Chapter 34: Close to Exposure

710 words

A cold dread tightened Arthur Vance's chest. He felt it like a physical noose, cinching tighter with every passing hour. The security sweep had been thorough, too thorough. He'd barely managed to retrieve his phone from his desk, the one used for encrypted messages, before the IT team descended. They hadn't found the listening device in Caden’s office yet, but it was only a matter of time. He knew it. Panic clawed at him. The investigation into the stock manipulation was closing in. Caden and Elara were relentless. They worked in tandem, their minds a dangerous synergy he hadn’t anticipated. His carefully constructed network was unraveling. He needed a scapegoat. Someone powerful enough to distract, innocent enough to be plausible. Someone Caden would trust, then doubt. Elara. Her rapid ascent, her sudden proximity to Caden—it made her perfect. The new, brilliant, slightly mysterious woman. A plan solidified, desperate and cruel. He watched Elara through the glass wall of her office, her brow furrowed in concentration. She was buried in data, oblivious to the shadow hovering just beyond her door. Vance waited for the moment she stepped away, even for a coffee break. Finally, she rose, stretching her arms above her head before heading towards the breakroom. His chance. Moving swiftly, Vance slipped into her office. His eyes scanned her desk. A small, elegant leather briefcase lay slightly ajar near her chair. Perfect. He reached inside, his fingers brushing against a few documents before finding what he sought: a slim, unmarked USB drive. He had prepared it days ago, a contingency. Carefully, he slid the USB into a small, interior pocket within the briefcase lining. It was tucked deep, almost hidden, but discoverable with a thorough search. The drive contained fabricated financial ledgers, encrypted emails to a rival firm's dummy corporation, and a detailed plan for Thorne Industries' proprietary tech transfer. All dated to appear as if Elara had been orchestrating the leak for months. His heart hammered against his ribs. He smoothed the lining, ensuring no trace remained. Then, he was out, closing the door softly behind him, just as Elara’s footsteps approached. He offered her a strained smile. She nodded, preoccupied, and returned to her desk. Hours later, the war room was a mess of crumpled coffee cups and whiteboards covered in diagrams. Caden ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. "We're missing something fundamental," he muttered, pacing before the large screen displaying a complex network map. Elara, slumped in her chair, rubbed her temples. "It's like looking for a ghost in a hurricane." Her voice was hoarse from hours of talking. Caden paused beside her desk, noticing her briefcase still open from earlier. "You should head home, Elara. Get some rest. We'll hit this fresh in the morning." He gestured towards her bag. "I'll walk you out." Wearily, she began to gather her things. Caden, ever the gentleman, reached down to help her close the briefcase. His fingers brushed against the leather, then snagged on something unusual. A tiny bulge in the lining. His brow furrowed. Curiosity pricked him. He pressed on the spot, feeling the hard, rectangular shape beneath the fabric. Strange. Elara didn't seem to notice his pause, still collecting stray papers. Caden's thumb found the seam. With a gentle pull, a small, hidden pocket opened. He extracted the USB drive. It was plain, unassuming, yet its presence in such a concealed spot screamed alarm. His eyes narrowed, flicking from the drive to Elara's face. "What's this?" he asked, his voice low, devoid of its usual warmth. Elara looked up, startled by his tone. Her gaze followed his to the small silver stick in his hand. She frowned, confused. "I… I don't know. I've never seen that before." Caden's jaw tightened. He plunged the USB into his laptop's port. The screen flickered. A folder popped open: 'Thorne Industries Espionage'. His breath hitched. He clicked. Financial ledgers. Communication logs. Detailed plans for data transfer. All meticulously forged, all pointing to Elara. His stomach dropped. The cold, hard data stared back at him, damning. He pulled the drive out with a sharp tug. His gaze, once filled with trust and weary admiration, turned to glacial ice as it fixed on Elara. Every muscle in his body stiffened.
