Chapter 21: A Father's Glimpse

815 words

A restless current pulled at Adrian. Desk reports lay untouched, the market data blurring before his eyes. His usual focus had fractured since the Vance incident. He kept replaying Elara's quick thinking, her defiant gaze. Driving aimlessly, he found himself near the city's older district. A flash of memory surfaced: Elara mentioning a park, a place Leo loved. He rarely gave in to impulse. Today felt different. He steered his car, a sleek black sedan, towards the green expanse. Parking on a shaded street, Adrian stepped out. Laughter drifted on the warm breeze. Children's shouts. The air smelled of freshly cut grass and summer. Bright sunshine dappled through the oak leaves. A sea of green spread before him, dotted with families and picnickers. He felt strangely out of place, a dark suit amidst vibrant casual wear. His gaze swept the playground. A boy with bright, almost startling blue eyes chased a red ball. The child stumbled, giggled, then scrambled back up. Adrian’s breath hitched. Leo. Undeniably Leo. The same unruly brown hair, the same boundless energy he’d seen in brief glimpses. Adrian stopped dead. A strange warmth bloomed in his chest. It wasn't pity, or even just curiosity. It was a pull, an insistent tug he couldn't explain. He watched Leo, mesmerized. The boy was building a lopsided sandcastle, his tongue poking out in concentration. A small, perfect hand smoothed wet sand. Leo glanced up, scanning the park. His eyes, those vibrant blue eyes, seemed to pause on Adrian for a split second. A wave of something akin to recognition, a childish wonder, flashed across Leo's face before he resumed his work. Adrian felt an urge, sharp and unexpected. He moved towards an ice cream vendor, his steps deliberate. A cone, chocolate swirled with vanilla. He paid, his fingers brushing the cold wrapper. Approaching the sandbox, Adrian hesitated. What was he doing? This was insane. But something held him there, rooted. Leo looked up again, his expression shy but curious. His small nose crinkled. Adrian knelt, offering the cone. "For you," he said, his voice softer than he intended. "Looks like hard work, that castle." Leo's eyes widened. He glanced around, as if searching for a hidden parent. Seeing none, he reached out, his tiny fingers carefully taking the cone. "Thank you," he mumbled, a smudge of sand on his cheek. A small smile touched Adrian's lips. He stood, feeling an unfamiliar lightness. He hadn't seen Leo this close, not without Elara present, not like this. There was a raw innocence, a pure joy that disarmed him. He walked away, leaving Leo happily licking the melting ice cream. A part of Adrian wanted to stay, to watch the boy, but he knew he shouldn't. Not yet. The connection, however fleeting, felt sacred. Elara rounded the corner of the path, a basket of freshly baked muffins in her hand. She'd promised Leo a treat after his playdate. Her heart lurched, then seized in her chest. Adrian. Kneeling by the sandbox. Handing Leo an ice cream cone. Her breath caught. He wasn't supposed to be here. This was *her* secret place, *their* son's haven. Elara ducked behind a large oak tree, pressing herself against its rough bark. She watched, unseen. Adrian stood, a faint, almost imperceptible smile on his face as Leo took the ice cream. His movements were gentle. His gaze, usually so sharp and calculating in the boardroom, was soft, almost tender, as he watched Leo's small fingers grip the cone. That brief, unguarded moment. That innocent exchange. It stole her breath away. Elara felt a hot sting behind her eyes. A pang, sharp and deep, twisted in her stomach. Adrian didn't know. He had no idea this small boy, this child he was treating to an ice cream, was his own son. He was so close. So incredibly, tragically close to everything he'd lost, to everything he was missing. A future he didn't know existed, a connection he had yet to fully feel. Her hand flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. The longing was an ache. It was a beautiful, devastating tableau of what could be, what *should* be, and what, for now, remained just out of reach. The weight of her secret felt heavier than ever. Adrian turned, his back to her, and walked away from Leo. He disappeared through the park gates, leaving Elara hidden, her heart fracturing with a bittersweet pain. He had tasted a sliver of fatherhood, unknowingly. And she had watched it all unfold, powerless to bridge the chasm. Leo, oblivious, continued to enjoy his unexpected treat, a smear of chocolate on his cheek. He looked up, searching for the kind stranger, then shrugged and focused back on his melting dessert. Elara knew she had to keep moving, keep the charade alive, for all their sakes. But the image of Adrian's gentle smile would haunt her for days.
