Chapter 9 of 10
The Devotion Awakening
881 words
The cell subterranean air howled, not with wind, but with raw, tormented power. Razien’s growl had become a seismic rumble, shaking the very stone around him. Black fissures ripped through the ceiling and walls, disgorging dust and smaller, jagged rocks that pinged off his iron cuffs. The darkness that seeped from him pressed like lead against the lungs, snuffing the flames of the grimy oil lamps. He felt the world bending, twisting under the sheer force of his anguish, each fractured memory of Tazia’s kindness now a splinter embedded in his soul, festering. The guildmaster stood back, a grotesque smile stretching his face, bathed in the apocalyptic glow. “There it is,” the traitor croaked, “the end of San-Varo, all thanks to a simple lie. You deserved it, you blind fool.”
Just then, the outer iron-banded door burst inward with a splintering crash, sending a shower of woodchips across the flags. Tazia stood framed in the opening, a whirlwind of furious pink silk and determined outrage, Ennio a protective bulwark at her side, his hand already on the hilt of his short blade. Behind them, the sounds of shouting bailiffs and collapsing masonry echoed from the guild hall above.
“Razien!” Tazia shrieked, her voice somehow cutting through the magical cacophony. “What in the seven hells are you doing? You’re going to ruin the floorboards we just polished!”
The guildmaster's head snapped towards the entrance, his smug expression twisting into pure venom. He snarled, his eyes locking onto Tazia. “Morvello. You meddling sow!” His hand darted to his belt, pulling a long, slender stiletto that glinted wickedly in the encroaching gloom. With a predatory hiss, he lunged, aiming for Tazia’s exposed throat. The collapsing ceiling above them shuddered, raining larger debris.
Ennio didn’t hesitate. He intercepted the guildmaster's charge with a guttural roar. The stiletto plunged deep, not into Tazia, but into Ennio’s left shoulder, tearing through his tunic and eliciting a choked gasp of pain. Ennio's face twisted into an almost feral fury as he shoved the guildmaster back with his good arm, kicking out with a hobnailed boot. “Not her, you filth!” he grated, clutching his shoulder, blood already soaking the fabric.
Tazia barely registered Ennio’s sacrifice. Her focus was entirely on the roiling vortex of despair around Razien. The air around him was now a crackling sphere of black lightning, small stones orbiting him like malevolent planets. He was oblivious, lost in the storm within himself. He was going to explode. The city was going to explode.
“You absolute menace!” she bellowed, her voice quivering with a peculiar mix of exasperation and profound fear. “We had a spa day scheduled! A full body exfoliation! How could you forget?!”
Ignoring the groaning foundations and Ennio wrestling the guildmaster, Tazia launched herself forward, a blur of pink silk and stubborn velocity. She dodged a falling chunk of masonry, sidestepped a crackling tendril of dark energy, and with a surprisingly robust tackle, slammed into Razien’s chest. He stumbled, the force of her impact momentarily disrupting the magical tempest around him. His chin dropped, his sightless gaze blank with shock and confusion.
Before he could fully react, Tazia had already produced a small, silver-foil packet from the deep pocket of her dress. “Hold still, you brute!” she commanded, ripping open the packet with a decisive tear. She peeled back a cool, damp sheet, its surface shimmering with a suspiciously luxurious serum. “This is the premium hydrating mask! It costs more than your entire guild hall!”
With surprising speed, she slapped the cool, serum-soaked sheet squarely onto Razien’s face, covering his mouth, nose, and brow, leaving only his cheekbones and chin exposed. The sheet instantly plastered itself to his skin, cool and slick. The gesture was so preposterous, so utterly out of place amidst the collapsing masonry, that it shocked Razien more profoundly than any torment his captor had ever devised.
He sputtered, a sound muffled by the sheet mask, dark energy sputtering around him. His hands, still chained, involuntarily twitched to pull the offending, cooling membrane from his face, but Tazia’s arms were already wrapped around his waist, pulling him into a fierce, almost suffocating hug.
“I love you, you idiot!” she sobbed into his shoulder, her tears wetting the thin linen of his tunic. “I love you more than all the gold in San-Varo, more than all the silk and all the spiced wine! I would burn this entire city to ash before I let anyone hurt you, or make you sad! You are the best, most handsome, most perfectly terrifying man I have ever met, and if you ruin this spa day, I swear, I will never forgive you!”
Her words, the unexpected pressure of her embrace, the ludicrous cool of the sheet mask on his face – it all collided with the raging despair inside him. The accusations, the perceived betrayal, the hatred he’d allowed to bloom, suddenly withered under this onslaught of pure, unadulterated, illogical devotion. The black, jagged lightning coiling around him flickered, wavered, and then, with a deafening crack that echoed through the groaning vault, snapped. The darkness didn’t just recede; it shattered, transforming. The air shimmered, the gloom evaporating, replaced by a blinding, impossibly bright golden light that erupted from Razien, filling the cellar with radiant force.
