Chapter 2 of 10
Whispers of the Weeping Labyrinth
965 words
The air in the drowned maze tasted of salt and ancient rust. Gravity here was a fickle thing, tugging at the Crimson Vanguard’s boots one moment, then easing its grip, making the next step feel like a leap onto a cloud. The walls were calcified marrow that pulsed faintly, secreting a viscous emerald discharge that sizzled against stone, leaving trails of acrid smoke.
Ilari moved with a deliberate, almost unnervingly smooth gait, his eyes scanning the impossible geometry of the passage. His field of vision resolved into hard data: the `[STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: 17%]` of a sagging archway, the `[CORROSION RATE: 4.2 units/second]` of a fallen pillar, and the `[GRAVITY FLUX: 0.8g to 1.3g]` of the corridor. Sisko stalked ahead, his boots sloshing through the discharge, heedless of the caustic acid eating into his leather.
“Mind the puddles, Sisko,” Ilari stated, his voice flat, devoid of admonishment. “The lower passages here are saturated. We should stick to the higher ledges for another hundred paces.”
Sisko merely grunted, not bothering to look back. “My boots have seen worse than a bit of slime, cartographer. Just point the way, don’t try to baby us.”
“He’s got a point, lad,” Eino murmured, catching up to Ilari. The graying scout shifted the heavy pack across his shoulders. “This isn’t one of your Archive’s pristine libraries. It’s a Breach. Ugly, dangerous, and always keen to remind you of it.” Eino’s gaze softened as he met Ilari’s. “But… you’re seeing something, aren’t you? More than just the obvious.”
Ilari merely tilted his head, a silent acknowledgment. The passive overlay cataloged Eino's cadence. `[EINO: Current Disposition: Concern (Sisko's recklessness), Hope (Ilari's competence), Urgency (Granddaughter's health)]`.
“Sisko charges headlong into everything,” Eino muttered as the rest of the company pushed ahead. “That’s what makes him a damn good leader in a charge. But these Breaches… they don’t care for blunt force. They’re too clever for it.” He hesitated, glancing around as if the weeping walls themselves might be listening. “My kin back in the low valley... she’s fading. The Archive healers claim it’s the slow touch of the Unraveling. But travelers speak of a core relic hidden deep within a living Breach, rumored to mend an unraveling soul. That’s why I took Sisko’s coin, why I push him so hard.”
Ilari’s sight sparked, revealing the lines connecting Eino to an unraveling filament labeled `[KIN: Health - Critical, Declining]` and a looped projection marked `[QUEST: Core Relic of the Breach]`. That objective remained knotted to Sisko’s crimson fate-cord. If Sisko died, Eino’s goal collapsed with him.
“That relic is a myth,” Ilari said. “No Archive expedition ever verified it. The core is simply an unpredictable nexus of warped reality.”
“Maybe for them,” Eino said, a flicker of defiance in his eyes. “But we have you now, don’t we? Someone who can read the very seams of this place.”
A guttural shriek echoed from the passage ahead, followed by the clatter of steel against something unseen. “Ambush!” Sisko’s roar ripped through the air. “They’re phasing!”
Ilari sprinted forward, his mind already processing the unfolding chaos. The company veterans slashed wildly at empty air. Aberrations, their forms like shifting shadows woven from caustic sludge, flickered across space, raking with corrosive claws before vanishing. These were `[GHAST-WEAVERS: Dimensional Aberration, Phase-Shift Capability, Physical Vulnerability: Temporal Anchors]`.
Sisko, his massive greatsword a blur, roared in frustration. “Hold your ground! Don’t let them get close!” But brute force was useless against foes that simply didn’t exist for a moment. One Ghast-Weaver solidified behind an unshielded recruit, talons arcing toward bare neck. Sisko tried to intercept, but his blade passed through its spectral form.
“No, you fool!” Ilari snapped, a rare tremor of urgency in his tone. Data-points flared across Ilari's field of view, highlighting pulsing nodes along the monsters' spines. `[WEAKNESS IDENTIFIED: TEMPORAL ANCHOR - FRACTAL NODE]`.
“Strike the nodal points!” Ilari commanded. “The glowing filaments anchor their mass! Sever them!” He gestured toward the beast behind the recruit, directing Sisko’s strike. “There! Just above the left shoulder, where the sludge coalesces!”
Sisko, driven by instinct and desperation, didn’t question. He swung. His greatsword, instead of passing harmlessly through, met solid resistance. A sickening thud echoed, and the Ghast-Weaver shrieked, its spectral form solidifying with a wet pop before crumpling into a puddle of foul-smelling goo.
“By the Void!” Eino breathed, disbelief etched on his face. “It worked!”
“Focus on the nodes!” Ilari called out, directing the fighters with flat precision. “Vanya, the third segment of its tail! Garret, aim for the spine just below the head! Sisko, the one at your flank, its right elbow!”
The squad adjusted their tactics. Blades, axes, and bolts, once useless, now found purchase. The Ghast-Weavers, caught off guard by the sudden shift in strategy, solidified, shrieked, and fell, one after another, until only their dissolving puddles remained.
Silence settled over the chamber, punctuated by ragged breathing and the slow drip of acid. Sisko stood with lowered steel, staring down at the residue. He looked at Ilari, then back at the dissolving ooze, then at Ilari again.
“How in the Blight…?” Sisko began, his voice rough. “How did you know that?”
Ilari ignored the question, his attention already drawn to something else. As the threat cleared, his vision caught a geometric pattern etched into the damp stone. Not a natural formation, but an intricate, arcane sigil, barely visible beneath layers of slime. It pulsed with a residual, forgotten energy. `[OBSCURED SIGIL: Chrono-Stabilization Matrix (Partial)]`. He recognized it. A symbol from the forbidden, archived texts he’d meticulously studied in the Esoteric Archive, texts detailing the earliest, failed attempts to contain the Breaches. It was a sigil for temporal anchoring, far more complex than any known to modern mages, and its presence here meant something deeply unsettling.
