Chapter 10 of 10

The Biomatch

1.1k words

Jezra’s gaze tore from the screen to Ozan’s face, etched in a pallor that spoke of finality. His breath rasped, shallow and stuttering. The digital mandate pulsed on the glass, an unblinking legal demand for total capitulation. She knelt beside the table, the ozone tang sharp in her nostrils. “Ozan,” she whispered, her voice dry. “Did you hear that? It wants the entire syndicate. Your holding. Your life.” His eyes, cloudy with the haze of cellular collapse, found hers. A weak tremor ran through his body. He couldn't speak, but his gaze held hers, lucid in its intensity. A single, almost imperceptible nod. No hesitation. No struggle. He was giving it all to her. “Confirm deed shift of Vex Munitions ownership and all life-rights to Jezra Yul,” she snapped at the console, her voice cracking. “Authorize. Now!” [AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED. PROCESSING DEED TRANSFER. BIOMETRIC SIGNATURES ALIGNED.] [TRANSFER COMPLETE. VEX MUNITIONS INC. AND ALL ASSOCIATED ASSETS, INCLUDING SUBJECT: OZAN VEX, NOW LEGALLY DEEDED TO JEZRA YUL. NEW CEO ACCESS GRANTED.] The red error vanished, replaced by a vibrant green. The surgical unit whirred, its robotic arms extending with newfound urgency. Gel-pads settled on Ozan’s chest, a needle-thin extractor poised over Jezra’s distended belly. There was no pain, only a cool pressure as the cord-blood sample was drawn, a whisper of life-saving cells siphoned away, then another set of pads applying a bio-seal. [STEM-CELL EXTRACTION: COMPLETE. INFUSION PROTOCOL: INITIATED.] The medical bay hummed, pneumatic valves hissing rhythmically. Ozan’s body spasmed once, then relaxed. His breathing deepened, the gray receded from his skin, replaced by a healthier, though still pale, tone. He remained unconscious, but the sinus rhythm held solid across the green readout. Jezra sagged against the console, her knees trembling beneath her swollen belly. The baby was safe, Ozan was stabilizing, and the empire's keys sat in her grip. A breathless snicker bubbled up, cut dead as the entrance doors hissed open with a sharp, pneumatic screech. Sabina Vex, a pristine figure in her tailored obsidian suit, strode in, her face a mask of triumphant malice. Two armored guards in company carbon-weave flanked her, electro-lances leveled. She didn't spare a glance for Jezra, her gaze fixed on the examination table where Ozan lay. A cruel smile stretched her lips. “Well, well. It seems my errant son finally met his match,” Sabina purred, her voice dripping with venom. “And you, street-rat, you really thought you could outsmart me? A low-born parasite trying to siphon the Vex legacy? Pathetic.” She gestured grandly at the inert Ozan. “Harvest the child. Leave the filth for the incinerator.” Her bodyguards stepped forward, lifting their barrels. Jezra stood, pushing off the console, a newfound steel in her spine. “Hold it,” she barked, squaring her shoulders. “Stop right there.” Sabina paused, one perfectly sculpted eyebrow arching. “You dare give orders in my private bay? You think because you—” [WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED COMMAND PROTOCOL DETECTED. SECURITY ALERT.] The console's speaker blared over Sabina’s voice. A steel servo arm whipped around, pointing a scalpel tip directly at the matriarch. Both guards froze, their visors flashing amber. Their helmets registered the alert, their internal systems processing. A moment of bewildered silence stretched, thick with impending consequence. “Jezra Yul,” the console chimed, “as the newly registered CEO and sole proprietor of Vex Munitions Incorporated, you hold root clearance. State your directive.” Sabina’s face contorted, her triumph curdling into a grotesque mask of disbelief. She glared from the surgical console to her men, then locked onto Jezra with sudden pallor. “What… what is this trickery?!” “Trickery?” Jezra crossed her arms, flashing teeth. “Just corporate protocol, Matriarch. Your son signed over the deeds. Every share. To me.” “Including your budget,” Jezra added, nodding toward the guards. “Arrest Sabina Vex. Charges: attempted murder, conspiracy, and criminal neglect. Lock her in the sublevel cells.” The squad, wired to the registry's root directive, pivoted without hesitation. Before Sabina could screech, gauntlets locked her wrists behind her back, her face twisting into a snarl as the escort hauled her into the corridor. The doors hissed shut, sealing away her impotent rage. Jezra released a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline receded, leaving her trembling. She sank into a nearby chair, rubbing her belly. The baby kicked, a soft, reassuring flutter. Then, a sharp, familiar ping cut through the quiet. Her wrist-comm vibrated. A message from Zekal. She tapped it open. [MESSAGE FROM: ZEKAL (THE SHADOW-RUNNER)] [SUBJECT: CONGRATS, BOSS] [CONTENT: “Heard you cleared my debt. Good work. Outer Atolls are calling. Enjoy your corporate empire, Queen. Try not to get sued. Or eaten by Ozan. He still needs that midnight steak, doesn’t he? Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me. If you ever need to disappear a corporate rival, you know who to call. – Z”] Jezra chuckled. Zekal was free. The payment had gone through. Her initial goal, achieved, yet so much more had changed. She glanced at Ozan. He was stirring, his eyes fluttering open. His stare tracked across the tiled room, reading the quiet monitor and the empty doorway. “Jezra?” His voice was a low rasp, but strong. Not the dying whisper from before. He tried to sit up, but his muscles protested. She rushed to his side, easing him back gently. “Stay down, Ozan. The infusion took. You’re stabilized.” He stared at her hands, his voice thin but steady. “The prompt... did you take the whole ledger?” She leaned in, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Every last share. Every last asset. Even you. You’re technically my dependent now. A very expensive, very demanding dependent.” A flicker of surprise, then a slow understanding dawned on his face. The reality of his complete surrender, of his life in her hands. The corner of his mouth twitched, a barely perceptible movement that transformed his stern features. It wasn't a smirk, or a sneer, or a cold command. It was a smile. A real one. For the first time, she saw it. He reached out, a strong hand closing over hers, his touch no longer clinical but possessive, warm. He pulled her closer, his thumb brushing her skin. “Does this mean,” he murmured, his voice laced with an unfamiliar lightness, “you’re going to fire me?” Jezra let out a sharp laugh that echoed off the reinforced composite walls. “Only if you don’t make me a midnight steak tonight, Ozan Vex. And make it a good one. I own the company, so I expect the best.” He gripped her fingers, easing her down until her temple rested against his collarbone, accompanied by the gentle purr of the surgical console. Through the panoramic windows, Mekara’s neon arteries pulsed with life, reflecting in their shared gaze, a newly secured empire bathed in artificial light, waiting for its queen and her bulletproof biomatch.
