Chapter 39: Julian's Jealousy
1.0k words
Cool air, scented faintly with expensive perfume and the sharp tang of fresh paint, enveloped Elara as she stepped into the bustling gallery. Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead, casting a warm glow on vibrant canvases and polished marble. Tonight, her own piece wasn't on display, but she felt a familiar thrill amidst the creative energy.
Scanning the diverse crowd, she spotted Julian by the far wall. He was a stark, compelling figure even among the city's elite, his dark suit perfectly tailored, a half-empty champagne flute held loosely in his hand. His gaze, usually so controlled, flickered towards her and a subtle, possessive warmth entered his eyes.
Approaching him, a genuine smile touched her lips. "Lost in thought, Mr. Vance?" she teased, her voice soft against the murmuring crowd.
He offered her a faint smile, a rare softening of his usually stern features. "Observing. This is… quite the spectacle." His eyes swept over the art, lingering on a particularly abstract sculpture. "Are you enjoying yourself?"
"Immensely," she replied, her eyes bright. "It's inspiring. So many different voices, all trying to say something important." Her gaze drifted, catching on a familiar face near a striking triptych.
Recognizing Liam Thorne, a renowned abstract expressionist whose work she admired, Elara felt a pull. He was a contemporary master, known for his bold strokes and controversial themes. An opportunity to pick his brain about technique felt too good to pass up.
Moving away from Julian, she navigated through small clusters of people, her heart thrumming with anticipation. Liam, a man with a shock of silver hair and intense, intelligent eyes, was currently animatedly discussing a piece with a small group. She waited patiently for a break in the conversation.
Soon, he looked up, his gaze meeting hers. A smile, easy and charming, spread across his face. "Elara Reid! What a pleasant surprise. I remember your piece at the city's emerging artists exhibition last year. Truly captivating."
Warmth bloomed in Elara's chest. "Thank you, Mr. Thorne. Your words mean a lot." His recognition was validation, a whisper of hope in her artistic journey.
Liam leaned in slightly, his voice dropping, drawing her further into conversation. "Your use of shadow and light, particularly in the cityscape, it's masterful. Tell me, what was your inspiration for that series? I sensed a profound melancholy, yet also a powerful resilience."
Caught up in the insightful questions, Elara found herself discussing her process, her influences, the emotional core of her work, with an intensity she rarely shared. She gesticulated, her hands painting shapes in the air, her eyes alight with passion. Liam listened intently, his head cocked, occasionally interjecting with a perceptive comment or a challenging thought.
Minutes stretched into what felt like an hour. Elara forgot the buzzing gallery, the clinking glasses, even Julian. Her world narrowed to the fascinating exchange with Liam, a kindred spirit who understood the language of art in a way few others did.
Across the room, Julian watched. His initial amusement at her enthusiasm had curdled into something far darker. He saw her animated gestures, the way she laughed at something Liam said, the easy intimacy of their conversation. The artist, known not just for his talent but also for his flirtatious reputation, had Elara's undivided attention.
Julian’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping in his cheek. He watched Liam lean closer, saw Elara's eyes sparkle. A cold knot formed in his stomach. This wasn't just a professional discussion; it felt too familiar, too personal. His grip on the champagne flute became vice-like, the delicate stem groaning under the pressure.
Disbelief warred with a simmering rage. Had he not made his intentions clear? Was this how she behaved the moment his back was turned? The thought ignited a possessive fire within him, burning away his usual cool composure.
Liam reached out, his hand briefly touching Elara's arm as he emphasized a point. That small, innocent gesture snapped something inside Julian. His vision narrowed, the other patrons fading into a blurry background. Only Elara and Liam remained, highlighted in an infuriating spotlight.
Moving with a predatory grace, Julian began to cut a path through the throng. His expression was stony, his eyes fixed on their target. People instinctively parted, sensing the dangerous aura he now radiated. He reached them just as Liam was asking Elara about her future projects, his voice smooth and inviting.
"Elara," Julian's voice cut through their conversation, low and gravelly, laced with an unmistakable edge. He didn't raise it, but the sudden chill in the air was palpable. He didn't even glance at Liam.
Elara started, her head snapping towards him, her animated expression faltering. She saw the storm in his eyes, the rigid line of his shoulders, and a jolt of alarm went through her. "Julian? Is everything alright?"
His hand closed around her wrist, firm and unyielding. The gentle warmth of Liam's touch was instantly replaced by Julian's powerful grip, a stark declaration of ownership. He pulled her slightly, an unspoken command in the movement.
Liam, sensing the abrupt shift in atmosphere, cleared his throat awkwardly. "Ah, Mr. Vance. We were just discussing…"
Ignoring Liam completely, Julian's eyes bored into Elara. His voice was barely a whisper, meant for her ears alone, yet it vibrated with suppressed fury. "Come with me. Now." He didn't wait for her consent, tugging her away from the renowned artist, his grip a silent promise of an impending storm.
He led her to a secluded alcove, shielded by a towering sculpture, its abstract form mirroring the turmoil in his chest. Releasing her wrist, he caged her against the wall with his body, his hands braced on either side of her head. His eyes, usually a calm, deep brown, now smoldered with an unfamiliar heat.
Elara’s breath hitched. She had never seen him like this, so raw, so undisguised in his emotions. A flicker of fear, mixed with a strange, intoxicating thrill, ran down her spine. "Julian, what is this? I was just talking to Liam Thorne about art."
His voice was a low growl, barely audible above the distant murmur of the crowd, yet it resonated deep within her. "I don't care what you were talking about. Stay away from him, Elara. You're *my* fiancée."
