Chapter 7 of 10

Iron Bones, Jade Skin

The shimmering gas thickened, pressing down like an invisible anvil. Sutara’s breath caught, his chest constricting with agonizing slowness. Every inhalation felt like drawing air through a straw while submerged in molasses. His vision swam, pinpricks of light dancing at the edges of his sight. Beside him, Darma coughed, a ragged, wet sound, his hand flying to his throat. His perfectly cultivated physique, designed for zero-gravity mecha piloting, offered no defense against this brute-force atmospheric weapon. “Sutara…” Darma rasped, his eyes wide with alarm, then narrowing in focus. “Your… aura. It’s changing.” Sutara ignored him, every ounce of his remaining focus dedicated to fighting the crushing pressure. This was no mere inconvenience for the unmodified; it was a slow, agonizing death. The assassin-droid, a sleek predator of segmented obsidian, advanced, its red optical sensors fixing on them. One articulated arm snapped forward, a series of rapid *thwips* announcing the launch of compact stun-darts. He had no choice. The façade of the helpless, frail elite decoy had to shatter. He bit down on a groan, the metallic tang of blood filling his mouth. Drawing upon the ancient wisdom of the Beggar Sect, he twisted his stance, a subtle, almost imperceptible shift in his center of gravity. His awareness sharpened, reaching deep within the core of his being, a place he hadn’t fully accessed since his transmigration. The pressure of the gas was immense, a direct assault on his physical frame, but it was also a stimulant, a challenge to his very essence. He pushed. Not outward, but inward. Intense heat surged from his solar plexus, radiating through his limbs. His bones, accustomed to the frail structure of his new body, resonated with a faint, deep thrum. His skin tightened, not stiffening, but gaining an uncanny resilience, like polished river stone. This was the ‘Iron Bones, Jade Skin’ technique, a hidden method for enduring impossible pressures, for transforming the body into an unyielding vessel. He felt the internal resistance to the gas increase, allowing him a shallow, painful gasp of air. The stun-darts whizzed past, missing by centimeters. He moved, not with the frantic desperation of a cornered animal, but with the quiet, focused grace of a master. Darma watched, eyes fixed on Sutara, a silent, reverent awe blooming on his face as the gas, which still clawed at his own lungs, seemed to *recoil* from Sutara’s transformed presence. The droid fired again, this time with laser precision. Sutara ducked under a crimson beam, the air sizzling above him. He closed the distance in three impossibly swift strides, his footwork a blur. The droid swung a reinforced titanium arm, aiming to pulverize him. Sutara didn't dodge. Instead, he met the strike. His open palm, now seemingly harder than stone, connected with the droid's elbow joint. There was no theatrical impact, no explosion of sparks. Only a sharp, sickening *crack*. The droid’s limb crumpled inward, gears grinding, its motion sensor pulsing erratically. Darma gasped, a sound choked by the gas, but laced with pure astonishment. Sutara spun, using the droid's own momentum, and delivered a precise, focused qi strike to the junction of its torso and neck. The obsidian carapace, designed to withstand mecha-grade weapons, groaned under the silent impact. Another *crack*, louder this time, reverberated through the archive. The droid’s head lolled, its crimson optics going dark, its advanced frame utterly disabled. It collapsed to the floor in a heap of inert, shattered components. Sutara stood over it, chest heaving, the faint hum of his qi receding. The 'Iron Bones, Jade Skin' technique had protected him, but the strain was immense. His muscles trembled, and the metallic taste in his mouth intensified. The gas, still thick and oppressive, continued its relentless work. “Sutara…” Darma whispered, pushing himself upright against a data-stack. His eyes, usually cool and composed, were wide and bright, reflecting the dim emergency lights of the archives. “What… what was that?” “A trick,” Sutara managed, his voice hoarse, dismissive as always, though an unfamiliar warmth sparked in his chest at Darma's unmasked wonder. He quickly scanned the sealed room. The heavy blast door was impassable, designed to withstand a siege. His gaze landed on a narrow ventilation shaft high on the wall, barely large enough for a person. “We need to go. Now.” Darma, despite his own weakened state, nodded immediately, moving without question. Sutara leaped, his hand finding purchase on a protruding data conduit, and pulled himself up. He delivered a series of rapid, precise kicks to the ventilation grate. The metal groaned, then tore away, exposing a dark, dusty tunnel. He motioned for Darma, who, with a grunt, hoisted himself up. Sutara went first, wriggling through the tight space, the air marginally thinner in the shaft. Darma followed, his broader shoulders scraping against the metal. They emerged into a service conduit, a labyrinth of pipes and wires beneath the main academy floors. The gas was less potent here, but still present, a constant, low-level threat. As they navigated the grimy passages, a chime echoed from Darma’s wrist-comm. Darma glanced at it, apprehension hardening his features. “A galaxy-wide broadcast… from the Grand Proctor’s office.” He tapped the comm, and a projection shimmered to life: Councilor Raxus’s sneering face, superimposed over a holographic image of Sutara, frozen mid-dodge from the funeral footage. Raxus's voice, amplified and chillingly calm, filled the narrow conduit. “Citizens of the Pusantara Star-Network, your Grand Proctor addresses you with grave news,” Raxus began, his eyes glinting with malicious triumph. “The recently identified heir, Sutara Vashanti, has been revealed as an imposter. We have uncovered incontrovertible evidence that he is an unmodified dreg, who murdered the true heir, Prince Aerion, and usurped his identity.” A ripple of shock spread across Darma’s face. Sutara felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. The second jolt. Raxus continued, his voice dripping with false sorrow. “This imposter, Sutara, is now a wanted criminal. He is to be apprehended, dead or alive. Any who aid him will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of Star-Network law. This is not merely a matter of security; it is a matter of preserving the purity of our perfected bloodlines.” The projection flickered, then vanished. Darma stared at his comm, then at Sutara, his face a complex mask of disbelief, anger, and fierce protectiveness. The implications were staggering. They were hunted, not just by Raxus, but by the entire galaxy. Suddenly, the comm crackled again, a private, encrypted channel. Darma’s brow furrowed. He tapped it. Raxus’s voice, now closer, sharper, filled the space between them. “Darma Vala. I know you are listening. I know you are with him. You have one chance to redeem your family’s disgraced name. Execute the imposter now, and your status will be restored. Refuse, and face summary execution for treason alongside him.”
