Chapter 9 of 10
The Final Course
877 words
“The [Axiom of Rust] is an offering, Bence,” Ferenc rasped, a low hum vibrating in his throat. “It’s *my* offering. You can’t purify it. You can only destroy its essence, and then what? What will I give them?”
Bence ignored him, his focus absolute. Zita leaned against a cracked pillar, knuckles white against the granite as she fought off the backlash of the 'Edict of the First Citadel.' The spectral blue lines of the ancient law held the Axiom of Rust in a shimmering, agonizing stillness. Its jagged, metal-fanged maw was frozen open, its decay-laced tendrils suspended mid-air. The interlocking patterns drifted clear under his gaze: ribbons of 'Wearing' and 'Mending,' 'Corrosion' and 'Refinement.'
[Grand Culinarian] operated on balance rather than ruin. He extended his hands, palms open, feeling the subtle currents of conceptual force radiating from the inert Axiom. The foreign hunger injected by the steel edge required immediate paring before the dish spoiled entirely.
“It’s not ruination, Ferenc,” Bence said, keeping his breathing level. “It’s refining the stock.”
Ferenc snarled, a sound more animal than human. “Evolution for *what*? For you to play hero? You’ll ruin everything!” He lunged, his steel forearm cutting an arc of scarlet light. The stone floor cracked under the force of his launch.
“Bence, look out!” Zita cried, pushing herself to her feet, but her vision was still swimming.
Before Bence could react, a blur of olive-green and dark metal slammed into Ferenc. Commander Jolan, her armor dented and scarred from the earlier fight, had moved with startling speed. She didn't parry or dodge; she simply *took* the blow.
Ferenc's scythe-arm smashed against Jolan's shoulder. The impact carried no ringing chime, only a dull shredding sound as the plate tore open along its molecular grain. Jolan grunted, a line of blood appearing at the corner of her mouth, but she held fast, her body rigid.
[Skill Activated: Bastion’s Aegis]
Blue text flashed, then solidified into an almost physical barrier around Jolan. The barrier swallowed the kinetic shock, siphoning the hostile pressure straight into her frame. Grey stone striations crept up her neck, mirroring the fossilized titan anchored beneath the city. Her eyes, usually so sharp, now glowed with a dull, resolute amber light.
“Stand down, Nagy,” Jolan commanded, her boots locking into the masonry as dust rattled loose from the floorplates.
Ferenc recoiled, not from pain, but from the sudden, inexplicable dulling of his strike. His scarlet aura guttered, the curved edge grinding uselessly against her calcified skin. “What is this? You’re turning yourself into a relic?”
“I am becoming what I swore to be,” Jolan said, taking another heavy slash without giving an inch. “A shield.”
Jolan had dismissed his class on day one. Now she traded her marrow to buy him three seconds.
He pushed the image of Jolan, the living, suffering shield, to the back of his mind. He focused on the Axiom. Purification demanded an emulsion. He aligned his mana to introduce 'Balance' and 'Renewal,' matching the technique to the volatile mass.
[Skill Activated: Refine Conceptual Ingredients]
His hands moved with an almost ethereal grace, tracing invisible lines in the air above the immobilized Axiom. He treated the open air like a heated copper pan, segregating each volatile element by density. He skimmed the black grease of 'Wanting' from the periphery, gathering the sludge into a tight, dormant sphere. He then began to infuse 'Mending' and 'Renewal,' drawing them from the very air, from the latent potential of the petrified Heart itself, weaving them into the Axiom’s core structure.
Ferenc roared, a sound of frustrated fury. He hammered the commander repeatedly, his arm hacking gouges into her calcified frame. Stone flakes scattered across the flags, yet her stance stayed planted.
“Bence… finish it,” Jolan rasped through bloodied teeth.
Bence locked out the panic in his throat and drove both hands forward into the shimmering matrix.
[Condition Met: Axiom of Rust – Purification Complete]
[Axiom of Rust has been reformed into: Principle of Change]
The spectral law holding the Axiom dissipated, and the creature shimmered. Its jagged form softened, its metal teeth receding into a smooth, shifting surface. The tendrils that had spread decay now pulsed with a gentle, emerald light, not devouring, but *reforming*. The gaping maw closed, reforming into a smooth, featureless surface that rippled like water.
The air cleared of sulfur. Along the shattered parapet, pulverized stone re-fused into seamless blocks, the decay inverting along its own fracture lines.
Ferenc took two stumbling steps back, staring at the mended masonry.
“No,” Ferenc whispered, his blade-arm collapsing back into meat and trembling bone. The red glow sputtered out, leaving him pale and bare-handed.
Jolan's calcified shell turned to chalk and fell away in dry sheets. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed limp across the flags.
Just as Bence moved to catch her, the very fabric of reality screamed. A jagged split ripped open the clouds above the outer walls. It was a wound in the firmament, impossibly vast and impossibly dark, revealing nothing but an infinite void. From that void, a voice boomed, echoing through the wounded world, a sound that shook the very ground beneath their feet, resonated in their bones, and vibrated with an ancient, terrifying fury.
“Tribute insufficient. The promise is broken.”
