Chapter 1 of 10
The Flavor of Fear
1.1k words
The air froze solid. Dust motes hung dead in mid-drift, defying gravity. Beside Bence Kelemen, Private Kerecsen, a burly [Stone Sentinel], brought his hammer down on the shimmering distortion, only for the clang of steel on whatever constituted the anomaly to simply… vanish. The hammer passed through a membrane of pure absence, and Kerecsen's jaw sagged as the recoil dislocated his shoulders. He couldn't even yell. Air died in his throat.
“Useless, get back!” Sergeant Pál barked, his voice thin and reedy in the dead air. Pál, a [Resonance Striker], hurled a crackling sphere of sonic energy, his signature strike. It flew straight into the wavering form—a translucent silhouette drinking every trace of noise. The sphere dissolved, not exploding, not reflecting, just fading away. The entity didn't even twitch.
[Axiom of Silence: Immunity to Sonic, Kinetic, and Aetheric damage confirmed.]
The blue text box appeared with chilling indifference, floating before Bence’s eyes. He stood petrified, his fingers shaking around the bone hilt of his chef’s knife. A kitchen blade. What good was steel against an abstract idea given form? His Class, [Grand Culinarian], felt like a sick jest. While the rest of Squad Alpha fought for survival, Bence had done nothing but watch. His skill, [Appraise Meat], felt particularly insulting now.
“Kelemen, don’t just stand there gawking!” Pál yelled, ducking a tendril of frozen shadow that lashed out, leaving dead immobility in its path. “You’re supposed to be a ‘master observer’! Tell us how to cook this thing!” The sarcasm cut deep.
Bence flinched. His face burned. He *wanted* to help, but every instinct, every bit of training, told him his skills were irrelevant. He was a line cook, not a warrior. He was supposed to be carving roasts, not fighting monsters that erased existence.
Another tendril whipped past, slicing through the air where the sentinel had stood. The man vanished. Not dead, not even disintegrated. Just erased. The space he occupied turned blank, as though wiped from memory. Pál choked on his breath.
Then, from the left flank, boots thundered. Commander Jolan’s elite Vanguard, Captain Fülöp at the fore, crashed into the clearing. Fülöp, a mountain of iron with an [Earthshaker] maul, slammed his weapon into the flagstones. A shockwave ripped through the dirt, a visible crest of force. It met the silhouette, rippled around its edges, and dispersed into nothingness. The monster remained untouched.
Jolan, grim-faced, her own [Anima Warden] shield shimmering with protective energy, raised her hand. “Hold! It’s immune to kinetic force!”
“Commander!” Fülöp bellowed, his voice straining. “My maul is doing nothing! It’s like hitting… a void!”
Squad Alpha was being systematically wiped out. Pál, now alone, let out a mute shriek as another tendril reached for him. Jolan’s Vanguard slammed into the same impossible wall. Commander Jolan herself, usually an unshakeable pillar, tightened her grip as her soldiers vanished. This was the end. The clearing was emptying.
Panic spiked in Bence's gut. Not for himself, but for the hollow horror in Pál’s face, for the resignation hardening Jolan’s brow. His comrades were about to be erased into oblivion. He couldn’t let that happen. Not like this. He couldn’t just cower.
His gaze darted to the translucent silhouette. His [Appraise Meat] skill triggered as a reflex, a frantic gamble. What did he have to lose? He focused, not on flesh, but on the intrinsic nature of the beast.
[Appraise Meat skill activated on target: Axiom of Silence.]
A new blue text box appeared, larger, more intricate than usual, and for the first time, not cryptic. It displayed a detailed nutritional breakdown, but instead of calories and protein, it listed:
[Conceptual Ingredients: Stillness (90%), Oblivion (10%)]
Stillness. Oblivion. The readout struck him like a butcher's mallet. The entity wasn’t immune to damage; it devoured mute impacts because non-motion was its core makeup! It swallowed strikes because sound was the direct opposite of its substance!
Understanding flared through his doubts. He knew what to do. His voice, usually hesitant, tore raw from his lungs.
“MAKE NOISE! EVERYONE! MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS YOU CAN!”
Jolan, dodging a silent lunge, stared at him, bewildered. “Kelemen, what are you talking about? We can’t even hit it!”
“It’s the quiet!” Bence shouted, his voice cracking. “Its ingredients! Stillness! Oblivion! If you make enough racket, you rupture its framework! Crack the freeze!”
He snatched a dropped iron pot lid from the dirt and bashed it against a slab of basalt. A jarring, metallic clang rang out through the muted clearing. It sounded ridiculous, but it produced raw noise.
Fülöp caught the manic certainty on Bence’s face and hesitated for only a heartbeat. With a battle roar, he swung his maul against the petrified beast's stone flank, not at the anomaly itself, but against bedrock. The blast of the blow, a thunderous boom, tore through the hush. It didn't vanish. It echoed.
And the horror flickered. Its translucent outline wavered, ripples running through the boundary. It gave off a high-pitched, thin whine, like grinding static.
“It’s working! Keep going!” Bence shrieked, banging his lid with renewed frenzy.
Jolan’s brows shot up as she understood. “EVERYONE! SHOUT! STRIKE! MAKE NOISE!” Her voice cut across the battlefield. Her Anima Warden shield flared, throwing off a screeching drone of energy. Her squad joined in, bellowing, battering weapons against flagstones, against tree trunks, against anything resonant. Captain Fülöp’s maul became a drum, each impact a thunderclap.
The cacophony mounted. With every boom, every war cry, every clang of steel on stone, the creature writhed. Its membrane turned cloudy and unstable, as if the quiet binding it were breaking apart under the pressure.
Spotting an opening, Fülöp brought his maul around, striking directly into the distorted torso. The blow connected with a concussive thud. A jagged rip tore through the air as a chunk of the creature fractured, dissolving into motes that blew away. The thing howled, a shrill bray of raw pain.
Commander Jolan stared at Bence, her expression a mix of awe and disbelief. The man she’d dismissed, the one with the ludicrous Class, had just shown them the way. He had seen the invisible truth.
[Condition Fulfilled: Core Concept of Axiom of Silence shattered.]
[New Skill Acquired: Deconstruct Axiom.]
The blue text box glowed, cold judgment etched in light. The entity, rapidly knitting the broken chunk back together, pivoted its swirling mass toward Bence. Its soundless snarl broadcast raw, murderous malice, locked directly onto his chest.
