Chapter 2 of 10
Points on the Meridian

The plasma-blade hummed, charging, its heat searing the air before Sutara’s throat. Cipi, a six-legged blur of emerald light, launched itself from Sutara’s shoulder, a high-pitched snarl tearing from its tiny maw. It arced towards Darma’s face, only to be stopped mid-air by an invisible force, pinning it against the mausoleum wall, chittering in impotent fury. Sutara calculated the angles: direct engagement against Darma Vala was suicide. His current shell, a vessel of genetic mediocrity, would shatter like brittle bone. He needed a distraction, an opening.
“A void, you say?” Sutara’s voice remained calm, a calculated gamble against Darma’s escalating rage. “Perhaps a void is merely a space waiting to be filled. Or, perhaps, a chasm that swallows all your vaunted genetic gifts.” He met Darma’s gaze, not with defiance, but with an unnerving, tranquil observation. The move was designed to provoke thought, to slightly delay the inevitable strike.
Darma’s obsidian eyes twitched with a momentary hesitation. “Bluster. I’ll peel back your skin and find the truth beneath.” The plasma-blade pulsed, its heat intensifying, singeing the fine hairs on Sutara’s neck. A low growl rumbled in Darma’s chest, a sound of primal irritation.
Suddenly, the tomb's ancient grav-lights strobed violently in crimson. A piercing, multi-tonal klaxon blared through the hallowed halls, echoing off the sarcophagi. “Mandala Citadel Emergency Protocol Alpha-Seven activated! All registered students, immediate VR arena deployment! Repeat, immediate VR arena deployment!” The automated voice boomed, sharp and insistent.
Before Darma could react, a shimmering sapphire light enveloped both figures, crackling with raw energy. The stone crypt, the pulsing glow, the hum of the blade – all dissolved into a blinding rush of data. Sutara felt a familiar wrenching sensation, a spatial disorientation that spoke of rapid quantum translation. His consciousness spiraled, then snapped back into sharp focus.
He stood, not in the humid darkness of the mausoleum, but on a vast, featureless grey platform. Above, a stylized canopy of artificial stars glittered. Around him, towering crystalline structures rose, forming a colossal arena. This was the Aegis Nexus, the Mandala Citadel’s primary VR proving ground. Mocking jeers echoed from transparent observation pods suspended high above. Sutara looked down. His funeral robes, tattered and dust-laden, still clung to his form. No mecha. Not even a combat harness. He was unarmed, unarmored, and utterly exposed.
Before him, easily fifty meters high, materialized a monstrous form. The Kala-Beast. Its synthetic hide rippled with projected muscle, a grotesque parody of ancient Terran predators, its six clawed limbs scraping against the virtual ground. Its head, a jumble of jagged teeth and glowing optic sensors, swiveled towards Sutara, emitting a guttural snarl that vibrated through the platform. The beast’s energy core, a visible pulsating ruby sphere embedded in its chest, flared with malevolent intent.
“Look at that dreg!” a voice sneered from an observation box, amplified for the entire arena. “They even left him in the funeral rags! Did someone forget to provision Lyxos’s decoy a training mech?” Snickers rippled across the galleries, a chorus of derision. Sutara’s mind, however, was already performing lightning calculations. An energy core, visible. A lumbering gait despite its size. Digital construct. The ridicule cost nothing; survival cost everything.
He took a deep, centering breath, channeling the faint warmth of his internal qi, a familiar river flowing through ancient meridians. Physical martial arts, dismissed as a primitive relic by these genetically enhanced elites, were his only weapon. The Kala-Beast charged, its towering bulk shaking the virtual ground, optical sensors locking onto Sutara. It brought down a heavy, clawed forelimb, aiming to crush him into the platform.
Sutara moved. Not with frantic panic, but with the calculated balance of a rooftop prowler. He didn’t dodge away; he flowed *into* the beast’s attack, a near-invisible blur. The colossal claw whistled past, missing him by a hair’s breadth. In a single, explosive leap, Sutara propelled himself upward, his worn boots finding purchase on the beast’s scaly hide. He scaled its leg like a spider, fueled by concentrated qi, moving with impossible speed for an unmodified human.
The beast roared, swiping blindly, but Sutara was already a blur on its flank, his hands moving. He struck. Not with brute force, but with precision, targeting the beast’s digital nerve clusters – pressure points he instinctively knew, even in a simulated construct, were vital. A precise jab to the junction of its second and third ribs. A driving palm strike to the base of its neck. Another, a rapid series of finger jabs to the exposed optical array near its jawline.
Each strike, infused with internal qi, sent ripples through the Kala-Beast’s hulking frame. Its roars turned into garbled, glitching static. Its limbs locked, then spasmed erratically. The pulsating ruby core in its chest dimmed to a faint sputter. The beast froze into an inert monument of synthetic horror, edges jittering as if struggling against dissolution.
“What in the…?” a voice gasped from the spectator pods. The jeers died into stunned silence. The trial matrix, built to withstand complex neural assault and mechanized weaponry, buckled under the illogical data of a physically paralyzed target. The air crackled. The dome of artificial stars fractured into a kaleidoscope of error messages. With a violent, electronic shriek, the entire Aegis Nexus VR system crashed.
Sutara felt the familiar wrench of teleportation again, a dizzying disorientation. He materialized back in the Mandala Citadel’s main training lobby, the smell of sterile synth-steel replacing the mausoleum’s damp earth. Before he could fully orient himself, strong fingers, cold as ice, gripped his arm. Darma Vala, his face pale, staring with an unreadable intensity, hauled him from the sensory cradle. Darma’s mecha uniform, usually pristine, was rumpled, as if he’d been violently jolted.
“What was that, dreg? What did you just *do*?” Darma’s voice was low, laced with something that sounded like shock, even fear. He didn’t release Sutara, instead pulling him close, almost shielding him from the sudden hush that had fallen over the bustling lobby. Hundreds of elite students, emerging from their own VR pods, stared. Their faces, usually filled with disdain, were now a mixture of stunned silence and dawning comprehension.
The towering holographic display above the lobby, usually broadcasting pilot rankings, shuttered erratically. Then, with a stark finality, it stabilized, displaying a single line of data, amplified for the entire academy to see:
