Chapter 1 of 10

The Opening Act

1.1k words

The air in the derelict subway car tasted like rust and forgotten dreams. Zennor Fent slumped on a torn vinyl seat, his spine crooked, his hands—once famed for their deft grace—now twisted and shaking. Above, through the grime-streaked viewport, the city’s kinetic spires hummed, a constant, mocking reminder of a world that had no use for a crippled illusionist. Three figures, etched in the harsh glow of their lumen-sticks, materialized from the shadows of the Under-Grid tunnel. Their Vexillion Trust patrol uniforms, usually pristine, showed smears of tunnel grease along the hems. The squad leader, a brute with a facial graft that pulsed with faint indigo light, stopped before Zennor, holding a heavy-gauge carbine casually at his hip. A silver tag on his collar read *Torvin*. Two younger guards flanked him, their sidearms tracking Zennor's chest. “Fent,” the squad leader's voice rumbled, amplified by his resonance graft. “The Trust has exhausted its patience. Your accrued debt for… ‘unauthorized theatrical performances’… stands at five hundred thousand kredits. Unpayable, wouldn’t you agree?” Zennor managed a weak, rattling cough. His gaze, usually sharp, now drifted aimlessly, feigning a pathetic surrender. “G-gentlemen, please. A man needs to eat. My… my art… it’s all I have left.” His voice was a thin, reedy thing, barely audible above the distant rumble of the Under-Grid’s remaining power conduits. The officer scoffed, the sound grating. “Art? You call that street-side charade ‘art’? The Trust calls it revenue drain. And now, it calls for your termination.” He leveled his barrel. The two recruits followed suit, aim locked on Zennor’s ribs. The metallic click of their safeties disengaging echoed unnaturally loud in the confined space. Cold sweat pricked Zennor’s collar. A grim finish approached, months of scavenging brought to a sudden terminus. A flicker of defiance, brief and desperate, ignited in his eyes. He’d lived his life on stage, and even in death, he craved an audience. He craved… something more than this squalid end. [Overture: The Pledge. Cue Spotlight.] An unseen spotlight settled over him, bringing sudden, razor-sharp stillness. The air thickened, charged with a strange, anticipatory hum. A whisper, not from his own mind, but from something vast and ancient, coiled around his thoughts: *The act has begun. Your role: The Shivering Mark. Your task: The Sleight Snatch. Do not break character. Do not reveal the secret. The routine demands mastery.* His crippled fingers, despite their spasms, prickled with a sharp warmth. An old instinct, long dormant, stirred. “Please…” Zennor whimpered, his voice cracking on cue. He held up his shaking palms in surrender. His gaze dropped to the squad leader's belt, where magnetized battery magazines hung exposed. The cue was set. He had to lift them. His movements were a blur of calculated helplessness. As the squad leader stepped closer, nudging Zennor’s coat with the muzzle, Zennor flinched in apparent terror. His left hand brushed the man's hip. Between breaths, his forefinger and thumb pinched the clasp. The magnetic latch gave way with a muted pop, the battery slipping into his palm. He didn’t even register the transfer; it was pure, reflexive muscle memory. His right hand flailed wide, drawing the glance of the guard on the left. As the guard watched the sleeve flutter, Zennor’s middle finger flicked against the man's harness. A second latch released. The cylinder dropped into his cuff. His hand returned to his chest, clutching his shirt in feigned panic, while the third guard stayed fixated on his leader. “Any last words, Fent?” Torvin growled, his finger curling around the trigger. The recruits shifted weight, boots scraping the iron floor. Three muzzles, three points of inevitable light. Zennor coughed again, a wet, pitiful sound, but in the depth of his eyes, a spark of pure, unadulterated mischief danced. This was his stage. This was his show. “Just this,” Zennor rasped, his voice barely a whisper, yet carrying an odd, resonant quality. “Never let a trick spoil a good reveal.” The brute frowned, baffled. “What are you babbling about?” He squeezed. *Click.* An empty metallic snap. Nothing. He pulled again. *Click.* The recruits followed his lead, yanking their triggers in unison. *Click. Click.* Dead pins struck hollow brass across the line. Their faces, moments ago grim with murderous intent, twisted into comical masks of disbelief. [Flawless execution. Character sustained. The audience is captivated.] [Reward: The Performer's Gauntlets. The Stage Magician's Vestments.] A shimmering light, soft as moonlight, enveloped Zennor. His tattered coat and grimy trousers dissolved, replaced by a tailored suit of midnight-black wool that swallowed ambient glare. The fabric itself felt dense, resilient. A pair of pristine white gloves, supple as a second skin, materialized on his hands. The moment they settled, a profound warmth spread through his gnarled fingers, a cascade of forgotten sensation. The tremors vanished. His hands straightened, tendons knitting, muscles reforming. He flexed them, testing the newfound dexterity. The gloves were reshaping his grip into clean precision. He slipped the stolen power packs into his pockets with an effortless flick. The squad froze, jaws slack, dry hardware dangling in limp hands. “What in the… what kind of trick is this?” Torvin stammered, his bark cracking. Zennor smiled then, a wide, predatory grin that transformed his face. The pathetic, trembling victim was gone, replaced by something entirely new, entirely terrifying. “Just the opening act, gentlemen,” he purred, his voice now rich, deep, and utterly captivating. “The Grand Prestige is yet to come.” From the deepest shadows of the subway car, where the light dared not touch, a figure stepped forward. She was lean, clad in dark, functional armor, a heavy repeater slung easily across her back. In her hand, a small, glowing holocam whirred, its lens retracting. It had captured everything. Her gaze locked onto Zennor’s. A brass press pass dangled from her rig, stamped with the name *Karys Lont*. She raised a heavy rifle, training its iron sights straight at his sternum. “That,” she stated, her voice abrasive, yet laced with grudging admiration, “was quite the performance, Fent. A real showstopper. And I recorded every impossible second. Now, how about we talk about making a real spectacle?” The Trust will be your unwitting props.” She took another step, a predator meeting another, and the gun never wavered. “Because if you can do *that* to three enforcers, you and I are going to burn this city down.”
