Chapter 50 of 50

Bleeding Canvas, Broken Heart

418 words

Shards of glass rained down. The alarm shrieked, a piercing cry that ripped through the suddenly fractured silence of the penthouse. Thorne’s eyes, wide with a feral desperation, locked onto Aurora. His arm coiled, a hidden blade flashing in his grip, aimed directly at her chest. He moved with the speed of a cornered predator. A guttural cry tore from Julian’s throat. He launched himself forward, a blur of protective instinct. His body slammed into Aurora, shoving her violently out of the way. She stumbled, a gasp catching in her throat, her hands flying out to brace herself against the wall. A sickening thud echoed through the room. The blade, meant for Aurora, plunged deep into Julian’s side. His body stiffened, a choked groan escaping his lips as the impact forced the air from his lungs. His eyes, wide with a pain that instantly eclipsed the anger, met Aurora's. He crumpled. Thorne, momentarily stunned by Julian’s sacrifice, hesitated. His gaze flickered from the bleeding man to the shattered window, then to the flashing lights beginning to converge below. Sirens, faint at first, grew rapidly louder, a desperate chorus ascending the building. He wasn’t done. With a snarl, Thorne ripped the blade from Julian’s flesh, a fresh spray of crimson painting the polished floor. He glared at Aurora, a promise of future retribution burning in his eyes, before twisting away. The rival’s form, a dark shadow, vanished through the gaping hole in the window, rappelling down a pre-prepared rope, a ghost disappearing into the chaos he’d wrought. Aurora didn't see him go. Her world had narrowed to Julian. His slumped form, the rapidly spreading stain on his pristine white shirt. The raw, guttural sound of his ragged breathing. His eyes, still open, stared up at her, clouded with agony. She dropped to her knees. “Julian!” Her voice was a ragged whisper, a foreign sound tearing from her throat. Her hands flew to his side, pressing against the wound, a futile attempt to stem the flow. Warm, sticky wetness instantly coated her fingers. So much blood. Too much. His head lolled to the side, resting against her arm. A faint tremor ran through his body. His lips parted, but no words came, only a choked gurgle. His gaze, once so sharp and commanding, now seemed distant, unfocused. “Stay with me,” she pleaded, her voice cracking. Tears, hot and stinging, blurred her vision. She pressed harder, ignoring the sickening warmth soaking through her clothes, ignoring the metallic tang in the air.
