Chapter 2: Echoes of a Thorn

Cold wind whipped through the city streets. Youra shivered beside Ren, her small hand clutching his arm. Her face remained pale, eyes wide and distant from the recent terror. He felt her trembling, a delicate vibration against his strong forearm. His own jaw was a rigid line, his gaze sweeping the shadowy alleyways. Every instinct screamed danger. He saw the fear in the villagers' eyes, a reflection of their terror, but also a silent judgment against him. They whispered his name – 'Angel of Death' – as he passed. He ignored them. Youra was safe. That was all that mattered.
Amamiya palace gates loomed ahead, massive iron testament to generations of power. Guards snapped to attention, their faces etched with relief at his return. They had heard the commotion. News traveled fast in Heaven World. Ren led Youra directly inside, through the grand hall, past the stunned servants. He felt their gazes, a mixture of awe and apprehension.
"Are you alright, Youra?" he murmured, his voice a low rumble. He guided her to the plush, crimson sofa in their private chambers. He knelt before her, his blood-red eyes searching hers for any lingering shock. Her delicate fingers trembled as she touched his cheek.
"I am now," she whispered, a fragile smile gracing her lips. "You saved me, Ren. Again." Her gratitude was a balm, a momentary shield against the rising storm within him. He just nodded, his mind already racing. He had to be sure. He had to know.
Carefully, he poured her a glass of water, his movements deliberate. "Rest," he urged, his voice firm. "I need to... investigate something." He pressed a kiss to her forehead, feeling the warmth of her skin. Her safety was his paramount concern. He would burn Heaven World to ash before anyone harmed her again.
Leaving her in the care of their most trusted maid, Ren retreated to his private study. Darkness pressed in, only partially dispelled by the single oil lamp he lit. Its flickering glow cast dancing shadows across the ancient scrolls and arcane tomes lining the shelves. He walked to his heavy oak desk, his hand reaching for the object he had retrieved from the assassin’s robe. He pulled the thorny rose emblem from his pocket. It was cold, metallic, its edges sharp beneath his thumb.
His jaw tightened with grim determination. He studied the symbol in the dim light. Twisted vines, cruel thorns, a rosebud at the center, dark as dried blood. The emblem stirred dormant memories, a chilling echo from a past he desperately tried to bury. His knuckles whitened as he gripped it. A decade. Ten long years since he last saw this cursed insignia.
He remembered the screams. He remembered the fire. His village, reduced to embers, the air thick with the stench of ash and burnt flesh. He remembered the crimson cultists, their faces masked, their robes adorned with this very emblem. They had called themselves the Crimson Cabal. They had come for the blood, for the power they believed resided within the Amamiya line. They had slaughtered everyone.
Everyone but him. He had been a child, barely nine years old, hidden beneath the floorboards, clutching his mother's lifeless hand. He had watched through a crack, paralyzed by terror, as they carved the same emblem into the dying bodies, a grotesque signature. He had felt the surge of something terrible, something powerful, awakening within him that night. His blood, boiling with rage and sorrow, had answered their call in a way they hadn't intended.
That night, he had become the ‘Angel of Death’. He had used the blood that coursed through his veins, not to create life, but to take it. He had avenged his family, but the power had terrified him. He had spent years trying to understand it, to control it, to ensure it never consumed him as it had consumed the Cabal. He had believed them gone, shattered, their fanaticism extinguished by his vengeful wrath.
But they were back. This wasn't a random attack by common thugs. It was targeted. The emblem proved it. The cult had resurfaced, their tendrils reaching into his new life, threatening the tranquil existence he had carefully built around Youra. A cold dread seeped into his bones, colder than any winter chill. He had guarded Youra with his life, built a fortress around her. Yet, they had found her. They had come close.
His gaze fell to his own hand, the one that could manipulate blood, that could heal or destroy with a thought. The power that saved Youra today was the very same power the Crimson Cabal sought to exploit. He was a mirror to their evil, a dark reflection. This thought sickened him. He had to be careful. His power was a double-edged sword, capable of monstrous acts if unchecked.
He ran a finger along the sharp point of a thorn on the emblem. The sting was a familiar reminder. The Cabal’s return meant one thing: they were stronger. They had regrouped, perhaps found a new leader, or perhaps their old, twisted ideology had found fertile ground again. Heaven World was a vast, fractured place, and the 10 Realms Void was always whispering promises of power to those weak enough to listen.
Ren closed his eyes, picturing Youra’s face. Her gentle spirit, her kind smile. She was everything pure in his shadowed life. He would not allow them to touch her. He would tear apart Heaven World itself if it meant keeping her safe. He would become the monster they claimed him to be, ten times over, if it meant extinguishing their threat permanently.
He needed information. The assassins were dead, but they weren't the source. They were pawns. He needed to find the puppet master. He needed to understand the scope of their resurgence. Was this an isolated cell, or had the entire Crimson Cabal reformed?
Rising from his desk, Ren walked to the window, pushing aside the heavy velvet curtains. The moon hung high, a pale disc in the inky sky. He stared out at the sprawling city, a labyrinth of lights and shadows. Somewhere in that darkness, they plotted. Somewhere, they watched. He felt their presence, a faint vibration in the air, a whisper of old, forgotten malice.
He had spent years suppressing the memories, burying the rage, trying to be a different man for Youra. But this emblem, this cruel rose, ripped open old wounds. It dragged him back to the fire, to the blood, to the child he was who had to become a weapon. Now, that weapon was needed again. He would not hesitate. He could not. Not when Youra's life hung in the balance.
His mind raced, piecing together fragments. The assassins' clumsiness, their overconfidence. It indicated they weren't the most skilled, perhaps new recruits, or a diversion. But the emblem was unmistakable. The same twisted rose, the same cult. He had wiped them out once. He would do it again.
He wondered if they knew he was alive. Did they know the child they had left for dead had become the 'Angel of Death'? Or did they simply sense the power in Youra, a power perhaps linked to his own, a weakness they could exploit? The idea sent a fresh wave of ice through his veins. He clenched his fists. They would not succeed.
His eyes narrowed, scanning the distant rooftops. He had to gather his resources. Alert his most loyal network. No one else knew about the Cabal. He had kept that part of his past locked away, a dark secret. Now, the lock had shattered. He could no longer afford to be alone in this fight. But who could he trust with such a dangerous truth? Who would not recoil from the monster he truly was, the monster he had to become to fight them?
A faint scratching sound at his window drew Ren's attention; a small, obsidian-feathered raven, not native to these lands, pecks insistently, a tightly rolled parchment tied to its leg.
