Chapter 4 of 10

A Necessary Cruelty

753 words

The faint, ancient sigil pulsed along the damp stone, glowing faint amber beneath layers of lime. His Glimmering Insight flared with sharp lines of gold, tracing the symbol's geometric lattice. It was a warding rune, archaic and powerful, its central anchor fractured. “What are you staring at, Cartographer?” Sisko's voice scraped through the humid air. He had moved closer, his gaze sharp, following Ilari’s focus to the faint glyph. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. And you recognize that, don’t you? That’s not common Archive script.” Ilari turned, his face a carefully constructed mask of disinterest, though the thrum of the sigil vibrated beneath his skin. “It is an archaic anchoring sequence. Cut before the systematization of the Archive's survey manuals.” He kept his tone neutral as amber data streams cascaded across his peripheral vision. [Veil-Labyrinth Instability: Class-5. Probability of total collapse: 67%.] [Sigil Re-contextualization: Pre-Maelstrom’s Maw era. Archive Keeper Valerik’s personal script?] [Fate-thread alteration: Sisko – elevated tension. Eino – developing despair.] Sisko closed the distance, his gauntlet striking the stone inches from the rune. “Before? You mean, *your* era? Before you became a guide for hire, scrubbing up after our messes.” Sisko's brow furrowed. “Don’t try to tell me you don’t know more. You got that look, the one you had when you predicted the collapse back in the guild hall. The look of a man holding aces he won’t show.” “My former rank is irrelevant. The script indicates a failing boundary, not a secret.” Ilari measured his breath, calculating the presence of this specific mark in an outer breach so far from the First Veil-Maelstrom. If the Archive Keeper had placed it himself... Before Sisko could retort, a low, resonant hum vibrated through the very bedrock. The cavern walls shuddered, and a curtain of caustic drainage parted to reveal a descending archway. Out of the swirling mist and acidic vapor strode an automaton, towering and silent. Its chassis was forged from polished, obsidian-dark alloys, etched with the unmistakable sigils of the Esoteric Archive. Two luminous, emerald eyes glowed from its blank, helmeted face. This was no ordinary bronze automaton; it was an Archive Sentinel, a heavy iron unit assigned solely to deep quarantine zones. The air cooled rapidly, reeking of ozone and scorched copper. The machine halted before them, its multi-jointed brass limbs clicking softly. A low, synthesized voice, devoid of inflection, boomed through the chamber, echoing off the slick, living walls. “Designation: Crimson Vanguard. Authorization Code: None. Presence within Breach Sector 47-Beta is in violation of Archive Decree 7-Theta.” Sisko gripped his pommel. “Violation? We hold an active salvage writ. What in the blazes is this?” “Cease all activity,” the construct rasped. “By order of the Esoteric Archive. Breach Sector 47-Beta is classified an irrecoverable containment failure. Purge mandate initiated. All internal entities subject to termination.” The machine's exhaust vented with a dull hiss into the quiet. Eino's ruddy cheeks went ash-pale. “Purge mandate? What does that even mean?” The construct's optical lenses flickered, casting a beam of blue light into the mist above its cowl. The beam shaped a familiar, severe face—the Archive Keeper. The phantom visage stared straight toward Ilari. “It means, Eino,” the Keeper's voice resonated from the emitter, “that this entire pocket of reality will be unraveled. Decimated. Cleared. In precisely twelve bell tolls.” The illusion shifted slightly toward the guide. “Ilari. I trust your Glimmering Insight has mapped this sector's terminal state. It widens. Its caustic rot threatens the settlements of Varak. This quarantine must prioritize the whole continent over its parts.” The transmission wavered with static. “You failed to bind the First Breach, Ilari. I will not permit another unchecked fault.” Sisko lunged forward. “Quarantine? You’re sealing us in! We have scouts two chambers down!” Sisko swung his plated arm directly through the beam, scattering the blue light into wisps of ion dust. The construct stood motionless. “Twelve bell tolls. Mandate irreversible.” It pivoted on mechanical heels and marched into the opening, allowing the slime to congeal behind it like hardening resin. Eino sank against the cavern wall, staring at his boots. “The Heartseed...” he whispered. “It’s past the second tier. We won't reach it before the collapse.” His granddaughter’s cure, suddenly, impossibly, snatched away. Sisko spun around, boot splashing in a pool of run-off. He seized Ilari by the collar of his linen vest. “You knew this was coming,” Sisko snarled, knuckles digging into Ilari's chest. “You read that rune. What else did that tyrant leave out for you to find?”
