Gasping, Amelia stared at the holographic display. Numbers flashed, an ominous red warning. Two occupants. Only two.
Elias's hand gripped hers tighter. His jaw clenched, a muscle twitching. He saw it too.
Leo, still clutched to Elias's side, whimpered softly. The tremors intensified, dust raining from the ceiling of the bunker entrance.
"No," Amelia whispered, her voice cracking. Her eyes darted between the screen and Elias's grim face. "That can't be right."
Instantly, Elias shook his head. "It is. Emergency protocol. Built for two, maximum efficiency, minimum footprint for a solo or paired threat."
He pushed Leo gently towards her, his gaze locked on the flickering interface. His fingers danced over the keypad, a blur of motion.
"What are you doing?" Amelia demanded, a chill seeping into her bones. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage.
Elias didn't answer directly. He typed rapidly, his brow furrowed in intense concentration. Codes scrolled, a green override sequence flashing briefly.
"Elias!" she pleaded, her voice rising above the groaning structure. A massive chunk of concrete peeled from the ceiling further down the corridor, crashing with a deafening roar.
He ignored her, his eyes fixed on the screen. A new prompt appeared. *Override initiated. Warning: Critical system integrity risk. Proceed?*
Sweat beaded on his forehead. He slammed his palm against the 'Yes' button. A low hum vibrated through the floor as the bunker door began to cycle, a heavy groan of metal.
"Elias, stop!" Amelia cried, understanding dawning with horrifying clarity. Her grip on Leo tightened, instinctively shielding him.
He spun, facing her fully. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were now filled with a desperate, raw emotion. "Amelia, listen to me."
His voice was strained, urgent. "This is the only way."
Reaching out, he gripped her shoulders. His fingers dug in, anchoring her to the present moment, to his terrifying decision.
"I'm not leaving you!" she protested, tears blurring her vision. She struggled against his hold, her mind screaming in denial.
Leo, sensing the shift, started to cry louder, burying his face into Amelia's chest.
"You have to," Elias insisted, his voice a low growl. "You and Leo. You're my world."
He glanced at the crumbling corridor, then back at her. "There's no time."
Amelia shook her head violently. "No! We find another way. We can all fit. We have to!"
His gaze pierced hers, unwavering. "There isn't another way. This bunker is programmed for specific biosignatures, a limited capacity. My presence would overload it."
He was lying. She knew it. But the conviction in his eyes, the sheer, unyielding force of his will, stole her breath.
Suddenly, the entire building shuddered violently. A deafening crack echoed from deep within Thorne Estate. They were running out of seconds.
Elias’s hands moved, pushing her firmly towards the now-opening bunker door. Its steel maw revealed a dark, sterile interior.
"Elias, please!" She resisted, digging her heels in. Her legs felt like lead, heavy with the weight of this impossible choice.
His face was etched with pain, but his resolve was unbreakable. "You promise me. You live. You protect him."
He gave her another forceful shove. Amelia stumbled forward, her momentum carrying her and Leo over the threshold. The air inside felt cold, clinical, a stark contrast to the burning world outside.
"No, Elias!" She reached back, her fingers clawing at the closing door frame, desperate to pull him in.
He shook his head, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. It was a smile of pure agony, pure love.
His hand pushed against her chest, a final, definitive barrier. His eyes, dark and pleading, bore into hers.
"Go. Live. For us."
With a powerful surge, he shoved her fully inside. The massive steel door groaned, then slammed shut with a final, echoing thud, severing them. The light from his eyes, from his presence, vanished, plunging Amelia and Leo into the bunker's sterile darkness.
