Chapter 48: Sacrifice of Steel

A guttural roar tore from Alaric's throat. The explosion on sub-level three vibrated through the very bones of Thorne Tower, a sickening tremor that threatened to bring the entire structure down. His comm crackled, filled with static, then a panicked shout from a floor supervisor about a catastrophic structural breach. Sera. His mind screamed her name.
He had been monitoring the network, tracking her unauthorized access. He knew she was down there, trying to fix the mess Lucius had created. His heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He didn't hesitate.
Darting from his secure command center on the fifty-fifth floor, Alaric sprinted towards the nearest emergency stairwell. Dust rained from the ceiling, gritty against his suit. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and burning metal.
Stairs groaned under his weight. He took them three at a time, his polished shoes skidding on debris. Emergency lights flickered, casting long, dancing shadows that made the descent feel like a nightmare. Every cell in his body urged him faster.
Remembering the schematics, the hidden maintenance shafts Sera had once described, he veered off the main stairwell on sub-level one. He knew the quickest, albeit most dangerous, route to her location.
Pulling open a heavy fire door, he found himself in a narrow, unlit service corridor. Steam hissed from ruptured pipes overhead. Sparks showered from exposed wires, illuminating fresh cracks spiderwebbing across the concrete walls.
He pushed forward, adrenaline a searing current through his veins. The building was dying around him. Each shudder, each groaning metallic shriek, was a testament to Lucius's destructive genius. Alaric knew the full extent of the sabotage; he’d seen the schematics, knew the vulnerabilities.
Then he heard it. A faint cry, muffled by the continuous rumble of collapsing concrete. "Sera!" he bellowed, his voice raw. He ran towards the sound, his movements precise despite the chaos.
Turning a corner, he saw her. Trapped. A massive concrete slab, once part of the ceiling, lay sprawled across the corridor, effectively sealing her off. Her face was smudged with dust, a streak of blood near her temple. But her eyes, those defiant, intelligent eyes, were fixed on a small, flickering console panel.
"Alaric!" she gasped, her voice hoarse. "The override… it’s unstable. The core servers… they’re failing!"
He shoved against the fallen slab, muscles straining, but it wouldn't budge. Too heavy. Too securely wedged. A cloud of fine dust billowed around him. He scanned the crumbling surroundings, his mind racing for an alternative.
"Can you stabilize it from there?" he yelled over the escalating roar of the building. His gaze swept over the damage, assessing the immediate structural integrity.
"I think so," she shouted back, her fingers flying across the damaged keyboard. "But the main conduits on this level are compromised. It’s creating a feedback loop to the central power. If I can reroute…"
A deafening crack echoed from directly above them. Alaric's head snapped up. A section of the ceiling, weakened by the previous explosion, began to buckle. A heavy, rusted steel beam, thick as a tree trunk, groaned ominously, tearing free from its moorings.
"Get back!" Alaric roared, launching himself forward, not towards safety, but towards the narrow gap beside the fallen slab where Sera worked. He knew the beam's trajectory. It would crush her. It would destroy the console she was fighting to save.
He threw himself across the opening, his body a shield. His arm shot out, grabbing her by the shoulder, yanking her clear of the direct impact zone. He spun, pushing her hard against the relative safety of the intact wall. His own body became a barrier, not just for her, but for the flickering screen.
The beam descended with terrifying speed. It was an unstoppable force. He braced himself, a primal instinct to protect overwhelming all else. The system, the company, Sera. It all converged into one single, desperate act.
Impact. A sound like the world tearing itself apart. The force was immense, crushing. A searing pain exploded through his left side, a white-hot agony that stole his breath. He felt the cold, unyielding steel bite into his flesh, pinning him to the ground.
His vision swam, dust and pain clouding his sight. He gasped, a ragged, wheezing sound. Through the haze, he saw Sera, her eyes wide with horror, already scrambling back towards him, her hands reaching out.
He couldn't move. He couldn't feel his legs. Blood welled in his mouth, a metallic tang. His breath hitched, each inhale a fire in his chest. His gaze locked onto hers, a desperate plea in his eyes.
"No!" Sera screamed, her voice breaking. She tried to pull at the beam, futilely. Tears streamed down her face, mixing with the dust.
He forced a weak smile, fighting the encroaching darkness. "Go!" he choked out, his voice barely a whisper. His hand, shaking violently, pointed beyond her, towards the deeper levels. "The core servers! Save it all!"
