip, landing just behind Vull as a blade sliced through the air where he’d been. Before Vull could recover, Zennor's gloved hand darted out, not towards the valise, but towards Vull’s wrist. It was a feint, a whisper-light touch that drew Vull’s attention for a fraction of a second. As Vull jerked his arm away, Zennor’s other hand, moving with impossible speed, plucked the case from his grasp.
And then, with another flourish, Zennor produced a decoy attache entirely. This one, shimmering with an ethereal glow, burst open. Not technical diagrams, but a cascade of intricate, clockwork doves, their tiny wings whirring, soared into the neon sky, circling the infuriated Praxus Vull before dispersing into sparkling dust. The crowd of terrified onlookers, who had been frozen in place, gasped.
[Flawless Execution. Prestige Score: Maximum.]
[Reward: Infinite Top-Hat. A truly bottomless receptacle for the most discerning showman. May consume incoming threats and produce any required prop. No strings attached. Literally.]
Zennor, now holding the true hard-shell case, bowed deeply. “Thank you for your assistance, kind sir. And do accept this small token of my appreciation.” He gestured to the vanishing doves. “A little something to remember me by.”
Vull watched the last glimmer of the mechanical doves vanish, then his gaze snapped to Zennor. The initial confusion, the rage, slowly gave way to a chilling recognition. His eyes, cold as obsidian, traced the exaggerated limp, the theatrical mannerisms, the white gloves. “Fent…” he rasped, the name a venomous whisper. “You wretched, blacklisted cripple. You’re alive. You’re *still* playing your little games.” The subdermal lines on his arm pulsed brighter, a dangerous, crimson hue. “I remember your flair. This isn’t over, illusionist. I will personally ensure your final act is a very real incineration.”
Zennor merely tipped his newly manifested, impossibly deep, black top-hat, the brim seeming to swallow the very light around it. “Only if you can catch me, Praxus. And the show has only just begun.” He vanished in another puff of smoke, leaving Vull roaring in frustration as Karys, having disabled the last remaining security skimmer, melted back into the shadows. The newly acquired top-hat felt heavy, yet strangely weightless, on Zennor’s head, a promise of wonders yet to come.
