Chapter 27 of 50

Elias's Desperate Plea

948 words

Screaming, Elara felt her throat burn, her voice a ragged tear in the sudden silence. Her chest heaved, each breath a painful gasp. Tears, hot and furious, streamed down her face, blurring the edges of the luxurious room. Staring at Elias, she saw his face, typically a fortress of control, crumble. A flicker of something raw, something akin to agony, crossed his features before he masked it again with a tight jaw. "How could you?" she choked out, her voice barely a whisper now, thick with unshed grief and betrayal. "How could you do this to me? To Lily?" He stood unmoving, a statue carved from regret. His silence was deafening, a heavy blanket smothering the air between them. Her accusation hung, sharp and brittle. "Answer me!" Elara shrieked, a fresh wave of fury surging. She took a stumbling step forward, her hand instinctively reaching out as if to strike him, then falling uselessly to her side. "You lied! You manipulated! You stole my choices!" Pain sliced through her. Every memory of their tender moments together, every shared laugh with Lily, now felt tainted, a cruel performance. He had orchestrated it all, every single moment. Elias finally stirred. His shoulders, usually broad and confident, seemed to slump. His eyes, fixed on her, held an unfamiliar depth of anguish. He looked utterly broken. "Elara," he began, his voice rough, barely audible. He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "I know. I know I hurt you. I never meant to." "Never meant to?" she scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Every single action was intentional, Elias! You planned this! You knew!" He closed his eyes for a brief moment, a muscle twitching in his jaw. When they opened again, they were glazed, distant, as if looking into a painful past. "You don't understand," he murmured, his gaze falling to the floor. "You couldn't possibly understand the fear, the desperation..." Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. "What fear? What desperation, Elias? You're a powerful man! You could have done anything, but you chose to deceive me!" He raised his head, his eyes meeting hers, full of a torment she'd never witnessed. "It wasn't about power, Elara. It was about protection. It was about Lily." "Protection?" she echoed, incredulous. "You tore apart her life! You tore apart *my* life!" "I had to," he insisted, his voice gaining a desperate edge. "When I found out about her... about you... my world turned upside down. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think straight." He took a hesitant step towards her, his hand reaching out, then pulling back. "Lily... she's everything to me. My second chance. After... after everything else." "What 'everything else'?" Elara demanded, her anger momentarily dulled by a flicker of confusion at his raw anguish. She had never seen this side of him. Never. Elias ran a hand through his hair, disheveling it, a gesture of profound distress. His usual composure had vanished, replaced by a man on the brink. "My first family," he whispered, the words barely audible, ripped from some dark recess of his soul. "My wife... my son. They were... they were everything." Elara's breath hitched. A cold dread seeped into her. She remembered whispers, rumors, but she had dismissed them as idle gossip. Now, faced with his shattered demeanor, it felt terrifyingly real. "A car accident," he continued, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, yet radiating an unbearable pain. "Years ago. They were gone. Just like that. In an instant." He clenched his fists, knuckles white, his body stiffening as if reliving the trauma. "One moment, I had them. The next... nothing. Emptiness. A void that never truly healed." "I tried to move on," he said, his eyes distant. "I buried myself in work, in building an empire. But the silence... the absence... it was always there. A constant reminder of what I'd lost." When he looked at her again, his eyes pleaded for understanding, for something more than just condemnation. "Then I found out about Lily. My daughter. A piece of them, a piece of *me*, still alive. A miracle I never thought I'd get." "But she was with me!" Elara countered, the pain of his past loss warring with her own fresh betrayal. "She was happy! You could have approached me, Elias! You could have told me!" He shook his head, a single, agonizing tear tracing a path down his cheek. "I wanted to. God, I wanted to. But... I saw you. So fiercely protective. So independent. And I saw Lily, thriving, happy." "I remembered the legal battles after the accident," he continued, his voice a broken rasp. "The media circus. The vultures. Everything that could possibly go wrong, did. I couldn't stand the thought of exposing her to that." "You thought I'd deny you?" she asked, a fresh wave of hurt washing over her. "That I'd keep her from her biological father?" "I didn't know what you'd do!" he cried out, his voice cracking. "I was terrified! What if you fought me? What if I lost her in some legal battle? What if the world found out and tried to take her, too?" His hand shot out, gripping her arm, his fingers digging in. His eyes, raw and bloodshot, fixed on hers, conveying a desperation so profound it made her shiver. "I couldn't risk it. Not again. After what happened to my first family... I couldn't lose another child."
