Chapter 8 of 10

Resuscitating the Nightmare

The high-pitched hum scraped through Kavrin’s teeth, a pressure vibration that pushed against his temples. Jurok, an asymmetrical bulk of weeping lesions and budding orifices, lay slumped against the foundation stones. The dark puddle beneath him crept into the grit of the dirt floor. Kavrin closed the distance, stone grit grinding under his boots as the cellar whine sharpened. He ignored the pitiful whimpers of Jurok’s children, still tethered to their pillars, their forms shuddering in unison with the air’s vibration. He dropped down beside the elder, knees sinking into damp soil. The man's forearms ended in shredded meat where teeth had gnawed through gristle down to yellow tendon. Blackish seepage trickled over cold granite with every sluggish contraction. The air intensified, a high-frequency scream that threatened to shatter his teeth. There was no time for finesse, no room for disgust. Only the task remained. Kavrin ripped a length of his tattered grave-shroud free, tearing the rough linen with a savage tug. He pressed it hard against the ruined joints to block the flow, but the pressure found no solid purchase. The flesh was too soft, too fluid, constantly reshaping itself under his touch. Jurok’s distorted skull, bristling with stunted fingers, tilted sideways. Several mismatched eyes rolled back, white and wet, as split lips along his throat began to keen. “No…let it end…” a gurgling voice erupted from a throat embedded in Jurok’s shoulder. “Please…the quiet…let it come…” Kavrin ignored the pleas. The beast’s essence, churning in his gut, roared with the urgency of the valley’s impending doom. He felt the echo of that vast, ancient mind, a primal scream of self-preservation. Jurok’s life, as vile as it was, was a lynchpin. Kavrin reached for the oil lamp he’d placed beside the crypt entrance, its flame a paltry shield against the encroaching gloom. He tilted the lamp, soaking a fresh strip of grave-shroud in the lamp oil, then held it to the flame. It caught, burning with a weak, sputtering orange. “The quiet is a lie,” Kavrin said, voice dry as tallow. He pinned one ragged joint, the skin shifting like grease beneath his fingers. Jurok’s torso heaved, secondary spurs of knuckle scraping the air. A toothy aperture near the elbow snapped shut on empty air. He ignored it, his gaze fixed on the crude cauterizing torch. He brought the flame down, not hesitating. A hiss, like water on a hot stone, erupted as the fire met flesh. The smell of burning tissue, acrid and sickening, filled the crypt, momentarily overpowering the metallic tang of blood. Jurok screamed through half a dozen throats, each raw opening pitching to a different discordant shriek. His body arched, straining against the chains, though the iron links now bit above the butchered joints, digging straight into swollen, blistered forearms. Kavrin held the flame steady, his own breathing shallow, watching the dark wound pucker and seal. He hauled the other mangled arm into the flame, repeating the sear. Jurok’s screams became a continuous, wavering wail, a sound that would haunt Kavrin’s waking hours. Sweat ran into Kavrin’s lashes, stoked by the stench of scorched fat and the drill-like screech boring into his inner ear. When both wounds were seared shut, dark and angry, Kavrin tossed the sputtering torch aside. Jurok’s body, though still quivering, was no longer actively bleeding. His breathing arrived in thin, shallow gasps through an aperture nestled beneath his collarbone. The detonation-whine was still there, a constant, grating presence, demanding faster action. Kavrin remembered the beatings by the timber wagons, the casual kicks, and how easy it had been to look away back then. Now he tightened his jaw. *You don't get the grave yet.* He positioned himself over Jurok’s chest, the flesh a lumpy terrain of eyes and developing digits. Finding a stable point was a challenge. One of Jurok’s eyes, milky and half-closed, peered up at him. “Let me…rest…” it pleaded weakly. Kavrin pressed down, hard, his palms flat against a section of smooth, taut skin that served as the ribcage's center. The flesh was spongy, resilient. He counted, a silent rhythm against the frantic beat of the impending explosion. One, two, three… compress. Release. One, two, three… compress. Each compression pushed a sickening slosh through Jurok’s amorphous body. A gurgle, a cough, a shudder. Kavrin felt the faint, stuttering beat beneath his hands, a desperate flutter of life that refused to yield. He continued, an automaton of necessity. The air in the crypt still shrieked, but it felt… steadier. The frequency, while still deafening, seemed to hold, not escalate further. He was buying precious seconds. After what felt like an eternity, but was likely only minutes, Jurok’s breath deepened, a rough, wet sound that was undeniably more robust. The bloated neck twitched, and the primary throat gulped down a ragged draft of cellar air. The detonation-whine began to recede, very subtly at first, then more pronounced, pulling back from the brink of oblivion. Kavrin slumped, his muscles aching, a thin film of grave-dirt adhering to his sweat-damp skin. He took a moment, letting the immediate crisis pass. Then, from his satchel, he pulled out a small pouch. It contained the rich, loamy earth from the consecrated heart of the graveyard, earth imbued with centuries of slumber and the ancient, binding will of the land. He packed the soil firmly across the seared arm stumps, fashioning a thick, clinging plaster to hold the split flesh together. The grave-dirt felt cool against Jurok’s burning flesh, a stark contrast to the recent fire. Then, Kavrin opened his own mouth. The spectral, glowing ink, the essence of the beast and Sathid’s infused blood, coated his tongue. He spat. Not a graceful arc, but a deliberate, thick gobbet of shimmering, bioluminescent fluid. It landed directly on Jurok’s chest, spreading like a living stain across the lumpy, mutating flesh. Jurok bucked violently, every tendon snapping rigid against the stone. The glowing ink pulsed, then began to sink into the skin, as if absorbed by thirsty pores. The effect was immediate, terrifying. Jurok’s entire chest began to swell, stretching taut and translucent. The smaller eyes embedded in his flesh blinked rapidly, then dissolved into the expanding surface. The skin thinned, becoming almost membranous, revealing the dark, convoluted veins beneath. The expansion accelerated, like an unholy bloom. With a wet, tearing sound, the chest cavity split, not a wound, but a deliberate opening. It parted like a grotesque flower, folding back layers of flesh and bone, exposing a cavernous, hollow space within. The cavity pulsed with a soft, hungry light, a void of organic architecture. It was a matrix, a biological receptacle, utterly empty, and utterly desperate for something to fill its gaping expanse. It was ready for the beast’s brain.
